And while the governor scales new heights, Liz Benjamin today throws a spotlight on Spitzer friend Dan Weise, playing up the latter's denial of a role in efforts to smack Bruno with a story about abusing state resources. Worth a look.
She quotes unnamed Senate sources (Dicker does too but adds state police sources to the mix) expressing the belief that Wiese has acted as the power behind acting state police superintendent Preston Felton. OK, we've also heard speculation that Wiese maybe was preferred by Spitzer for the permanent job there, but it's been only that.
You may ask: If state Senate employees are leaking speculative stuff about executive branch intrigue, inspiring a reporter or two to write about it, how is that different from the governor's office leaking speculative stuff about Bruno and the choppers, and getting a reporter to write about that?
The answer might actually be that the Senate folks...
...didn't (couldn't) use police officials to build a politically useful record of the other guy's activities -- and then claim deniability and have the misfortune of an attorney general of their own party blowing that out of the water. And, the legislature does serve as "the political branch of government."
Thoughts, legitimate arguments, constructive points, factual contributions all welcome....
