Nassau clerk O'Connell has a hefty surplus from Senate run

After losing a fierce battle to Craig Johnson for Mike Balboni's former Senate seat last February, funded largely through the Senate GOP campaign committee, Republican Maureen O'Connell ended up with $359,582.88 left. It was transferred to the campaign account for O'Connell's post as Nassau clerk. Asked Friday about the prospect of another Senate run next year, she said, "I'm thrilled with my job as county clerk."

Nice start for her County Exec run.

A great candidate and leader that we miss seeing on the state level! She'll have many options to consider...county, state and federal. My advice though, RUN, Maureen, RUN!

Doesn't this kind of stink? She is part of the most expensive state senate race in history, where the Senate Republicans dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into her account, and she somehow doesn't spend $360K that she transfers to her clerk's account. In the old days, the Republicans had the executive mansion and could find a cushy six-figure job to entice a candidate to risk their political capital and enter a possibly losing race. Now all they have is money. This is a payoff plain and simple.
