No more speeches, no more votes, no more opposition’s dirty looks. During the August recess, three members of Long Island’s Congressional delegation are taking information-gathering trips abroad.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) will be part of a group of House members heading to the Ukraine, Europe and possibly Iceland to look at energy issues. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Jamaica Estates), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on the Middle East, goes to that region at the end of the month. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) will also travel abroad, for meetings with the military, his office said.
In the U.S., Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) planned to attend an emergency preparedness workshop for hurricane readiness and talk with the Long Island Farm Bureau. His office said he has a few days of personal time planned, sandwiched into a schedule of meetings and grant workshops. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) has her share of constituent meetings planned, according to her office, but also plans to spend time with her grandchildren. All five local members planned the usual meetings with organizations in their districts to update constituents.
