Governor's Gaffes and Grinds, Today

The Daily News uses the money quote that will be used as a benchmark as this unfolds. It refers to Spitzer being willing to testify before the ethics commission (that includes a very big contributor to his campaign): "I'm happy to, I'm going to, look forward to it," Spitzer said during a visit to Syracuse. "If they call me, I'd love to. If they don't, I'd love to send them my statements because this is going to be clarified." In recent days, we hear, Spitzer privately and unsurprisingly urged top aides to un-stick the situation quickly.

Madore and Mansfield of our shop underscore this less-giddy quote: "Nobody has pointed to a single thing, nor will they be able to - that I personally misstepped," Spitzer said in Syracuse. "But I'm taking responsibility. It's my job as governor. Let's deal with it and then we will move on."

The Times Union resumes reporting on the use of state aircraft -- and finds that Spitzer has been continuing to use it while Bruno has backed off from doing so.

Speaking of which, the Columbia Journalism Review has a different take on the paper and Spitzergate than the one you've been hearing. In it editor Rex Smith concedes a couple of things he'd like to have done differently.

In the Post, these two paragraphs are key in today's story:

"Bruno aide John McArdle said that if the commission does an investigation, "there should be public hearings, full transparency, and testimony by the governor and his aides out in the open and under oath."

"Spitzer, meanwhile, insisted in an interview with the Syracuse Post-Standard that he would have said, 'Stop immediately. What's going on? You can't do this,' if he had known of the actions by his aides."
