Greenport Insurance Fray: A Wider Issue

With concerns rising about health costs for government at all levels, the case of former Mayor David Kapell crystallizes the current dilemma. He says he's preparing to sue the village he served as a municipal official for many years because his health insurance coverage was shaved from 100 percent to 35 percent, as Mitch Freedman reports today.

Whatever its merits, the move by Greenport is just a sample of the kind of backlash that ensues when you take away a benefit that once was assured. These days health insurance is right up there with pensions as the embattled entitlement. Any comments -- specific or general -- on how governments should proceed?
