Counting the Hours

Hours spent on the ground won’t stop in-flight airline workers’ benefits from increasing, if Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) gets his way.

Bishop will introduce legislation Thursday to close a loophole in the Family and Medical Leave Act and allow airline pilots and attendants to count non-flying hours toward FMLA benefits.

The 1993 act requires many employers to provide job-protected unpaid leave to employees who work 60 percent of a full schedule in one year. But, the act doesn’t allow in-flight crew to count hours spent on mandatory stand-by time or time between flights toward those benefits, Bishop said.
