Rep. Peter King has just one gripe about being named for a "Muzzle Award" by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. He says he hasn’t actually received a trophy, medal or certificate he can proudly display.
King (R-Seaford) has no regrets about his call last summer for the New York Times to be criminally investigated for reporting the existence of a federal program monitoring international banking.
The Jefferson Center said the Times story "reflect[ed] the commitment to ‘freedom of the press’ which the Framers of our Constitution meant to safeguard through the First Amendment."
King said, "What they did was act totally irresponsibly, and undermine their country in a time of war."
"The New York Times is a left-wing rag but I would have thought they would have shown some restraint."
[Full disclosure: In case you missed it earlier, King isn’t the biggest fan of Newsday either.]

King was the only individual on the list of 14 finalists for the award. Other nominees included the Bush Administration, for its reported interference in government scientists’ work, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association for the way it enforced its ban on the use of Native American mascots.
"If they give me a medal, I’ll wear it," said King, who also said that he’d saved space on his wall for a hanging trophy.
"They’re using my good name to boost their popularity, and they’re too cheap to even give me an award," he complained.
"I’m really waiting for this."
Now for the reality check:
Times executive editor Bill Keller wrote in a letter to readers that the decision to publish the story "followed weeks of discussion between Administration officials and The Times", after which the newspaper staff concluded that revealing the program would not endanger its existence.
Keller argued that banks would continue to co-operate if the program was legal and effective, and that the U.S. Treasury Department had already been vocal about its efforts to track terror financing.
Keller also pointed out that the story ran in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. King mentioned the Journal and LA Times in the letter in which he called on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to begin a criminal investigation, but focused mainly on the New York Times.

Like we said before...he practices the politics of hate and fear.
King is truly laughable.
"The New York Times is a left-wing rag but I would have thought they would have shown some restraint."
Don Imus, on the other hand?
"To be honest, it is a media opportunity to go over the head of Newsday and the New York Times and to speak directly to people," said King.
King hates NYT because they deal in facts. He loves Imus because he deals in slander.
Actually its more like practicing the politics of keeping us safe (See King's recent legislation to stop lawsuits against citizens reporting suspicious activity that Newsday barely reported on). And what's laughable Nasty Letters is your blind hatred towards King. He obviously made that comment to poke fun at Newsday, not to endorse Imus.
Makes us out to look like a bunch of idiots to the nation. Why do we keep him to represent us again?
1)Is King's support of the Iraq mess keeping us safe? The way I see it, extremists are pouring in and killing our boys, because Bush had no vision, and destabilized a volatile region. If King is keeping us safe, why isn't he speaking up about Al Quada? Where's Bin Laden, Truth? King took his eye off the ball in supporting the Iraq mess we're in now.
I don't hate King. His policies are wrong and harmful. His endorsement of racial profiling is not what America stands for and will only harm our standing in the world. His opposition to the lawsuit is part of a larger strain of bigotry. He also supports an English-only amendment (not reported at all).
Also, Truth, if King was not endorsing Imus, then why wouldn't he refuse to go on his show? See the Newsday article for his lackluster response.
Please Mejias, go away. I'm a Democrat and I want you to go away. Your negative, gutter campaign against Peter king embarrassed me. King is not perfect, but you are egotistical and untrustworthy. If you don't believe me, ask your colleagues (from the Democratic causus) in the Legislature. Someday, I hope you will become acquainted with something called the truth. I will take an honest conservative every time (no matter how much I disagree with them), rather than a self-focused, truth-twister like you. Go Away! Let a REAL Democrat run next time.
