Parsing the Privileges

Newsday today follows up on health benefits for politically-connected part-time public board members, and on take-home cars for select officials -- namely Nassau OTB employees.

These giveaways, while far from unique to Long Island, have a special resonance when the costs of health care and auto use are on the rise for the people in general.

More feedback welcome.

Highly qualified people willing to participate as board members are paramount to the success of an entity. For their compensation you need to ask “What benefit do these people bring?” It’s easy to quantify how much they get. The big question is “How much do they give?”

For these people, in these positions, with their qualifications and with their track records, I would suggest that you could find equally qualified people who are willing to advise these organizations for zero compensation.

When are we going to get serious about tightening our belts?

In many of the positions, you will find its not the "highly qualified" but the "highly connected." Why are so many boards the dumping ground for the politically connected and not the best qualified?
The culture of corruption where family members and friends of the "powerful" have such sweet-heart deals.
Looking at the zoning boards meeting twice a month for maybe 3-4 hours per meeting, then doing visual inspections for maybe 5 hours a week and calculating the salary, we the taxpayers are paying them $50 an hour. Plus benefits.
Pretty good deal for a part-time "job."

just more pigs at the trough. The symbol for Nassau Democrats should be changed from a donkey to a pig, its more fitting.

OTB should post on its website:
1. true and accurate copies of all sets of its books, budget, expense accounts, consultant(s) contracts, etc.
2. true and accurate copies of all minutes of the meetings of the OTB Board of Directors.

show the public the money, its ebb and flow and accounting.

An educated citizenry is the basis of a functioning democracy.

Rach year, according to the County Comptroller, the amount of money going back to Nassau County from OTB decreases.

Taxpayers are interested in money not cars.
