Shelter Island: GOP Boss' 100G Pen$ion Bill

A special bill is circulating in Albany to help Shelter Island Republican chairman Leonard Wayne Bourne, who works in the county social services department, move into a more lucrative level of the pension system at a cost of nearly $100,000.

The measure, sponsored by State Sen. Kenneth LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) and Assemb. Marc Alessi (D-Manor Park) would allow Bourne to move retoractively into the older, and better-compensating, Tier II of the state pension system from Tier III. The move will cost the county $1,700 more per year, and impose a one-time cost on the state of $92,800.

Bourne first worked for the county in 1976 as a CETA worker, then joined the labor and social services departments where he worked until 1981.

He left the county for three years before returning to the social services department in 1984. While he was earlier allowed to join the pension system dating back to 1976, he did not get the Tier II status.

A home-rule message sponsored by Legis. Edward Romaine (R-Center Moriches) was approved in the county legislature Tuesday.

Is this normal or is this special treatment for a political boss?

This happens all the time for county employees, this is typical of newsday to try to make political hay out of it. Notice that Marc Alessi sponsored the bill?? Hello, he's a dem!

Alessi has taken the "politics as usual" mantra hook line and sinker.

and what does the Democratic Party get in return for introducing this blatant political bill

I see another political kiss ass move by Romaine always for good government. Please get rid of this phoney.

You guys are all wrong. Shelter Island is in Alesi's AD, LaValle's SD, and Romaine's LD. The guy works for a county department. You think he's the first one to get put into the proper retirement tier? Nope, he's done. It has nothing to do with politics. Once in a while, things can actually happen for non political reasons.
