Former Riverhead Supervisor James Stark, looking to make a comeback, has announced he will be seeking the GOP nomination to take on Democratic incumbent Philip Cardinale.
Stark, who served a single two year term as supervisor and eight years on the town board, made his announcement Friday. Stark said he wanted to get the town "moving in the right direction," accusing Cardinale of "financial mismanagement" that is "placing a heavy burden on the shoulder of our taxpayers."
Stark first won election in 1995 after challenging fellow GOP town board member Frank Creighton in a party primary and then prevailed in a three-way supervisor race. In 1997 he lost re-election when shoe store owner Vincent Villella, a Republican, ran on a fusion ticket on the Demcoratic line, saying Stark failed to follow through on downtown revitalization projects.
