Anthony Carbonetti, senior adviser to Rudolph Giuliani, the presidential candidate, is quoted today as terming the firefighters who detest the former mayor as “a select group of union officials."
"And the union and firefighters," Carbonetti said, "are two different groups of people.”
For the record, here’s what Giuliani said on March 29, 1996, when he chose as his fire commissioner Thomas Von Essen -- then the city firefighters' union president:
“Tom can bring an awful lot to this because he understands the needs of firefighters in a very, very deep way."
