Rudolph Giuliani this morning announced the endorsement of Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), who sought to reassure conservatives that Giuliani isn’t running “to advance any liberal social agenda.”
Vitter, who will serve as Giuliani's southern regional chairman, might seem an unlikely fit because he is staunchly conservative and opposes abortion, gay marriage and gun control.
Vitter admitted that “obviously I disagree with Rudy on some significant social issues.” But he said he was standing by Giuliani because “Rudy has the strong unwavering leadership and sound judgment that we so clearly need in this time of war and terrorist threat.”
While hardly a household name, Vitter is something of a two-fer for Giuliani – Vitter is a Southerner, to give Giuliani some conservative cred in a part of the country where the ex-mayor’s brand of moderate Republicanism could struggle.
And Vitter is a member of that august club of 100 – take that, Sen. John McCain, who has been using his Washington connections to line up Hill support.
Vitter said the pro-choice, pro-gay-rights Giuliani wouldn’t be a tough sell in his home state, particularly after Hurricane Katrina, and said he reached out to Giuliani after Katrina struck for advice. For his part, Giuliani said the Katrina response suffered from the lack of a unified command center for state and local officials.
At the news conference, Giuliani said he wouldn’t get too worked up if the Republican party platform contained an anti-abortion plank, despite his personal views, because “usually there are a few areas of disagreement” between the platform and the candidate.
Giuliani also was cool to the idea of a presidential pardon for convicted perjurer I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby at this time, calling the talk "premature" even as it is quickly becoming a cause celebre for conservative activists.
