Talk is escalating about Law and Order's Fred Thompson, a former U.S. senator, jumping into the presidential race as a bona fide conservative.
One twist here is that in the old Law and Order reruns, the DA's chief assistant, played by Michael Moriarty, seemed to be an idealized version of Rudolph Giuliani when he was U.S. attorney.
Giuliani, of course, would be vying with Thompson and others for the Republican nomination, and is of course expected to dominate the primary in New York, which is real-live Law and Order territory. Some viewers have long wondered at the plausibility of the Thompson DA character, obviously from Tennessee, being elected as the district attorney in Manhattan.
If Thompson runs, it will be just one more challenge to voters to separate fact from simulation. Of course, wasn't Sam Waterston the voice of Lincoln in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary? As Thompson's chief assistant on the show, maybe that gives him the creds to run.

Sam Waterston also provided the voice of Thomas Jefferson on a PBS documentary about that president.
