Top Judges to Judge our Judges

Big news is breaking in the battle over how judges are selected throughout the state.

The U.S. Supreme Court today granted a writ of certiorari to hear the explosive legal dispute between Margarita Lopez Torrez and the New York City Board of Elections.

In the case last year, U.S. District Judge John Gleeson overturned what is widely considered to be the state’s outdated and party-rigged judicial convention system for selecting state Supreme Court judges.

The decision survived an initial federal appeal, leaving state lawmakers to come up with a new selection system -- or let there be open primaries for the elections in June, which could leave jurists facing a sudden scramble to raise campaign funds.

The top court is expected to take up the case in the fall.
