I grew up on the North Shore. I am a Democrat. In fact, my first foray was helping the late Marty Mellman with the Steve Rattner to elect Irwin Landes to the State Assembly in 1970.
I don't know whose idea it was to run an anti-choice GOP gay bashing woman for the Senate Seat when the best GOP candidate would have been a Jewish woman from Mnahasset or Port.
What I do know is that come tomorrow both Silver and Bruno will be in a world of hurt. If they go ahead with the Comptroller vote after this victory by Spitzer, they are NUTS.
I congratulate Johnson on his win. It was a tough race.
But for ANYONE to mischaracterize Maureen O'Connell as an "anti-choice gay bashing woman" is beyond the pale and is simply not true. Maureen is compassionate, intelligent, thoughtful, honest and hard-working. Johnson would do well to emulate Maureen's qualities. I am sorry that we will not have Maureen's voice back in Albany.
So who is hurt more by this Joe Bruno or Dean Skelos? Watch the buck passing start coming down the pike from both Repub Senate big wigs.
Too bad that these two candidates couldn't have given some of the millions they spent(on media bombardment of the voters) to our public schools. It would have lowered our school taxes. Shame on them!
This defeat gives Joe Mondello zero credibility as state chair with a loss in his own backyard. The Nassau Republicans have to get their act together and start paying more attention to the changing demographics in Nassau--in particularly minorities such as Hispanic voters and Jewish voters. Concentrating on their own strongholds is not enough anymore. You have great Hispanic leaders like Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla who need to be promoted. You also need new vibrant leadership at the top. Joe, it's not workin' anymore!
Mondello does have zero credibility, and the demographics of Long Island are changing, towards a more progressive future.
O'Connell's campaign was such a train wreck though, that she lost plenty of R's: Johnson outperformed the district registration.
You want to win Hispanics? You probably shouldn't insult patriotic Americans by ordering illegal blanket ID checks.
You want to win the Jewish vote? Pandering to them with Rovian "Osama the Boogey Man" lit is an insult to their intelligence.
Maureen's sleaze machine failed miserably, they got what they deserved.
Mondello's political fortunes fell once D'Amato lost in 1998. Since then every election has been a nightmare for him. He alwys blames others for losses and will again this time too.
I hope that Maureen O'Connell's camp can go around and get rid of all the signs that are littering the trains stations in Floral Park and Bellerose.
Ms. O'Connell pushing herself as an independent was a huge turnoff once i checked her voting record. Never votes against her party, never. Independent? C'mon.
She and Johnson should have pointed out that the grade crossings at NHP road and other spots do need to go.
Anyone who has driven north/south on that road knows how bad the traffic gets when the gates stay down 10+ minutes.

The Republican Bully Pulpit just became a hole in the ground.
All eyes should now focus on the Town of Hempstead Republican Crew. Time to start busting up that patronage mill.
Floral Park's mayor now must be taken to task for using village assets to promote O'Connell.
Stay alert.. the Republicans now will try to dig in even harder in Villages and Special Districts, the only areas they can employ their soldiers.
