Behind Democrat Craig Johnson's win on Tuesday was a coalition of grass-roots groups that has not drawn much mention, a trusted informant says.
Callers, organizers and canvassers came from the groups ACT NOW, Citizen Action of New York, People for the American Way, Tenants PAC, Democracy for LI, Democracy for NYC, and Take NY with publicity by Daily Gotham and the Albany Project.

This is just another example of the failure of leadership within the Nassau, and now the New York State, GOP. The party's leaders have once again failed to recognize - or perhaps have negligently underestimated - the dramatic changes that have occurred in local politics during the past 10 years. The Republican party here - if it is to survive - must lose the 1950s mentality under which, incredibly, it continues to operate. The party needs young, dynamic and RESPONSIVE leaders who welcome open discourse, and even dissent, within its ranks, or else it will have to resign itself to permanent minority status. I, for one, would not welcome such a prospect as a strong two-party system is essential for good government.
