An Eternal Question Answered

Q: If you held a press conference and only one reporter showed up, would you still stand behind a decorated podium?

A: No. You'd go inside where it's not cold and talk in the press room.

Craig Johnson and Gary DelaRaba had the misfortune this morning of holding a presser at virtually the same time as one at Nassau police headquarters about yesterday's Syosset homicides. Thus, we were the only reporter present. See the details after the jump.

Reid J. Epstein

Johnson (D-Port Washington), who sits on the Nassau legislature's public safety committee, took the official endorsement from DelaRaba and the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association.

"It really wasn't a tough decision for us," DelaRaba said. "We know whatever we're getting from him is going to be square business."

The endorsement follows a detente between Delaraba and Tom Suozzi, who has been campaigning and raising money for Johnson. But the PBA boss said we shouldn't hold our breath waiting to see him and the county executive holding hands and singing Kum-ba-ya.

"We happen to agree on this one issue," Delaraba said.

So Craig Johnson won't talk about taxes. We all know he'll vote to raise taxes.

Instead, he has to smear Maureen O'Connell's record. She is not opposede to stem cell research.

As a nurse, she pioneered stem cell research for cancer patients.

Maureen O'Connell harvested stem cells to treat cancer patients.

Craig, if you can't speak the truth, then it's time to keep quiet.

Let's see ... why would Delaraba support Johnson?
mmmmmmm...Altmann supports Delaraba...Altmann supports Johnson...Johnson supports Altmann for County Executive...Altmann supports big raises for the police...mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Yes, if only one reporter shows up to a press "conference," it should go from a formal speech to a one-on-one conversation after the obligatory photo. Bad PR here -- perhaps they should have held it in a place where some of the small weekly papers could also attend.

Just goes to show you what a stiff Johnson is.

Wow, talk of the Democrats smearing Maureen is enough to make you sick. If Maureen hadn't of pulled the first punches and continuously mislead voters about her previous votes against a woman's right to choice, stem cell research and lowering property taxes while in the Assembly, Craig would'nt have to be clearing the record. Further if Republicans hadn't forced Nassau County to the brink of bankruptcy and state finanical control, Craig and the legislature wouldn't have had to make the difficult decision of raising the small amount of county taxes over 4 years ago that for the record, have brought Nassau back. Maureen and her campaign should be ashamed of their manipulations.

Talk about distortion. Maureen voted against the stem cell research bill because it created a bureaucracy (a favorite Democratic entity)to do the work.

Maureen favors a more direct approach with greater accountability.

Leave it to the Dems to distort the truth.

Why did the Nassau cops split from the Detectives and the Supervisors who have endorsed his opponent?

bob dillon had a song about all this...you have to be able to see the future and ny is going deep blue...craig johnson has been a fiscal conservative when it matter...when you are in the minority in albany as a assembly person you can vote the popular why and take the easy way out....what will the senate look like in two years...could very well be in the hands of the D's ...and if the senate goes that way it will probably be decades before it swings back...the question is ..do you endorse for the present or for the long haul...time will tell

The stem cell kerfluffle is because the Conservative Partywould not give its nomination to anyone who voted for the bill.
