DiNapoli Wants to Stay in the Assembly

With his strong ties to Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer, there has been some speculation that state Assemb. Thomas DiNapoli, that house's environment guru, might want to become Spitzer's commissioner of the department of environmental conservation.

But DiNapoli, just back from a trip to Israel, made it clear that he is most interested in becoming the Assembly's majority leader, not DEC head.

"My preference is to stay in leadership and move up the ladder," he said.

That "trip to Isreal" he took was with Shelly Silver and a dozen other Assembly Democrats. Did Tom get good news in The Holy Land from the Speaker?

As the Handlesman cartoon aptly pictured him several years ago, how refreshing that a politician plainly and directly speaks of his future ambitions. Spitzer and Silver would be wise to move him up as a more prominent member of the team.
Good Luck Tom!

DiNapoli had nowhere else to go, so he's saving face. If Majority Leader under Silver were that big of a deal, Bragman wouldn't have tried a coup, and Tokasz wouldn't have quit! By the way, did the public pay for the annual Israel trip, too?

...trip paid for by the Jewish Community Relations Council.
