Naked Ambition

Which was the most fevered lunge for self-promotion by a power player?
1. Defeated Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry telling students that if “you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
2. President George W. Bush telling radio host Rush Limbaugh: "Anybody who is in a position to serve this country ought to understand the consequences of words...”
3. Nassau County Assessor Harvey Levinson calling a press conference to highlight the millions of dollars in property tax breaks that clergy have long enjoyed — and urging a review of the exemptions.

This time I'd vote for the WFP for sending out mailings claiming that a vote on their line would be a vote for peace and "bringing the troops home" after endorsing Spitzer and Clinton who both support the war. (And not say Tasisni who was anit- war.) And for using a picture of and quote from Cindy Sheehan on their mailing when she actually endorsed the Green Party candidates for Governor and US Senate, not the Democrats that the WFP endorsed.

Levinson's press conference on the impact of these exemptions isn't so much self promotion as it is a long overdue push for scrutiny of some of the insanity that is so pervasive in our current property tax laws. He has raised just the tiniest tip of the iceberg, but at least it's a start. Newsday should be pushing much further on this front, along the lines of what was done with the fire districts. There is very questionable legislative activity going on in the property tax realm in NY that needs to be exposed to the light of day, and much of it is coming from Newsday territory.
