Mondello: Eyes on the Prize

Nassau Republicans have their eyes on tonight's tallies, thinking that a strong showing for their judicial nominees and Republican comptroller candidate Chris Callaghan in Nassau would boost local GOP Chairman Joe Mondello's chances of becoming the state party leader when Steve Minarik, whom Pataki installed as New York chairman, goes on his merry way.

If he had been a Democratic mole sent to destroy the Nassau Republican party, Joe Mondello could not have done more damage to the County party, County Republican candidates or County Republican Committeemembers during his almost 25 years as County party Chairman. Just think back to where the Nassau Republican Party was in 1982 and where it is today. He is a disgrace.

Who exactly is the leader of the GOP in New York? No one would acknowledge Joe Mondello as the leader of the GOP, despite his installation as State Chairman. Joe Mondello simply picks up another paycheck. Can you count how many that makes? Joe gets more checks each month than a Locust Valley dowager cashing in dividend checks. Joe was always about Joe, not the party.
Is it that other Joe, Joe Bruno? I don't think so. Joe has never been regarded as the sharpest tool in the shed. Yes, he is dapper and a swell dresser, and his hair is always so perfect, but bright? No one has ever accused him of that.
George Pataki? George is as far removed from the state GOP as he is from governing the state of NY. George is all about George and could care less about the party.
Mike Bloomberg? I don't think so. Mike is smart enough to keep his distance from the train wreck that is the NY State GOP.
So who is running the party? Would you want to take responsibility for the worst run political organization in any major state in the US? Even Joe Bruno, who knows very little, knows enough to stay behind his puppet on this one.
So, let's recap. Bruno has his stooge in Mondello, Mondello gets another pay check and another title, Bloomberg gets to watch this show from his private jet, and Hillary, well, she just appreciates that there is no GOP in NY.
Thanks, George Pataki.
