Knives Out For Hevesi

Outgoing Gov. George Pataki is expected today to sign an executive order that would allow a special counsel to subpoena witnesses as part of an investigation of state Comptroller Alan Hevesi.

This comes after Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer signaled through a targeted leak last week that he is leaning toward asking the state Senate to remove Hevesi once he takes office.

The voters spoke. The issue is no more.

Alas, the issue will remain painfully present until Mr. Hevesi leaves office.

Every one of his audits, no matter how well done, will be scoffed at by local officials, and nothing he says or does will ever change that fact.

May he please come back to his senses soon, and free himself to enjoy more quality time with his wife.

Repeat after me: State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.
