The debate this morning between the two major party candidates for lieutenant governor highlights how difficult it may be for gubernatorial frontrunner Eliot Spitzer to get a death penalty bill through the state Legislature.
Spitzer’s running mate, Senate Minority Leader David Paterson (D-Harlem) reiterated his opposition to capital punishment during his clash with Republican John Faso’s running mate, Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef.
“It’s a matter of conscience for me,” Paterson said. “I don’t support it.”
UPDATE: An earlier post that Paterson was opposed to gay marriage was incorrect. Paterson is on the record as supporting gay marriage.
