More than 200 people cheered on Nassau Legis. David Mejias (D-North Massapequa) as he kicked off his congressional campaign in his hometown headquarters against seven-term incumbent Peter King (R-Seaford).
“I believe in the American dream,” Mejias told his supporters Saturday. “I have lived it, and I want to reclaim it for all Americans. [President] George Bush and Peter King are taking this country in the wrong direction . . .”
Mejias, the son of immigrant parents from Cuba and Ecuador, quoted King as saying he “thanks God every night that George Bush is president,” and added that King has forgotten where he came from.
But King, reached in Washington, said Mejias is misstating the facts. “When I talked about thanking God for the president, I was quoting former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, a Democrat,” he said.
King also called Mejias “ridiculous” for thinking he feared him. “The people in the 3rd district support my position against illegal immigration and against amnesty. Mejias is out of touch with the people.”

Mejias is a hard worker and has a great future, but he's picking the wrong fight here. Peter King will be overwhelmingly reelected. No one relects the 3rd CD better than he. I disagree with Congressman King on many, many things, but he stands up for us and he shows great respect to us even when we differ on policy and politics. Dave, I wish you continued success, but at another time and in another place.
Sorry. Hit post too soon. It should read "no one represents the 3rd CD..."
200 people!! That's 10 times the amount of a Suozzi event. Maybe Mejias should run for governor.
Peter King is lying - he said it in a constituent letter:

hey anon, there is nothing more frightening as ignorance in action. U couldnt shine suozzis shoes, ur a loser!
that you mule? your new job seems to be defending suozzi on the blogs, huh?
my, how the mighty have fallen.
I was in attendance and it was more like 50 people.
i never thought id see another moran on the blog, but i was mistaken by suozzifanisthemule.
King has only been "overwhelmingly reelected" in the past because he's never had a real challenger. Mejias is his first opponent with a proven record to run on.
Plus, it was closer to 300 at the rally.
mejias has a real chance---if the republican base doesn't turn out and given what is happening that is very possible, and with clinton and spitzer at the top of the ticket---king could be in real trouble--timing is everything in politics and mejias may be just lucky enough to be the right man at the right time-
Yeah 300, if you include everyone who walked by the event and all the Democratic Legislator staffers who were forced to go.
No one reprresnets the 3rd district better than King? Huh What???
King is a strong backer of not only the Iraq War, but the way Bush has handled the Iraq War. The district thinks differently. Strike 1
King is a strong backer of Bush. While the district voted for Bush in 04, that was due to the 9/11 bump. A bump no longer in existence, the district voted for Gore by 13 in 2000 (9 under the current lines) and strongly disapproves of Bush. Strike 2
King is 100% Pro-Life. The district is no quesion Pro-Choice. Strike 3.
King is for putting into the Constitution Gay Marriage. The district might be split on gay Marriage, but does not think it should be banned in the Constiution. Strike Four
The immigrant plan. King favors making those who help ilegals Felons, as well as not doing anything about those already here. the district realizes you have to adress both border security and what to do about those already here. And while a path to Citizenship might not be the fairest way, its the most realistic approach, because real border security deals with both spects. Strike Five
King constantly votes for tax breaks to muti millionaires. The district favors tax cuts, but cuts that help them, not cuts that help their bosses boss, bosses boss. Strike 6
King has a long track record of being very friendly with the gas & Oil Companies & voted against investigations of Price Goucing. The people of his district are sick & tires of gas companies putting up record profits on the backs of ordinary Americans just because they can get away with it. Strike 7
King voted against expandng Embryonic Stem Cell research funding, and against Bush's veto. The people of his district strongly support expanding Embryonic Stem Cell reserach. Stike 8
I can go on & on, King is the one completley out of touch with the people of his district, and he is finally getting someone with a proven record, and while not someone that can challenge him $$ for $$, someone who can be competive raising $$$. mejias raised more $$$ in 5 weeks than King's or opponent Mathies spent during the entire election season. This will be BY FAR the toughest re-election bid King has faced and while he is favored at this point it willbe a competitive race and anything can happen.
That line sould read Mejias has raised more $$$ in 5 weeks than King's 04 oppoent Mathies spemt during the entire campaign.
What proven record are you talking about? With Homeland Security being a main priority of those living on Long Island, Nassau County has the worst rating in emergency management in the State. Where is Mejias? Now its seems as though Nassau County has a projected deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars in the coming years. Again, Where is Mejias? And don't even start on the immigration issue. In Farmingdale, the biggest part of Mejias' district, you can't even walk down Main Street with your family to get an ice cream at night without worrying for your life due to illegal immigrant gangs. And now they are living ten at a time in illegal apartments throughout the town lowering property values. And Mejias is actually backing the illegal immigrants who are ruining the quality of life on Long Island. I actually invite you anyone who reads this to take a walk in Farmingdale Village on a Saturday night and report back what you find. And I'm sure its not Mejias helping out the community.
I thought we got over the whole ridiculous "illegal immigrant gangs" thing after last year's election. Gary DelaRaba spent like $700K trying to make people THINK that was true, and it didn't work.
Ahh these pesky "illegal immigrant gangs". This is the same rehashed bs that worked oh so well for Delarbara and Sabellico last year. It is quite amazing that all these people who talk about immigrants & crime ignore the fact that Nassu County is rated the SAFEST COUNTY IN THE UNITED STATES BY THE FBI, and the county's crime rate continues to decline. But lets not let facts get in the way of bigotry and racism......
