McFarland Tells Minarik She's Staying In

After William Weld yielded to pressure to drop out of the race for governor, many people guessed that Hillary Clinton challenger KT McFarland would be next.

State GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik III urged McFarland to drop out and get behind former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, the party designee, but during a conversation this morning McFarland told Minarik to take a hike.

"She said thank you but I’m gonna run a primary," Minarik said. "I served her up one and she slammed it back at me."

Minarik has sought to unify the party behind a slate of candidates, but it appears the Republican will have at least one primary battle. Spencer won 63.5 percent of the vote at the state GOP convention last week compared to McFarland's 36.5 percent.

UPDATE: McFarland just released a statement saying she's staying in the race. Here's part of it.

"In short, I have earned my spot on the ballot in September and I intend to keep it," she said. "To do anything else would be to renege on my promise to the hundreds of people I have met in the last eleven weeks, who have supported me, often against the pressures of the party bosses."
