Sniffles story ends happily

Sniffles is a mixed-breed dog who went missing the same day Vivi, the Westminster whippet pulled her disappearing act.

His story, at least, has a happy ending. Read on for a Team Vivi update:

"Incredibly, following 2 years of posting, mailing and faxing his flyer, TeamVivi has located Sniffles after endless internet searches of the animal shelters in NYC. We found a perfect match in Charlie at S.A.V.E Animal Rescue (Silent Animal Voices Echo), a week shy of the two year anniversary date. Sniffles was rescued as a stray just 14 miles from the original location he was lost.

Although we do not have Sniffles' blood to test and he was not micro chipped, a photo comparison of Sniffles (a neutered older shepherd greyhound mix) undoubtedly and perfectly matches Charlie (also a neutered older shepherd hound mix). The comparison of coloring and body shape and markings were done in person by our own NYC searcher Debbie. She went to meet Charlie, took some pictures for us and is excited and very happy and pleased to report: SNIFFLES IS FOUND!!!

Sniffles is safe at last and housed by a very caring rescue group called S.A.V.E Animal Rescue (Silent Animal Voices Echo). A kindly person had kept the stray Sniffles in their garage after he had wandered in to seek shelter. Fortunately for Sniffles, S.A.V.E was contacted for rescue and not the city pound.

Sadly, the 2 years on the streets has left Sniffles in physical and emotional distress. Already a timid dog when he was lost, life must have been horrific for him. While he is now mending physically with good food, warmth, love and vet attention, it will take time for him to learn to trust again. He is a very sweet tempered fellow, but extremely nervous and shy. Because of the emotional toll that travel would cause Sniffles, S.A.V.E will only allow a local adoption – absolutely no exceptions. Sniffles will be going into foster soon to heal. His health must and will come first.

His rescue is truly breathtaking. And so is he.
With absolute and heartfelt thanks to all involved,
Mila Bennett 2/29/08"

Hooray for Sniff........Now lets hear a horayyyyyyy for our dear Vivi...Don't give up on her people, she was lost around the same dear Sniffles was lost and look at him now! Keep the faith! xoxorooby

Thank you, Mila for the wonderful update on Sniffles. May he know only love and pampering from this day on. I will never give up on Vivi. Miracles happen and this should make us even more determined to find her. Count me in.
Any news about Sargeant?

I'm confused? Are Sniffles' owners not able to get him back?

I'm confuse also. I don't remember this story but why can't the owners have him back?

What owner? He belongs to the rescue SAVE.

Need some advice for a chihuahua owner friend in Memphis? What do you do to stop a 10-week old chihuahua from wanting to chew on your hand? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I thought Ashley gave up on ever finding Sniffles and got another dog.

Regarding the chi- she'll probably just outgrow it but always for that kind of thing the best thing to do is substitute something- remove hand, insert rawhide. Or if she brings you a piece of trash or a shoe, remove trash (shoe) give toy in trade. Eventually they learn what gets them the good things and what are the good things, what gets them ignored, etc. Yelling about it doesn't work.

And they lose their baby teeth at 4-5 months and will probably stop hand chewing by then.
--------------------
Ashley now lives 3000 miles away and Sniffles is in no shape to travel. No more trauma for him, just quiet safety.

Thanks Mila

Mila never gave up on Sniffles, never in two years.
Sniffles now needs some TLC and to learn to trust again...Poor boy, I hate to think about what he went through in the time he spent on the streets and alleys of NY...
Perhaps people could learn from this story..You don't adopt a dog, have him a short time, go on vacation and leave his care to someone who doesn't really understand rescues...She/he took him to the park, nice, BUT, Sniffles had his leash removed, freaked and ran off...Nice thought to let the dog run and have a good time, but it most often doesn't work...This was the case with Sniffles.
Anytime I lit a candle for Sniff, Mila had been lighting them right along. God bless her......She's got a place in heaven for sure.... (0:

ROOOBY - I so AMEN what you posted. This sweet boy needs lots of TLC, and "ownership" is earned by responsibility for your pet in my opinion.

MILA - You definitely DO HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN HEAVEN for helping Sniffles (and the S.A.V.E. people and person who found him God bless you all). I KNOW how hard you looked for this sweet boy. Have to admit, many times I thought it was a useless search - but you and God proved me wrong!

KAREN - Thanks for your help about the chi chewing issue. I forwarded your response to the lady at work, Karen. She is a chi lover I just met recently. She had wanted to adopt my sweet little Sophie, but I beat her to it - thank goodness - love that little rascal!

Hey all! I am so very thrilled beyond words we found Sniffles!! Many Blessings to the family who kept Sniffles and called SAVE to come for him. These folks are the true rescuers of our darling Sniffles. The family had no idea what a much loved treasure they were caring for when they came to the aid of a stray shepherd mix dog. And SAVE? This rescue is truly wonderful. They are all for their animals. The mere fact that they took Sniffles with all his health issues says a lot to me. They are small and have no physical shelter and pay for private boarding for their cats and dogs as well as all vet costs. I wish I had a million dollars for them.....guess my few dollars will have to do for now.
Dear Sniffles I love you.

Mila

Good morning Daddy God. How we thank you and praise you for your many blessings. Thank you so much for bringing Sniffles to safety and love and warmth. Bless our beloved Mila for all she did. What a wonderful soldier she is for you. Please bless her Daddy. Thank you for saving Daisy Girl and Joseph, our new addition. How we thank you for all you do. Please bring our beloved Vivi home quickly. How we need her and she needs us. Shine your light on her too, Daddy God. She is close, just like Sniffles. Bring her home safely Daddy. We ask for your healing and protective care over Buddy and Bee. Guide the surgeons hands for Buddy and strengthen him and heal him totally. Give Bee your peace and calm her digestive tract. Your creatures need your peace and healing grace just like we do. How we look to you. Continue to heal Pepper and Digger. Give Pepper a ravenous appetite and heal his beautiful liver with your tender touch. Touch Digger's and Dante's kidneys and restore them to perfect health. Heal Darlene's ankle and make her stronger than ever and bring your perfect healing to Cheryl.Bring justice for the little puppy that was murdered. How heartless mankind can be. We need your strength. We love you Daddy God and we need you so. You are the breath we breathe and you are with us with every step we take. Hold all of close to your heart and flood our lives with your glory. In Jesus's name, we praise you!!

And also Daddy God, how we thank you for bringing healing to Sharon's mom. We are so grateful. We love you Daddy.

Hi Everyone -

Please go to this site and vote NO to horse slaughter in the US. The YES are ahead. We MUST beat them!

http://wjz.com/local/horse.slaughter.congress.2.669612.html

Kathleen should'nt we vote YES that the US should ban horse slaughter for human consumption?

KAY - Thanks, you are so right. Thanks for correcting this tired mind! IS IT FRIDAY YET?????

Just voted yes but the no's are not that far behind.

Margot

Hi Everyone,

This beautiful prayer was e-mailed to me and I thought I'd share:

Prayer for the Protection of Animals

O God, source of life and power, Who feedeth the birds of the heavens, increase our tenderness towards all the creatures of Thy hand. Help us to refrain from petty acts of cruelty, or thoughtless deeds of harm to any living animal. May we care for them at all times, especially during hard weather, and protect them from injury so that they learn to trust us as friends. Let our sympathy grow with knowledge, so that the whole creation may rejoice in Thy presence.

Laura

LAURA - That is truly beautiful. I found myself with tears in my eyes thinking what a perfect world we could have if all animals and humans were treated this way.

KAY AND MARGOT (and anyone else too) - Thank you for voting in this poll to hopefully get the message out to our government that we want slaughter of beautiful horses stopped completely in the US and the transportation also. Bless you all for your love and compassion.

Everyone who loves Dogs MUST Contact and write letters to every govermement official you can think of. in reguards to the many mandatory spay/neuter bills that are cropping up. if you think this spay/neuter bill is a good thing. then you wont mind it when later on these same people pass a bill making it mandatory for your children and your childrens children to be Spayed and Neutered. think about it. its not far in coming.

This bill will bring an end to many of the lesser and some of the better known breeds. it will drasticly limit the genetic pool that already has been depleated.

This type of bill has already been passed in L.A County. it is already Illegal to posses a dog over 4 months of age that is unneutered or spayed.

glad Sniffles was found. good going.

Hi Everyone,

Gayle: Ironically, when I read your post I had just read an article about how India is poisoning dogs because "they have become a nuisance". I was horrified. Now even more we should get the mandatory spay/neuter bill passed.

Laura

If only.....If only people/owners of pets would step up and take some responsibility, we wouldn't have to be dealing with these spay/neuter issues now. Even in the rural areas we deal with this.
An article in our local newspaper today was about taking care of the pet population in our region and how the humane society struggles to take care of abandoned animals and that is why dogs and cats should be spayed or neutered. Of course, they had two of the most adorable puppies displayed with this article. I want to adopt them both.

Wonderful news on Sniffles!!
Good job MILA!!
email me when you see this and if you have time!! :-)

VIVI will be found soon with God's perfect timings!....

Found this on comcast's website, if these are our children's role models . . . . . . . .

Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour apologizes for killing hawk, Humane Society to contact PGA

Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour apologized for killing a hawk that was making noise while he tried to film a TV show. Now the Humane Society wants the PGA Tour to take action.
``Because of the high profile nature of this case, the PGA needs to take steps to address its interest and to make it clear that they don't condone animal cruelty,'' said Dale Bartlett, the deputy manager for animal cruelty issues for the Humane Society of the United States.
Bartlett said the organization would contact the PGA Tour on Friday to discuss the issue.
Isenhour, who plays on the developmental Nationwide Tour, was charged Wednesday with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.
Isenhour quickly apologized Thursday.
``As soon as this happened, I was mortified and extremely upset and continue to be upset,'' Isenhour said in a statement issued through his management company, SFX Golf. ``I want to let everyone know there was neither any malice nor deliberate intent whatsoever to hit or harm the hawk. I was trying to simply scare it into flying away.''
The 39-year-old player, whose real name is John Henry Isenhour III, became angry while filming ``Shoot Like A Pro'' on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club when a squawking red-shouldered hawk roughly 300 yards away forced another take.
He drove closer to the bird in his golf cart and starting hitting balls at it. The bird didn't move and Isenhour gave up and drove away.
Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.
Isenhour allegedly said, ``I'll get him now,'' and aimed for the hawk.
``About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close,'' Baine wrote.
A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.
Bartlett said Isenhour's case, like the Michael Vick dog fighting case, is disappointing for society.
``We look up to professional athletes and we want them to reflect the best of us as a society and I think we're appalled when it turns out they instead reflect some of the very worst attributes,'' he said in a phone interview Thursday night.
Isenhour said he is an animal lover and his family has adopted three cats from a local shelter.
``We ask that everyone accept my sincerest apology, and please be respectful of my family's privacy,'' he said.
Isenhour has won four times on the Nationwide Tour, including twice in 2006. The former Georgia Tech star has played three events this year on the tour the last a 36th-place tie two weeks ago in the Moonah Classic in Australia.
Jethro Senger, a sound engineer at the shoot, said hitting the bird was ``basically like a joke to Isenhour).''
``He just kept saying how he didn't think he could have hit it, which I think is a stupid thing for a PGA Tour golfer to say,'' Senger said. ``He can put a ball in a hole from hundreds of yards away, and here he is hitting line drives at something that's, I don't know, a couple hundred feet away?''
Senger said no one in the roughly 15-person crew intervened, and many later regretted it.
``It was one of those cases where there's some trepidation on whether or not they should speak up and do something,'' Senger said.
Senger said the killing was not captured on video. The bird was buried at the golf course and later dug up by Florida investigators.
``Americans have no tolerance for cruelty to animals. Such a petty, mean-spirited act against a wild bird is inexcusable and prosecutors are right to hold Isenhour accountable to the law,'' Humane Society executive vice president Michael Markarian said in a statement released Thursday.

So the fact that it will compleatly destroy dogs not only the breeds but as a species as well, doenst matter to you. Just that it will some how keep dogs from being poisoned now in india does?? This doesnt make sense me to. How does this affect us here in the U.S.? I forget, please enlighten me. How do we even compare to India? China and various other countries eat dogs. So we should spay and neuter ours so they stop eating dogs?? humm. somehow I dont think our non populating animals make a damned bit of diffence in china or india.
Lets see. per year. If there is a fee for licensing, of 150 per animal . A fee of oh lets just put it at 500 per animal per year for just keeping an intact animal around. humm then lets add in the vet bills which will only keep going up since that will be the only way current vets will beable to keep solvent with the pet decrease. humm 750 a year? That may be a bit high but if you get an average of over 15 years for one pet that should be about right. That alone is 1400 a year per animal. Then you add the show costs which right now are about 25 per class per show. the transportation to each show. The hotel or space rent per show weekend, handler fees which are depending upon the handler. About 75 per class, The normal show dog goes to about 15 shows a year? Some much more some less. The purpose of these shows is to determine the better breeding stock, to introduce people to differnt breeds, to differnt sports. to give children who have nothing better to do than to smoke, deal with drugs and alcohol and commit crimes, Dogs give an alternate life style, a differnt channel for thier engergies. If you have never shown, Perhaps you should try it Laura. can you add all this up? Then times it by about say 9 dogs? Could you with all of your finances keep solvent? Would you beable to recoop what you had paid per year by selling your puppies to good homes for anything less than the price of a small car?? and who would have the money to buy that?? Only the rich. P.S I dont have a car. so according to this above. I would not have dogs. Believe me, I would not be alive now it I didnt have my canine children. And I know many people who feel the same.
I know I would not beable to. How many people would then go underground with thier dogs? How many of these underground dogs would ever again see a vet? You do realize that with these legislations will come mandatory reports from vets with major penelties if they are caught not reporting. Then watch our rabies and other disease incedence rise..
Have you ever seen a bitch die because she did not recieve the appropiate care when welping? Nor the number of puppies that would die along with the bitch because a c-section was not done?
All of this should be thought of before voting for such a horrendous bill. I for one will never approve it nor vote for it. And will do everything in my power to speak out against it. now and forever. If you love dogs and the many things they can bring to the lives of the sick, elderly, and the lonely. You would never vote for such a bill.
Are we going to revert back to the times when only the ruling classes will beable to own dogs? When it is the poor, elderly and middle class that need them even more.

Don't mince words Gayle, keep talking and talking. We could read it but I think its maybe too long. Can u say what you have to say in a shorter blah?

Gayle: In response to your post I was referring to the many stray animals that are out in the world that should be spayed or neutered. I was in no way referring to breeding by a responsible owner. Also, yes I know this is happening in India and maybe you don't care about dogs' and/or animals' lives in another part of the country but if you were the dog loving person you claim to be it would matter, regardless of where it was happening. The fact that it IS happening no matter where is very sad. So in that particular instance, and it's happening here (not the poisoning), too with stray animals in this country, I do believe there should be a mandatory spay/neuter law. So you need not preach to me because I care about ALL animals no matter where they live.

Laura, mandadory spay neuter is not the answer. It is individuals taking responsibility for their animals. It is educating people in the humane treatment of animals. It is all connected. You really can't legislate morality or a humane conscience. It is either instilled in the young or it isn't.

Anyone live in Connecticut? I have heard there is not much of a stray problem there and shelters are not overcrowded. I have read that they actually bring in dogs form other state shelters in order to fill adoption requests there. Is this really true? What do you think makes Connecticut residents different than the rest of the country then if this is true that some shelters there take in animals from other parts of the country to fill adoption requests???

I have to agree with Libby (not to bash Gayle, she has a right to her opinion). I work in a high school, and the total disregard for any life forms is appalling. Kids just don't get it. They just kill (or talk about killing) animals as if they are objects, not living entities. I think there should be a humanities course for children, beginning in the elementary grades, since obviously many parents aren't teaching it at home. Sure, lots of children are born with a love/respect for animals, but many aren't, and need to be taught how to care for them, and more importantly, WHY we need to respect them. Anytime I see a student killing anything (even a bee), or talking about what they want to do to a pigeon, cat, or dog, they get a good lecture on the animal's place in the world, morality, justice, and whatever else I can throw in there for good measure. to sum it up: education and owner responsibility are the keys.

Libby, Laura and I live in Connecticut. We're a small state. I don't know about the number of strays, but the shelters and pounds do get dogs in from the south and areas like New York and PA. I don't know if it's due to the people. More likely the ACO's and rescues have the time and space to take them in and rehab them. I've seen many of these dogs, a lot are hunting dogs that didn't "make the grade" so instead of them being killed the shelters up here take them in. They come up here so sad and scared it tears at my heart. But I don't think people up here are that much different. I've reported some over the years. But CT has one of the highest horse populations, so maybe that transfers into being held accountable for taking care of all animals one has.
Any news on Sargeant?

NMTSAKI - I so agree with you. I would love to see something like mandatory spay/neuter not required, but we must face it - we have to do something to curve the abundance of animals euthanized (and even worse) in our country.

The violence in our schools and on our streets is proof we are "dreaming" if we think this can be eliminated by teaching - folks seeing parents of some of our patients each day I can tell you it just "is not happening." Those days have passed - and I think it is the direct result of all the "latch key" children with no one in the home. We can thank our country for helping to make it impossible for the mother to be home with her children with our high taxes and their wasteful spending!

I keep pictures of my own animals I love in my office (and the rescued animals - Deb your album about the doxies is there for eduction also). When a child is in my office, they ALWAYS ask about these. I express to them how much all of these animals are loved and mean to me, and what our groups have done to rescue the others. Then I always share these are "Creatures of God" which He has allowed us to be a part of their lives - and we should honor and respect that gift from God.

If we want to see a change in this world, we are ALL going to have to work to educate the youth who are not being educated by their parents. I just wonder, does Westminister go out and bring children in from rough areas of New York and try educating them about these beautiful Creations of God. If not, I hope they will soon.

My post was not to cause any arguments. I was stating that spaying and/or neutering for the stray animals was important to do for the safety of them and any babies that occur by not doing this so as they don't have to fend for themselves on the streets. Owners should be more responsible but the fact of the matter is the number of strays that are out there is clear that a lot of them are responsible so something has to be done. I know this is a "touchy" subject to some and sorry for any feelings fueled by my post. It was just my opinion and sorry if it caused any ill feelings.

LAURA - You do not need to apologize. You voiced your views, as did others. Reading these different points of view is educational, and maybe some children or adults will see them too and start to educate their children about this.

I think this blog indicates the statement, "YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY!" We now voice our feelings and opinions without attacking each other, and that is very beneficial and mature. Whether I agree with another's opinion or not, I am still very glad to read it and know people are truly thinking about such an important problem in our country.

BTW - The poisoning of the animals in India has been stopped. They are now considering spay/neuter - thank God.The animal rights outcry helped save these last babies. Praise the Lord for this. May the Lord give Peace and Comfort to the ones who died such a horrid death by poisoning.

You are right Kathleen! We have come a long way.
Laura, touchy subject or not... differing opinions are always good. Every one shows a different slants on this subject. IMHO all the opinions posted are very good and true on all counts. Somewhere in the middle would be a good place to begin.

A law demanding spay and nueter of most or all dogs is very frightening to me. I truly want my grandchildren and great grandchildren to know the love of an animal and have them a constant in their lives. I am sure you all do too.
But if all the dogs and cats are sterilized, how many would be left for them 20 years from now?
Mila

I'm the one from CT who talked about the strays. I don't know why my name wasn't on it. I agree that Spay/neuter should be enforced for strays, but to make it mandatory for everyone is a little extreme for me. Vets do advise spaying and or neutering. Would breeders get reported? This is a thin line. It sounds a little too much of a Nazi type law. I have seen the movies about the future where there is mandatory sterilization for people. It's not too far fetched to then move to the next step. China is there with one child per family and the people are finally speaking up against it.

Susan,

That is what I was trying to say but I guess it didn't come out that way. Mandatory spay/neuter for EVERYONE should NOT be enforced. Also, a question I have if anyone can answer: When my daughter bought her french bull mastiff she had to sign a paper saying she would neuter him and not breed him and have the paper sent to the breeder to verify that he was neutered, because the dog she picked wasn't show quality. Any reason for that? Just curious.

Laura

I'm not trying to discredit anyone's views but you can not infringe on the rights of responsible people. I have heard that the reason Connecticut does not have such a problem is that people voluntarily spay and neuter their pets. Aren't people as smart or responsile across the nation as the folks in Connecticut or something? I realize a lot of Connecticut is pretty upscale maybe that has something to do with it too. But anytime they come out with mandatory laws on spaying and neutering, it is the responsible breeders who are hurt the most. They impose heavy fines and or license fees on the legitimate breeders and these by and large are not the people causing the problem. Maybe people who turn in dogs and cats to shelters for no good reason should have to sign something and forfeit their right to future pet ownership or something. Because they almost certainly will do it again in the future. Why penalize reponsible breeders. There are also people who have legitimate working dogs on farms and hunting dogs and these are the people who suffer for others irresponsibility when horrible dog ordinances in Louisville KY and mandatory spay neuter in LosAngeles are enacted. These laws have resulted in civil rights suits. Those cities are being sued and are costing taxpayers even more money.

You can't believe the inflamatory statements by groups like PETA and Animal Liberation Front and HSUS and blame purebred breeders and hunting and herding dog breeders for the problem of all the poor dogs being dumped at shelters and being euthanized. It is all the irresponsible "pet" owners who "move and can't take the dog/cat with us". Maybe someone should move and not take those people with them. It is the guy or girl that dumps their pet because boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't like it. It is the people who just had a baby and we don't have time for the dog/cat, and oh by the way we all never neutered these animals either and these animals all of us have dumped have also contributed over 100 to the pet overpopulation problem. But so what, that is what our taxes that support county shelters go for, so we can dump our animals and you all shelter workers can euthanize them for us and we don't have to watch it.

There are sooooo many people who do not believe the way that we do. I have encountered all of those people that Libby mentioned in her post - some in my own family. I have two animals from my sister alone, because she couldn't "deal" with them. My dog (Saki) was bought from a petstore by my sister, brought home, and she didn't like the fact that he barked at her. (I think he knew she really isn't a dog person, and was pretty much telling her off!). I ended up taking him, because I didn't think it was right to return a dog to a petstore after having him two weeks in your home. Her cat, had ringworm. I paid to have it boarded at a vet's for a while, in the hopes that she would take it back. He's now here with me. I do agree, we should penalize those people who've demonstrated that they're not responsible. Not those who go to extra lengths to ensure that the animals they encounter are taken care of. BTW, all my dogs are spayed/neutered voluntarily, because I don't WANT to be breeder! Too much responsibility! The only way to fight legislation like this, is to not be "sheeps" and to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT and LOUDLY! (legally, of course). You can bet I'm on the bandwagon trying to prohibit this type of legislation. Sorry so wordy! When I get going, I get going!

LAURA: Most responsible breeders do require that a pet puppy be spayed/neutered. #1 it cuts down on overpopulation and #2 the puppy may have a minor flaw such as an incorrect bite, incorrect topline, wrong ear set or tail set but would still make a wonderful pet. Your daughter was fortunate in finding such a responsible breeder who is interested in her breed and not just the money. Hope this answers your question.

NMTSAKI - I also have all animals which have been spayed/neutered, all decided to be spayed/neutered by me with the exception of my precious little Sophie who was already spayed when I adopted her at 4 years of age.

Sophie was one of those "throw away" type animals you mentioned. I will say the owner did seek out a good home for Sophie instead of throwing her on the street or taking her to the pound (thank God). I was the very lucky person who got Sophie although many people had called after seeing the ad on our electronic bulletin board. The owner had talked to her neighbor who posted the ad at SJCRH, and the neighbor told her what an animal lover and rescuer she knew I was. She decided Sophie would go to me because of this.

Sophie has all her papers and is a full-blooded blue-tan chihuahua. So this chick paid good money for her, then decided to get rid of her when she was moving in with her boyfriend and he did not want this precious little girl. Their loss was my gain though! She is a little 8 lb bundle of love and joy, and more precious than gold to me!

Personally, I'm not so sure the owner would have been this responsible about Sophie's new home if not for the direction of this nice lady at SJCRH. Thank God she was there for Sophie!

MARGOT: yes that did answer my question, thanks so much.

Also, very good points being made here and I have the utmost respect for all the responsible breedersl

Laura

Bless all of you who help take in the animals that you can and help where you can. I am not a breeder but do have purebred dogs. All my animals except two (one dog and one cat) are intact though. I have in my 58 years been responsible for only 4 puppies (of which I have 2 myself and know where the other two are) and no kittens brought into this world and do not routinely spay/neuter. Except in the case of cats. I would not have an intact cat and not be a breeder. They are simply too hard to control and I can't stand the behavior of unspayed female cats and marking males. Dogs are not nearly as bad and well trained male dogs do not mark in the house. There are also some health issues more prevalent in spayed animals but when it comes down to the case of the particular animal having a quality life in a good home you can't argue with spaying and neutering. But you can't make it unlawful not to spay your animals because there are responsible people who do not contribute to the problem.

I too have family members that just don't get it about animals. Think I'm crazy for the animal things I personally do where I can help, and contribute time and effort to. And I work at a large midwestern university where you think people would be more educated about animals. A month or so there was a post to the university wide email listserv about someone moving and trying to find a home for their 10year old golden retriever because they can't take the dog with them. Can you imagine? How can you part with a senior animal you have had all its life and what type of people could not see the pain and disorientation this would cause a companion animal plus the fact it is not easy to place a senior animal. This animal was neutered too. That doesn't always help in the throwaway mentality though, but at least it did not contribute to the animal overpopulation problem. These people were graduates of this university and teachers of our children to boot. I fired a personal email to them I was so angry.

I can see where people could be in favor of mandatory spay neuter though. It is a heartbreaking issue. And don't even get started on people who come up with "designer" breeds of dogs to try to find a new niche to sell even more puppies.

Anyway, we have been brainwashed that animals do not have feelings and are not sentient beings and don't form emotional bonds. I think it is beginning to change but you just have to keep hammering away at it to change such deeply rooted prejudices. I just don't see how passing laws is going to change people's attitudes. You just have to keep on promoting education and do what you personally can to help.

If anyone has time, Vivi, Dante and Sarge need candles. Has anyone heard anything on Sarge?

Thanks for the reminder Kay. I just lit some.

Kay, Debbie of NY woke me up this morning to blah, blah at me.......gotta love that blabber mouth...She was on her way to pick up someone to help put flyers around for Sarge....The time change had me messed up, or so I said..heh...Nothing new on sightings that I know of.
LIGHT A CANDLE FOR VIVI, DANTE AND SARGE AND ALL THE OTHER BABIES AND HUMANS WHO COULD USE A PRAYER OR TWO.

Dante, Trotter and Zipper will be at my house tomorrow on their way to the South Fork of the American for a little vacation for Valeries..Dante is hanging in with his health issues..

New Pedigree commercial. Echo was adopted. YAY!

Thanks for the update Rooooby. I can't stop thinking about him out there with his leash on. Enjoy you day with all the babies.

I don't remember the original post - does anyone remember what type of collar Sarge had on? I personally don't collar my dogs in the yard, but when I absolutely have to take them out on leash, they're wearing the "break away" collars. Oh - and I do yard train my dogs, so they don't leave the premises (and they're microchipped). I had a dog almost choke once, with a regular collar on, and since then, only supervised collar wearing. Yard training does work, even with whippets (I have one, and a also part lab-whippet). I was having trouble with a crazy neighbor (too long to go into!), but she kept leaving my gate wide open. I only noticed because I had three dogs, all sitting in a line, staring at the open gate. I looked to where they were looking, at and was very thankful for the training. Even a minute or two hesitation is good enough, in some cases! Long story short: locks, lots of videos, and she finally moved! (yeah! just this week!). My babies are safe once again! OK - blathering on. Hopefully Sarge is wearing a break away collar, and he doesn't have his leash on anymore????? I too have worried about that. Still praying for Vivi and Sarge.

I'm so happy to read that Echo was adopted. Those commercials really get to me, but if these babies are getting happy endings they're doing their purpose.
Praying for happy endings for all our lost furry babies.

I had read that Echo and all the other dogs in the commercials were adopted right away! Perhaps these types of commercials should continue year long, featuring different shelters-keeps the animals in dire need right up front in the publics face.

JoAnn is posting for Sargeant on his January thread and she and the others are working so hard for him. Fingers crossed that the massive postings will work to get him home.
Wishing the same for VIVI. Someone suggested that her poster be hung right next to Sargeants and I think that is a fine idea.

I agree Anonymous @ 6:20...why not hang vivi posters along with the ones for Sarge...couldn't hurt..

I don't understand what you mean by "Joann is posting for Sargeant on his JANUARY thread"......January? I'm confused as usual..

Val and the pups are still in my area...We were to visit the RV and the river today, but we had a lot of rain and its too messy for 5 Whippets to be running around in the mud.......Dante didn't like the sound of the rain on his grandpa's RV last night and had Val up til 3...Poor Dante, poor Val..

Rooby, if you go to the archives and click on January 2008, you can find the original thread on Sargent. Joann just recently posted a update on there.

There was a Sarge sighting I believe Wed or Thurs, no leash or collar, sounds like him and if it is he is not far from where he got lost, seems like he is staying close to the area, almost same places Vivi was. Flyers have been put up all over, I was out yesterday and covered alot of ground away. All the parks connect in this area and they are huge if you look on the map and little parks in between, had no idea there was so much woodsy areas until you start driving.

Keep the fingers crossed we get more sightings. Nice weather may bring him out more.Gotta get this boy home, I see Vivi flyers in the places I post around the parks, amazing, even big ones are still up.

Debbie, nice to hear that there was a sighting this past week. I know you gals will bring this cutey in and maybe Sargeant will bring his new friend, Vivi, also. I just read in a magazine about a dog, lost during a move, who was found after 2 years when the family moved back to the same town. The husband found him in a shelter and brought him home as a wonderful surprise to his wife and daughters. Miracles are happening; Sniffles has reinforced my belief.
Good luck on the search this weekend.

Roooby, kisses to Dante and to Val and the rest of her gang! I hope Dante is doing ok and I know you all had a great visit
.
If Sargeant is sighted in basically the same area then the odds are good day that one of you will see him!! I am still checking the online shelter sites for NYC for him just in case he gets picked up. But sounds like he is still out there!!! Oh, how we all want him home with JoAnn!! Let today be the day that he goes home.

Yes, Sniffles and his survival for 2 years and being rescued is a miracle and it will happen for Vivi, too.
Sniffles is doing very well now and a foster home is waiting for him. He needs to put on some more weight and I am told that he is such a sweetie, gentle and loving. And of course GEORGIOUS!!! I had sent a picture of him to Denise to post here-maybe she will!!!
Mila

MILA - That is such good news for Sniffles. If you want to e-mail me his new picture, I will upload into Photobucket and post the link on here for all to view.

Praying Sarge and Vivi (and all others) will be home and safe soon.

Hi all,

Vivi only has 14 candles and Sarge only has 5. I'm going to light some. Any news on Sarge this weekend?

Thanks for the reminder Libby. I got busy this weekend and just forgot.

A Miracle for Vivi. Today!

Happy Easter to everyone and may the Easter bunny find a very overdue lost whippet girl.

Laura

Ladies in New York - I have been watching the Animal Planet and the ASPCA show in New York. Tonight, there was a Laura (a volunteer from Bobbi and The Strays) on there who was fostering a pitbull named Asia. Is this any of the Laura's on the blog here? Was just wondering.
