It's a gimmic, but if it will help a local shelter get a makeover, you can spare the clicks.
Zootoo.com is running a contest for a shelter makeover. The more you participate on the site, the more points are awarded to a shelter of your choice. Right now, Little Shelter in Huntington is tied for the number-five spot, with 509,318 points, followed by Queens-based Bobbi & the Strays at #10 (Vivi fans will remember that group's help in the JFK-based search ) and the Freeport Animal Shelter at #14 (arguably one of Long Island's most down-at-the-heels private shelters).
No matter who you vote for, they are all deserving!

_Bobbi And The Strays
B-J, I just joined and voted for Bobbi and the Strays. It is ranked #9.
B-J I just joined also. Bobi still #9.
Thank you Susan and Margot.:) number 1 has over a million votes. So that's going to be almost impossible to beat. But as long as we are in the top 20 we have a chance.:) We have one third the vote approximately. So we have to keep racking up the points to stay there as it gets closer to the end of the contest as I am sure everyone will be trying in full force the closer it gets. We really could use a makeover. We,ve had to use hlaf the Vet Ports space these cold months and there's a nominal boarding fee for each dog we have in there. We rescued two dogs with a total of 9 pups and it's been hectic. Still trying to get a pit that was dumped at JFK for a month now.
DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ANOTHER PET FOOD RECALL? I RECEIVED EMAILS FROM A CHATTER WHO SAID NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE AND SOME OF THE NUTRO MAX, DRY FOOD HAS BEEN RECALLED.
I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ABOUT IT AND ANY OF THE LINKS THE GAL SENDS ME, I CAN'T OPEN.
ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING? AGAIN, THIS IS VERY UPSETTING! NUTRO IS NO HELP AT ALL, THEY GIVE YOU THE USUAL BLAH, BLAH AND THAT SOLVES NOTHING.
ROOBY28575
ROOOOOBY: Checked Pet Connection and Itchmo and there's nothing about a recent recall. She must have sent you from the old recall list.
.
Thanks Margot...I'm thinking an old recall list, but I'll send you the 2008 thing I have..xoxoRooby
Rooby - I got the same e-mail about Nutro. I hope it's from the old recall list.

I read several of the complaints about the nutro dog food. Of course, I am really worried. I have been feeding all three of my dogs a mixture of 1/2 canidae and 1/2 nutro max senior with glucosamine and chondroitin, one of the formulations complained about. One of my dogs (don't know which one yet), has been throwing up when I'm at work. Other two seem to be fine.
Kathy- thanks for the link.
This is too funny not to share. And I know we could all use a hearty laugh here and there.:)
WARNING: Do not drink or eat while reading.
Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife.
A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this:
Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The
occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something
extra for my wife Julie.
What I came across was a 100,000-volt,pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her
adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL!
Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home.I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn
thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!!Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie
what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.
Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with
only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie
looking on intently (trusting littlesoul) while I was reading the directions
and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood
moving target.I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a
second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was
going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did
want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? So, there I
sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched
delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in
another.
The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient
your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a
major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your
assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than
three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I'm looking at
this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in
circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy
triple-Abatteries) thinking to myself, "no possible way!"
What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best...?
I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, "don't do it
dipshit," reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing
couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just
for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button,
and . . . HOLY MOTHER OF GOD . . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE
HELL!!!I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me
up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and
over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with
tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to
be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and
tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard
before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in
an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living
room. Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a taser, one
note ofcaution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap
yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your
hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be
considered conservative? SON-OF-A-BITCH, THAT HURT LIKE HELL!!! A minute
or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I
collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the
landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The
recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally
was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face
felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88
lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparrently I shit myself, but was
too numb to know for sure and my sence of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke
cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking
for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!!
P.S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it!
"If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid."
Oh BJ that is so funny. I laughed so hard I chocked.
Has anyone heard anything about Sarge?
I actually have one of those little stun guns that I bought about 10 years ago. Thank goodness I never tried it out on anyone! (I'm also glad to hear it works!). I'm still praying for Sarge and Vivi's safe return. Love to hear any news.

Here's a link to the latest from the FDA on pet food recalls, updated 02/06/08. I haven't heard anything new but can check the list for what you are using.
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html
For those that use Nutro, there is a difference between Nutro Max and Nutro Ultra. Most all of the Max formulas contain corn and wheat while the others are more their deluxe (and expensive) line. No one in my breed likes any Nutro foods so at least the concensus in malamutes is they do not do well on it. There are probably others who do well on it. But there was also some information on Nutro about some of their products not being allowed to come into the US at the Port of Los Angeles just this past summer. The FDA blocked one of their shipments so some of their foods, or ingredients are not manufactured in the US. either, if that is a concern for anyone given where most of the contaminants came from in the last big scare. The article I read about it said Nutro was contacted repeatedly about where their products were coming from and Nutro would not respond which was no big surprise to the person investigating.
Just FYI
All the nutros listed are canned. There's no mention of dried foods, which is indicated on the consumers webpage. Based on other comments, I think I'm switching my dogs to something else, just to be on the safe side. I couldn't forgive myself if I didn't throw out a $30.00 bag of dog food, and something happened to one of them.
Love 'em a little more than $30. Maybe $40 (!)
I KNEW THE NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE AND THE MAX WERE DIFF..I WAS AT A DOG SHOW YEARS AGO TALKING TO THE NUTRO REP..SHE SAID NUTRO MAX NO WHERE COMPARED TO THE NUTRO NAT. CHOICE.
I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT NUTRO SOLD TO MARS..MARS MAKES PEDIGREE I THINK AND A FEW OTHERS.....
DON'T FORGET VIVI'S CANDLES AND ALSO, DANTE..
XOXOROOBY
Sarge needs candles also.

Take a peek at our photos of dogs at the shelter and ones in new homes. We really are running out of space. I know we all are I am sure. We pay a nominal fee for our space at the JFK Vet Port. When we run out of room we pay a discounted fee for any dogs we board on the Vet Port side. We currently have 6 dogs boarded by Vet Port (one of which is NYC Mayor Alliance that has 7 pups) So we really really could use you help. Thanks:)
