I'm getting a lot of nice emails the world over from today's column, which talks about my beloved breed being placed on a list of "dangerous dogs" in Dublin, Ireland.
Anyone who lives with these intuitive hounds knows that their default with children is demonstrated by my intact 8-year-old male, Blitz, and my then-2-year-old son, Stephen, pictured here.

Susan, I have started a candle site for all Pitbulls, you can light a candle and say a prayer for these poor dogs. Did they get any of the people connected to the fighting?
I might also add, Michael Vicks is being investigated for having fights at his Va home. He of course denies it, but I'm hoping he'll be convicted. He moved to Texas and says relatives now own the house where dozens of Pitbull bodies were found and at least 60 live Pitbulls...

Michael Vick lives in Georgia. If he didn't know what was happening at his own house in Virginia, where his whole family is from and where he visits, it is because he doesn't care to know. Keep writing Nike, which he endorses, and refusing to buy their products.

I waited until the funeral was over today to post this as I have been kind of emotional about everything.
Thursday night my great-aunt, Janie Dale, who I was named after, Kathleen Dale, passed away suddenly. She would have celebrated her 100th birthday on December 11th of this year. Aunt Janie was the oldest sister of my precious grandmother who raised me. She was very precious to me in so many ways. She was the true Southern "Steel Magnolia" through all - and it was only right I was named after her. We have always had very similar personalities too.
Aunt Janie was the one who taught me my first love for horses and riding. She was an avid rider, and I have so many wonderful memories of her and these days from my grandmother. She also was an animal rescuer and lover as I have always been brought up to be as well.
She had a family only graveside service after visitation, and we each shared a scripture, prayer and memories of our dear Aunt Janie. She never had any children of her own, but all of her nieces, nephrews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and even great-great-nephews and great-great nieces WERE HER CHILDREN. She loved each of us uniquely, and shared her joy for life with each of us as well. She always made each of us feel we were very special to her.
When it was my turn to share my memories, I had so many wonderful ones from she and my grandmother to share. But I wanted all of you to know the most special memory was when I brought out her love for all animals. I told them a little about the animal rescue work and horse lobbying I try to do now. I also told them each of these creatures I help reminds me of my grandparents and Aunt Janie always, and I find myself always saying outloud, "This one is for you grandma, grandpa or Aunt Janie." So Kathy (CO), we must get the transportation of our horses stopped - for my precious Aunt Janie's memory.
I ended my part by reading "The Rainbow Bridge." There was not a dry eye in the place, and I realized then how much this precious lady had instilled that same love for animals in all of us along the way. Her service ended with this, and my final statement, "I know when grandma, grandpa and Aunt Janie got to that Rainbow Bridge, there was one hell of a stampede!" So the service ended with everyone having a good laugh and smiling at this sight in their minds - and that is exactly what Aunt Janie would have loved!
Thanks for allowing me to share my deep, deep feelings for this wonderful legacy of my life with all of you. God has blessed me so much in my life - I have been allowed to know my great-grandparents, my great-uncles, great-aunts, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many more. Our family seems to stay around this old Earth a pretty long time - and each of these have had a very profound influence in my life as well.
Kathleen, I'm so sorry about your great-Aunt Janie. She must have been a wonderful lady and the animals at the Rainbow Bridge are very lucky to have her to care for them.
Denise, I love the picture and talked about the Ridgeback mommy nursing the baby panther on the other post. I can't stand people labeling breeds "dangerous". They're in danger because of what happens when the wrong people get them, not the majority of Ridgebacks who are with loving families. Sounds an awful like judging people by the color of their skin or other characteristics. Ignorance is dangerous, not bliss.

Okay, why on earth is my posting listed multiple times? How strange... Anyway,Rooooby, they did catch the guy - 29 years old. Neighbors said, "He always seemed so nice... but so was John Wayne Gacey!"
I hope they throw the book at him. My heart breaks, but knowing that they will never again have to feel pain gives me some sort of comfort.
As far as Michael Vick, I will email Nike and tell all my friends not to support Nike and anyone he endorses.

Everyone who posts to this site obviously loves dogs.... breed doesn’t matter to me. Pure bread or a mutt. Fat, skinny, tall, short, ornery, shy, temperamental... Doesn’t matter to me.
I recently found out that Michael Vicks of the Atlanta Falcons is being investigated for having dog fights in his Virginia home. Approximately three dozen carcuses of dogs were found on his property, along with 60 live pit bulls who were malnourished, scarred, and injured.
Now here’s a man who has been given an opportunity that only exists as a dream for most kids: to be a multi million dollar quarterback with the NFL. Instead of setting a good example, he has become an undeserving monster – someone that I certainly wouldn't want my child to look up to.
Vicks endorsees Nike, Air Tran Airways, EA Sports, Coca-Cola, Powerade, Kraft, Rawlings, and Hasbro. If you are one to take action (like me), I ask that you write to these companies and tell them that Michael Vicks of the Atlanta Falcons shouldn’t have the privilege to endorse such reputable companies. If you don’t have time to write a short note, then, as a friend, please think twice before you purchase their products.
If you have reservation because dog fighting only pertains to pit bulls, remember two things:
1) Pit bulls aren’t the only breed involved. Dog fighting can include all types of dogs – and even cats. 2) Blame the deed, not the breed.
Dog fighting is not only a problem of cruelty to animals; dog fighting is also part of a criminal subculture that can involve gang activity, drug use, and drug dealing, and it contributes to the destruction of neighborhoods. In addition, it’s a fact that those that can be cruel to an animal are likely to hurt a human being down the road.
Vicks should be removed from the NFL – there’s so many other talented folks out there who would appreciate the value of life so much more than this heartless, gutless creature who considers himself a man.

Someone in NYC is trying to get rid of her old car and wants to donate to an animal/wildlife organization. She left messages for a few local shelters the last few days and no one has called her back. Anyway - she says she needs to get rid of this car ASAP....Does anyone have any suggestions of places that NEED car donations (animal related). She lives in NYC. I will pass the information on to her. Thanks.

Just read this on the TWR
A new Cavel owned horse slaughter plant has recently opened in Canada and the lovely horse dealer that handles these particular horses is having quite a bit of success shipping one to two truckloads of our horses per week to this new plant. He could care less whether we are trying to save any particular horses or not, if he has a truck going and there is room, all horses are fair game to fill those empty spots.
I guess this explains why Cavel is not fighting too hard to reopen in IL.
We have to get these laws changed and have to do it now.
Kathleen, just wanted to let you know that Maximus, the dog in New York, passed away this morning. I called Save-A-Pet to see how he was doing and they told me the news.

i don't think anyone can understand how much i hate people right now... (ok not all but ALOT...) i did read the story of maximus and i saw pictures of him. i'm one of those that can. it kills me and i cry uncontrollably while reading these kind of stories so i ask myself why i do it and all i can think is that it's because it makes me mad and it makes me want to try harder to change things. oh i don't know, i'm babbling because i'm so heartbroken. i just can't fathom the idea of intentionally hurting an animal. of standing there and consciously doing it on purpose. i freak when i accidentally step on one of my baby's feet and they yelp!!!
i really thought poor maximus would make it but i guess the poor baby's injuries were too much. he was loved his last moments...
not only would i like a few minutes with this person or persons who did this, i would have liked to come upon them while they were starting the deed and stopped them in my own way. i would have gladly gone to jail for it because as far as i'm concerned i would have cleaned the earth of useless garbage...

I read Denise's column for the first time Monday evening on my way to dinner in the city. Not only am I a lover of all animals I have a special affinity for the truly lovable Dobermans. I was blessed with my first Doberman puppy a year ago and while she is a headstrong little pup she is the most gentle creature. My Dobe, Jada is not my first companion however she never seizes to amaze me at how smart and heart filled she can be. She is the mushiest pet I could ever imagine there be. She can never get close enough to me, always tying to cuddle a little closer and a little closer. And she is always aware of children around her, always making sure their high pitched laughter is just that and not cries.
I find the banning of these particular breeds such a closed minded approach. How can any person in their right mind, let alone the educated law makers see this as a solution. The issue is the criminals that fight the stronger breeds...so the Irish are ok with these people walking the street with the same irrational mentality who will prey on something else. Whenever people give me that arrogant face when they hear I am an owner/lover of Doberman I always say that it is not the breed. If little teacup yorkies were strong and muscular they would choose to fight them. I am curious...how do we let our countries be led/ruled by people who have such prejudices and lack the intelligence to see the real issues?

WANT TO WARN YOU OF A SCAM. Any shelter could well be targeted-we are
a
licensed facility located in SW Missouri and have been "in business"
for
over 15 years.
Recently we received an e-mail from an individual saying he was in
California and would like to send us a donation for all our good
works.
We wrote him back saying he could donate via PayPal through
our website, mail a check to our PO Box or adoption center in
Springfield, Missouri. So far so good. We received a cashiers check
written on Washington Mutual Bank for $5,000. Of course we were
thrilled to pieces-we sure could use the money. The check was
deposited.
A few days later, we received an e-mail from the donor saying he was
so
sorry, but his accountant had made a terrible error and the amount
should have been for $500 and not $5,000 - would we please mail or
wire
back $4,500. Of course the red flags went up and we contacted the bank
immediately; they said it sounded like a scam. The real kicker is
that a
few days later, our bank called to say it was a
forged check. It was returned to us marked `Refer to Maker-Suspect
Counterfeit' You are responsible for monies deposited in your
account!
So the cashiers check goes through and you think it's good because the
cash is deposited.
It's only a few days later that the check is discovered to be forged.
Shelters are perfect targets for this scam although it is horrifying
to think that some low-life would try to cheat a no-kill animal
shelter.
This individual e-mailed us several times expressing concern that we
had
not wired the money back - it was to be wired to a number and the e-
mail
was on Yahoo.
We suspect he was located outside th! e country - he said he was "on
leave
in the Republic of Ireland" - well if you spoke English, you'd say you
were on vacation or on holiday and you would just say "Ireland!" The
FBI
has been informed, but frankly the amount was not large enough for
them
to bother with-we have also notified Yahoo. Please, please forward
this
e-mail to every shelter you know.
If this creep just got one check returned, he is making a good
living.

It really is scary to think how many scums there are that would try a scam like this and not have any qualms about who gets hurt in the process!!
I copied and emailed that ESPN dog fighting-Vick survey to Nike. We need to work on them until they dump him. Should have already happened. I think they will. He's useless to them now.
This is what they wrote to me- this time- it's getting better, believe it or not. This is what they say before they dump them:

Please immediately suspend Michael Vick from the NFL for his alleged involvement in dogfighting. Vick's recent indictment by a federal grand jury for crimes related to dogfighting is a certain sign that you must treat this matter seriously. Reports of extreme cruelty to dogs who didn't "perform" to the fighters' satisfaction only add to the disgrace Vick brings to the NFL.
I read the Falcons release pertaining to Michael Vick and how they will continue to support players and coaches. What about the three dozen carcuses of dogs that were found on his property and the 60 live dogs who were malnourished, scarred, and injured. Where's their support? What about the innocent
creatures that don't have a say.
Yes, I understand Vick is claiming it's not "him"... but I find it very hard to believe someone doesn't know what's going on in their own home (especially something so horrific as this!).
Now here's a man who has been given an opportunity that only exists as a dream for most kids: to be a multi million dollar quarterback with the NFL. Instead of setting a good example, he has become an undeserving monster... someone that I certainly
wouldn't want my child to look up to. I often find myself asking, what happened to the true sports hero... the Michael Jordans and Walter Paytons of the world?!?!
Michael Vick shouldn't have the privilege to be part of the NFL, nor should he have the honor to endorse any sort of reputable company... There are so many other talented folks out there who would appreciate the value of life so much more than this heartless, gutless creature who considers himself a man.
Bottom line: As a human being, think about what this man has done and what he's capable of. Is this the type of person you want your children to look up to? You know as well I that he had involvement.
Get rid of him and let someone more deserving carry the honor!

I just read on CNN that this moron has a court date on the 26th for these charges, looks like they have some people who are going to testify against him.
He has the potential to earn 130 million and he has to fight dogs for money, as they say the more you have the greedier you get, Nike, coca-cola and whomever endorses him should take the money and donate it to shelters, that's what I am going to say in my emails to them.

Vick said he didn't live in the house IF and when dog fighting was going on and yet people saw him...He blew out of town like he was shot from a cannon when word got out about the fighting..If we knew half the things that occured in that house and what happened with the dogs, we'd be sick..I've pretty much kept on top of the reports and the man is a miserable abuser.

This was an email that came from one of our Vivi gals, I say we email them all and ask them to drop this jerk and ask them to donate the money they pay him to shelters. The more voices the better, who knows maybe one of them will donate money to help these animals, also the humane society is asking for donations for the 52 dogs they seized from his property, these companies should give it to the rehabilitstion for the animals he abused, it's the right thing to do.

Also the reward for the jerk or jerks who poured gas on maximus and left him there for 2 days to die before he was found has been raised to $5000.00 now.
