Horse sense

With the death of their beloved racehorse, some FOBs -- that would be Friends of Barbaro -- have turned to activism. Among their causes celebres: the passage of anti-horse slaughter bills currently in both houses.

At the end of last week, the last operative American slaughterhouse for horses suspended operation when a temporary court order allowing it to stay open was to expire and federal judge refused to renew it.

Retired_horse The epicenter of this grass-roots campaign is a Wiki page on the web site of a Maryland racing stable. There, you'll find point/counterpoint arguments, upcoming anti-slaughter events, even daily talking points for calls to legislators.

Denise - Thank you very much for this thread announcing our causes we are all working so hard on. Hopefully one of these days all animals will be treated with dignity and love. I am definitely ready for this day!

Thank you Denise for bringing this issue to this blog --- unfortunately not only the elderly and sick meet the slaughterhouse but young, healthy, yearlings, pregnant mares, colts - horses of all ages and health - whatever the killbuyer can get his hands on and sell for the going rate per pound ends up in slaughterhouses. For now, none in the US but they are still being shipped to Canada and even worse - Mexico where there is absolutely no humanity in their dying.

I thank you again for bringing this awareness to your blog. PLEASE GET YOUR CONGRESSMENT TO COSPONSOR S311 OR HR503 - THESE BILLS MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE VOTE AND PASSED OR OUR NATIONS HORSES WILL CONTINUE TO DIE AN AGONIZING DEATH AT THE HANDS OF THE SLAUGHTERHOUSES.

Thanks Kathy. The Tennessee Call Group is really trying, but these Congressmen (except Steve Cohen) are just not minding us.

May be time to knock a few TN Congressmen in the head!

Here is a nice story about lifelong commitment to a horse. This would be me if Mr. Smart had lived long enough. I have had one horse, from 16 months old -I was 14- in 1970 to his death at age 25.
http://wcco.com/topstories/local_story_182182524.html

Nice story. My niece rides on a horse that is way into its 20's I believe. Last year when I was visiting them, the family got a call from the owner of the horse. Horse was very ill & was not expected to live. They got my niece out there to say goodbye to the horse. All very sad. Horse lingered for a few days and then made a miraculous recovery! Last I heard, I believe she was still riding the horse. It is nice to see that these elderly equines can be taken care of.

First, an article in this edition of Hunt magazine: http://home.comcast.net/~jilldh/Rescue/Hunt_Summer_07.pdf

Second, meet Esther, a rescue from New Holland yesterday. Obviously an Amish work horse with callouses and rubs from an ill-fitting yoke. Yes, we normally only rescue thoroughbreds, but Esther truly deserved to be rescued and Bev is SO great about choosing among all of the horses there and Esther caught her eye.

http://home.comcast.net/~jilldh/Rescue/Esther.jpg

What really freaked me out about Esther was that she stood so still tied to this fence after we bought her. I stood there talking to her and rubbing her and she never moved a muscle. She did finally look me in the eye with a very confused look, and her eye is very soulful. But as I was standing with her waiting on them to load all of the horses we rescued, she suddenly scooted away from me and turned her head away. I looked over my shoulder and an Amishman was coming to load her. That's the only time all day that I welled up with tears.

She's now turned out with my buddy, Oldfields, and when I pulled up to the rescue at 4 this morning, she was lying down in the paddock and he was standing guard over her. :) She has NO clue what human love is - it totally confuses her. I am determined to teach her.

Hi Jill - What a sweet story and how beautiful Esther is. You will win her over girl, you always do! How many times have you had your heart broken when you lost one of your dear friends, but your heart is always right there for the next one - and they know this. Give Esther that love she has never known, and don't forget the peppermint and licorice in honor of "you know who!"

Tink says hello too....

I have been following Bev's missing horse on TWR. Any news. Is there anything I can do to help in the search. Praying for this poor baby. One thought went through my mind, do you think with the head injury someone could have taken him to hide fearing being turned over to the authorities? Just a thought.

This is a food animal in the rest of the world. It, like the rest of your pets, is not a "person" covered in fur/hair with "learning issues"!

Thanks, Kathleen - but, Bev is on it and has a great network and an incredible working relationship with all of the "players" in this situation. Just some things that can't be shared, but trust me - if any one can find this horse it will be Bev. A lot of shady stuff happens in this and the less people involved, the better the chances of a good ending. The girl knows what she is doing and is very good at what she does!

Jill - Thanks. Let her know my prayers are with her for finding this sweetie and giving him a wonderful forever home soon.

Jill - saw your pix of Esther on the TWR thread --- she is so beautiful ---- what a miserable life she must have had.....I always thought the Amish honored and loved their animals but I guess I was wrong.

??? Bev put it on TWR? LOL!!! I got her to eat feed out of my hand yesterday. Totally confused her as she wanted it, but didn't know how to get it. She'd turn her head sideways and flap her lips around my hand. She finally got it.

The Amish see their animals as we see our cars. It's a "thing".

Keep up the good work with Esther. She deserves alot of TLC.

GOOD NEWS ABOUT THE FARM BILL. JILL, TELL ESTHER THIS ONE IS FOR HER!

---------------------------------
Humane Society Applauds House Agriculture Committee for Removing “Great Federal Power Grab” from Farm Bill, and Eliminating Earmark for Veal

July 7, 2007

WASHINGTON (July 7, 2007)—Late last night, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture released its latest mark-up of the 2007 Farm Bill, and The Humane Society of the United States thanked the committee for removing a little-known but far-reaching provision that had threatened to nullify dozens of animal welfare and food safety laws enacted through democratic decision-making at the state and local level, as well as removing a $12 million subsidy for the veal industry.

Section 123 of Title I of the Farm Bill – included in an earlier draft by the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry but removed from the version released last night – had specified that "no State or locality shall make any law prohibiting the use in commerce of an article that the Secretary of Agriculture has (1) inspected and passed; or (2) determined to be of non-regulated status."

The HSUS had advocated for the removal of this provision, and was joined by a wide array of consumer groups and environmental and farming organizations, including the National Association of Counties, National Conference of State Legislatures, Consumers Union, Environmental Defense, Rice Growers of California, and American Corn Growers Association.

"We are grateful to Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson and Livestock Subcommittee Chairman Leonard Boswell for removing Section 123 from the Farm Bill," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "This provision was an overreach and we are glad the committee pulled the provision. We look forward to working with the committee on other provisions to construct a Farm Bill that includes animal welfare provisions supported by the American people."

If passed, Section 123 could have stricken numerous state and local laws—ranging from prohibitions against horse slaughter to bans on the cruel treatment of farm animals. Because the wording of the section would have prohibited state laws on any article that the Secretary of Agriculture has "inspected and passed," The HSUS feared it was so broad that it could have been used to threaten animal welfare laws that do not even relate to food production, such as restricting abusive puppy mills and the ownership of dangerous exotic pets.

In addition to Section 123, another provision removed from the new version of the Farm Bill was a $12 million subsidy for the U.S. veal industry. This earmark had been previously offered as an amendment by Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wisc.) and approved by a subcommittee vote of 8 to 6. Veal consumption has been on the decline primarily because Americans view the practice of keeping young calves in small crates as inhumane, and last year Arizona became the first state to ban veal crates. The HSUS had advocated for the removal of this earmark and expressed its thanks to the committee for declining to reimburse this industry for previous losses.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization—backed by 10 million Americans, or one of every 30. For more than a half-century, The HSUS has been fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, education, and hands-on programs. I think Miles misses his mommy - she's out of town for a few days and this is where I found him. :)

Fantastic, Jill.

I like the pictures, Jill and they are lucky to have you in their lives. It is so quiet here. Hoping we hear good news soon. Annie being found has renewed my hope.

Good morning everyone. Such a beautiful day. No slaughterhouses open in the USA! Yipppeee!!!!

Here is the Call Strategy for Today. Kathy (CO) asked me to post for you gals. Thanks for the help.
------------------
Current Strategy
The current strategy is to get more co-sponsors in both the House (HR503) and the Senate (S311).

The sponsors of both of these bills have indicated that they will not move forward until there is enough support to assure success.

The public is being asked to contact their congressmen and senators and ask them to co-sponsor their respective bills.

We have been asked NOT to call the leadership yet. There are several reasons...one is that there is a hold on S311 and we need 60 cosponsors to break a hold. The other is that they are looking for more cosponsors in the House to ensure success. The legislators who introduced these bills HR503 and S311 will not make that kind of a move until they believe they have a very good chance to get it passed. To do it any other way would be to set themselves up for failure. So, while it does get frustrating (and boring at times), the key is still cosponsors.

Strategy will change as this campaign progresses into the next stage.

TODAY'S STRATEGY WITH TALKING POINTS
1. Let your Senators know that now that two of the slaughter houses are closed in this country are closed permanently and the third is closed for the time being, it is URGENT that we get this legislation passed to stop the transport of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that their support isn't enough but we NEED the co-sponsors for S311 to get this to the floor for a vote. You can let them know you are aware there is a hold on the bill and they are the only ones that can help us move forward.

3. Tell your congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

3. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

Strategy for Tuesday July 10
We’ve had wonderful news about Cavel last Thursday. And more good news about Section 123 of the Farm Bill. All of these things buy us time to get this federal legislation passed while knowing that no horses are being slaughtered on American soil!!

However, the slaughter of our horses will NEVER stop for good without the passage of federal legislation. Everyday that passes, more American horses are being transported out of this country to meet their horrible fate.

With all three slaughter houses shut down in America, we must now STOP THE CRUEL AND INHUMANE TRANSPORTATION. Tell your Senators/Representatives how much our horses are suffering on their way to Canada and Mexico. Each day the federal legislation is not passed our horses continue to suffer a cruel and inhumane journey.

There is still a need for state groups…. they’ve been VERY effective in getting cosponsors. Right now we’re looking for leaders in for Missouri, Louisiana, Vermont and New Hampshire. To find out how you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

Also, don't forget the importance of scheduling appointments with your OWN legislators. Those that have done so have found it very enlightening to their lawmakers. Even if they are not in their local offices now, you can meet with the District Manager or schedule an appointment for a future date.

Several offices have informed us that the pro slaughter people are more organized than ever and are making a lot of noise this year. We can’t let them be louder than us. Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great day!!!

ADDITIONAL ACTION TO TAKE:

JOIN A STATE CALLING GROUP - THEY WORK!!

We have many calling groups organized at the state level; they have proven very helpful in gaining cosponsors, as constituent calls are the most effective.
Below is a list of the existing state groups, and the email addresses of the group leaders. If you live in any of these states, please email the state leader and join your calling group. It will only take a few minutes a day and can accomplish so much!!
If your state is not listed, please volunteer to be the state leader so we can get your state up and running. Just email Steph at sbreaux1@verizon.net; she can get you set up and walk you through the whole process. We especially need help in:

I'm glad to hear that Esther is responding to you, Jill. Keep sending updates on her. I'm not sure about who Miles is???

Miles is an ancient old pony who was bought at New Holland for $25. No one wanted him - not even the kbs. He has full run of the yard and wanders around all day - goes in the barn when he wants to eat or wants shade, hangs out with the rescue dogs, hangs out by the other horse's paddocks - just whatever he wants to do. I think he has species-identity crisis. He's not sure if he's a horse or a dog!

Jillll, I feel like that sometimes too only I doubt that anyone would give $25 for me...sometimes I just wander around too........Maybe I need a peppermint huh?

I know I'm not a horse or a dog, but what in the hell am I? xooooooooackkkkkkkkkkkk

Roooooooooooooooby - you are the one and only.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox Pam

P. S. The one and only what??????????
Miles sounds like a very adorable horse. A horse that thinks he might be a dog. That's cute.

Ya wanna see Miles the star?? Here's Miles with his bestest friend. This was a photo shoot that was part of an auction:

Not bad for a $25 pony no one wanted!

Rooobs - I keep telling you to come out here - OR we can ship Esther your way.

PLEASE PEOPLE: Pray for my Satchel Whippet. He's been having some problems and he's at the vet right now and will be there for a day or so...I'm very upset and can only pray that he will be ok...I caught it fast as I know my dogs well and know when they aren't feeling well...He had tooth surgery one weeks ago and was doing fine, no issues, but he starting vomiting yesterday , 4 times and today he wasn't interested in his food. I had him at the vets where he is at this moment, getting fluids, xrays and antibiotics and whatever he needs. I'm worred, he has never, ever been away from me since I got him at 8 weeks, except when I was in the hospital..........I'm very worried...

I didn't have a good night! I have been worried sick about him and have no idea what caused this problem. The xray showed a "gas pattern..suspicious gas shadow"...the did an upgraded blood panel...He had one a week ago when he had dental cleaning and two teeth removed...

Good Morning FOB's

Strategy for Friday July 13

Once again we wait to hear news about Cavel’s request
for a TRO and we know that our horses will NEVER be
safe until we pass this federal legislation. Everyday
that passes, more American horses are being
transported out of this country to meet their horrible
fate and we know that slaughter could resume in this
country at any time!

Even with all three slaughter houses shut down in
America, we must STOP THE CRUEL AND INHUMANE
TRANSPORTATION.
Tell yourSenators/Representatives how much our horses
are suffering on their way to Canada and Mexico. Each
day the federal legislation is not passed our horses
continue to suffer a cruel and inhumane journey.

There is still a need for state groups…. Under the
leadership of Stephanie from CA they’ve become VERY
effective in getting cosponsors. To find out how you
can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net A special
thanks to Steph and to all her State Leaders who have
done such a wonderful job. You can find a complete
list of State Leaders on the Wiki Anti Slaughter Link.

Also, don't forget the importance of scheduling
appointments with your OWN legislators. Those that
have done so have found it very enlightening to their
lawmakers. Even if they are not in their local offices
now, you can meet with the District Manager or
schedule an appointment for a future date.

Several offices have informed us that the pro
slaughter people are more organized than ever and are
making a lot of noise this year. We can’t let them be
louder than us.

We still have a long way to go and we must stay
focused and work together. A house divided cannot
stand! Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be
heard!!

Thanks and have a great weekend

It appears this just came in

CAVEL DENIED AGAIN TODAY!!!!

HOORAY!!!!

Great news. Thank you God.

HEY EVERYONE!

Judge Kapala knew it was the birthday of our horse lady, Kathy in Colorado. He just gave her one of the biggest and "bestest" birthday presents she could get - other than maybe another greyhound (haaaa)!

Happy Birthday Kathy! Hope you have had a wonderful one. You deserve it for all your kind and sweet work for these horseys!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe all those horseshoes hanging over the horse barns brought us this good luck on Friday the 13th.

Posted by Betty..Blessed be the name of the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Holy is He!!

Thank you Daddy God for such a wonderful gift of keeping Cavel closed. Daddy God, we are so grateful. Please bring an end to the transportation of our horses too. Please bring this pass swiftly Daddy God. The horses are crying out to you and so are we. We love you Daddy. Bring Vivi out in the open Daddy. Please show us where she is. Bring her home along with all we have brought to your throne. Let your glory flow Daddy God.Bless Kathy over and over again and all who have helped in this great endeavor. May her birthday be sweet and very happy. Lead us, guide us, teach us, and protect us Daddy, as we go about doing your will on this earth. Help us all to make a major impact. We adore you beloved Daddy God. Thank you for loving us Jesus, before we knew you. You are our awesome family of love, grace, mercy and tenderness. Hold us and all of your creatures in your precious care this day and always. We praise you!!! In Jesus's name
