Talk about getting bogged down: Blue-green algae has been the cause of one dog death in Michigan, the Whole Dog Journal reports. Such toxic algae blooms can occur in fresh water at this time of year, so avoid swimming your dogs in any bodies of standing or stagnant water that have a green or blue-green cast.

After reading the article on this dog's death, it should be noted that he had the dogs out in 90 degree weather for 1 1/2 hours.. (too long for my pups) and that they were playing in the pond.
The dog must have swallowed an awful lot of water/alge/prokaryotes over this time.
I would say it was more of the dog owners fault and that a little exposure to this blue-green will not hurt them.

It wasn't the dog owners fault! I think you should think before you open your mouth. Why would the people he called (the DNR) tell him to keep it quiet? What do you think? And it doesn't take a lot of that algae to make a dog sick. You know a dogs stomach will only hold so much so what are you talking about a lot of water? You don't even know what you are talking about! If he knew that letting his dogs go into that water would have caused his little girl to die I know he wouldn't have let her go in. Isn't this the time of year when everyone goes swimming when its hot? When would you go swimming? in the winter... 90 degrees is when most people get into the water to cool off and that where he had his dogs.
