Just about 15 months after Vivi was carelessly lost while in the care of Delta Airlines, unfortunately, there is no new news to report on the search for Vivi. We have had no calls of confirmed sightings of Vivi in months now. We pray that someone has her and if they do, that they would be kind enough to let someone know, even if anonymously, in the form of a current photo. We just want to know that Vivi is okay.
There are still many fliers up in the various neighborhoods and the Vivi Team does go out now and again to replenish them.
So many good things have come about because of what happened to Vivi. Good people throughout the country are helping to save other animals' lives. Whether it be through petitions, networking, donations, forwarding information, prayers, requests for help with lost, injured or suffering animals as well as trying to help a special little girl, Madison, by reaching out to the Extreme Home Makeover crew to rebuild a home, thus giving her the care, therapy and treatments needed at home to assist her family and help Madison thrive and continue to improve. http://www.gopetition.com/online/12112.html
For all of these GOOD things being done, we say, “Thank you Vivi” and thanks to all of you who are out there making a difference.
A group of Vivi volunteers, and others offering to help, have come together to pursue the airline safety issues that are needed to be put in place, and/or enforce those requirements that are already in place, for transporting pets via the airlines. We are calling this the “Vivi Crusade.”
There is much needed information to be gathered, in order to present any changes that need to be made, whether it is amending a bill or creating a new one.
We are putting a web site together so that people can stay up to date on what the Vivi Crusade group is doing and what is needed. We are in immediate need of a web host for this web site and are hoping that someone may know of a service that would donate the web-hosting or provide a discount to do so as we are in need of funding to get this new initiative going. I contacted Barbara Listenik who, through the unfortunate incident with Delta losing her dog Boris back in 1996, was the driving force behind the Safe Air Travel for Animals Act, also known as the Boris Bill. Barbara and a few other folks that helped get the Boris Bill passed have offered to join the Vivi Crusade. With Barbara’s guidance, who has “been there-done that,” and that of Sue Weiss of the Long Island Coalition of Dog Fanciers, the Vivi Crusade is moving in the right direction.
We’ve come to find that through the “Boris Bill”, training information MUST be given to all airline employees in the safe handling of all pets in their care. We do not know if this is being done. If anyone can provide us with training material that is being used to train airline employees and handlers, please forward the information to me.
We have put together a “Vivi Crusade Questionnaire” which asks for information of incidents that travelers have had transporting their pets via the airlines, even if the incident was not reported.
It has also come to our attention, that many more incidents of pets being lost somewhere within the airlines/airports, are NOT being reported as the pet may have been found in another airport or another part of the airport, hours later. These poor lost pets somehow get re-routed onto other flights, or are never listed as being on ANY flight to begin with. There is no logged info about these pets making it a nightmare for them to be tracked when lost. Only after hours of worry for the owners and some scrambling of airline employees, is the animal found and reunited with the owner with NO explanation what so ever from the airlines on what happened to the animal. It seems that since the animal has been found, no report is written up and it does not get recorded as a lost pet, which is exactly what it was for that period of time. With no reporting of the temporarily lost animal, it does not get reported to the Consumer Protection Division of the Department of Transportation, which the airlines are required to do, under the Safe Travel for Animals Act. These complaints are then published in its Air Travel Consumer Report http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/ The complaints list the ‘Description of the Incident’, the ‘Description of Cause of the Incident’ and the ‘Description of Any Corrective Action’ taken by the airlines. With these lost and found incidents not being reported, the airline is not held responsible to have any corrective actions put into place. So this can happen to another animal at any time.
We know for a fact that incidents, such as these, go unreported by the airlines if they are not formally reported by the animal’s owner. Take the story of Faith, the two legged dog, that was lost for almost 10 hours while in American Airlines care this past February, this incident was never listed with the Department of Transportation. This is only one of the many we have heard of, with this type of “lost” incident happening, but unless there is some type of reporting/record of the incident, we don not have a leg to stand on and cannot get the changes made. This is why the gathering of information with the Vivi Crusade Questionnaire is so very important.
Another finding we've come across with these lost animals, as you can see from the Air Consumer Reports, is that the airlines claim the crates being used to transport the animal seem to be the cause of the animals getting lost. Whether it is a faulty crate door mechanism or the crate not being put together securely. I do believe that this may be the case in some incidences but know that there was nothing wrong with the spring lock door on Vivi's crate when it was handed over to Delta, however, when Vivi's crate was returned days later, the spring mechanism on the door was clearly broken. To me, this faulty crate excuse seems to be an easy out. Having a crate manufacturer that can design a crate better suited to contain an animal, may prove to be very helpful in safely transporting them.

Bonnie - Thank you for this update on what is happening. I pray someone will let us know if they have Vivi so we will know she is safe.
One thing I have wondered about is the HomeAgain tag I have seen advertised lately through your vet. I realize we cannot put this tag on Vivi at this point, but I have wondered if by listing her with this service by the purchase of this through a vet (or maybe this company would even donate this service to help Vivi) we could utilize the notification features they have to contact all vets, animal rescues, etc. to get the word all over the USA. They also will keep a vet record on your pet and what measures should be taken immediately to help the pet if injured. Possibly this could be linked to her microchip already implanted. Thank you also for the mention of sweet Madison's Petition. We now are at 200 signatures, and the comments written under the View column are so kind and supportive I found tears in my eyes reading them. Thank you all for your help. As I am sure you have figured out, this little girl has become so "very special" to me. She reminds me so much of my own sweet granddaughter, Mackenzie. I look at Madison and my heart breaks from wanting her to come out of this coma so badly. I pray someday she will come out of this coma and be the child her family wants back and loves so badly.
Thank you for all your help for Vivi, Madison, and all the others. I feel we are making some big changes for the good of animals and people through this blog. Bless Vivi's sweet heart, she needs to be the next happy ending.
Kathleen, I have seen the Home-Again Tag commercials also and wish Vivi had it. You have a good idea about purchasing the service available with it. Many more vets and shelters would have her info. all over. It's something we should consider. Always hoping that Madison will come out of her coma and resume childhood and that Vivi will be in Montana soon with Jill and Rick. Gosh, we need some happy endings. The news has been pretty sad, lately.
The Home Again idea is wonderful Kathleen. I so hope that Vivi is safe somewhere. She is and will be forever a part of my heart and prayers.

The Extreme Makeover is a great idea.. Thye were in my area last year. Doing a House for a police officer who had 2 small boys. The mother had pasted away from Cancer.. I was in shock at how many people come out to help rebuild a dream for some family..

There is a lady that had 11 horses - she dumped them all in a feedlot and the are scheduled to go to slaughter tomorrow - Thursday. the still need $6300 to save these horses - I know that is a lot but there are a lot of people that are hearing this and hopefully donating - any amount, large or small will help. there are many that are pregnant and if not rescued, their babies will never ever take a breath of air.

Madison's signatures are at 239 now. I was up about 2:00 am this morning and checked, so that is about 39 more throughout the night. This is amazing. Thank you all so very much. Please spread the word to others you know, and ask them to also keep the word spreading to their family and friends too.

Gina and Grandma Connie - I am sitting with tears of excitement in my eyes. Thank you for your sweet words to all these wonderful people. They have been there for me through so many things - when my Tinkerbell got sick and I was worried crazy, helping me help 11 little dachshunds in need, helping Madison, praying for Sparky when he was injured, my Mom's breast cancer, now my sister-in-law's breast cancer, my own illnesses, and many more things I'm sure I am forgetting.

Yes Kathleen, the Belgium horses have been saved - with 4 hours to spare. The Colorado feedlot horses have until noon on Friday - we have 5 pregnant mares in that group - their babies need a chance to live and so do their mamas and their buddies - can you believe that their former owner dumped them in the feedlot - like to get hold of her - perhaps I can find out where she lives!!!! Then I give her some NY attitude - (I'll have to fake it) Anyway --- my offer is still on......I'll kiss each and ever one of these 11 plus their new babies BUT we have to save them first.

I am just reading the blog for the first time today. Re: the Home Again microchip, I believe that is the one Vivi does have, -I forget- if not that then it's from the other major microchip company (Avid, I think), so her information is carried in her. Because of this if someone has her eventually we'll know. Me, I still think she's out there.
It's yet another Vivi lesson for us, to microchip our dogs and cats.
Thanks Karen. What I was wondering about was the investigation into asking for the help from the HomeAgain people to keep the information out there in the network all over the US.
They say in their ads and on their website that they have a network set up to immediately notify all vets, shelters, animal rescues, etc. when your dog is missing. I know we had spoken about trying to contact the vets in all areas in case Vivi has been taken out of New York. This seemed like a good way to do this.
I feel certain they could use the microchip info with their system as her identification. I feel they might even offer their help with the publicity surrounding the search for our Vivi.
Unfortunately there's still a large number of vets who don't have any microchip scanner
Even if all vets don't have the scanner this could still reach so many more of them than if we tried to contact all by ourselves. Vivi's publicity and her distinctive breed would jog their memory and remind them to scan if a whippet came in. If someone protested, it could be the clue. If the dog's really yours, what do you care if the vet scans. I have Piper's checked regularly to make sure it's OK and hasn't moved.

Thanks Audrey! I highly recommend emailing this group. You are not committed, but there may just be a chance that one day you will be going somewhere and a dog may need a ride. This group was instrumental in getting our pups here from Georgia. They went above and beyond and sincerely enjoyed every minute! This is an awesome group!
