More recalls are in the offing. Reuters reports:

San Francisco-based Wilbur-Ellis said pet food makers using the protein should issue a recall but declined to name the manufacturers, although two have already issued recalls.
“It’s really the responsibility of the FDA and the manufacturers to take the next step,” John Thatcher, chief executive officer for Wilbur-Ellis, told Reuters.
Natural Balance Pet Foods, has recalled its venison-flavored dog and cat foods after reports of vomiting and kidney problems. Tests have confirmed melamine in the products, which contain the rice protein, the FDA said.
The Blue Buffalo Co. on Thursday recalled its Spa Select Kitten dry food labeled as best used by March 7, 2008.>>

The company said yesterday tests showed some of its products contained corn gluten contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical. The gluten was imported from China and the pet food made in South Africa from March 8 to April 11 under the Vets Choice and Royal Canin brands.>>
Bloomberg also notes that the melamine scandals have hit pork exports, too:

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...I changed dog foods and I'm wondering why..I fed both of my dog Nutro Natural Choice and I can't seem to find out if they are on the bad list. Some links hint that the Natural Choice, Nutro, is on the list, I wish I could find a current list.
I changed to Natural Balance and now I'm worried about that brand. Does anyone know if Nutro Natural Choice DRY Lamb and rice is on the list...My dogs are hungry, I'm disgusted and worried. Ackkk!

Ruby, I had been feeding Nutro dry to my Whippets too... i just switched to be extra careful. No Nutro dry has been on any recall lists that i've seen, only the can food.

I am the Woman that works in a pet supply store.We have not pulled any Nutro dry off of the shelfs.The only Nutro we pulled was the Nutro (Wet) chunks in Gravy.I continue to feed Nutro senior to my old girl.
Believe me this is a major concern to us that work in the pet supply business.Like someone said "you are damned if you do and damned if you don't".
Everyone BTW where I work feeds Nutro dry.I Pray that all animals(furry kind)survive and live a long healty life.God Bless All.

Thinking of Vivi today on her 5th birthday and hope she will be reunited with Jill and Rick very soon. They, along with Beau and Paul, have been on my mind today. I hope I never have to experience the heartache of a pet missing this long. After this draining week, we could all use a miracle.

Today at the agility trial we raised over $500 at a sort of homemade dog treat bake sale, for Emily Hilscher's "in lieu of flowers" charity (http://www.rawldogs.org/ the excellent local no kill shelter.) She was our local girl, worked in the gallery where I show my work during highschool and was planning to be a vet. She was the first to die in the dorm at Virginia Tech. I thought it was cool that her family asked for that.
Just wanted to report about her. I am not intending to beg for money because I know there are so many causes with needy animals. But I want to pass that on in her memory.
That was really nice Karen. I remember you talking about her. Nice thought on the part of the parents.

Karen, what a wonderful tribute to Emily that a charity was set up for this shelter in her honor. The contributions from the folks at your agility trials will go a long way in caring for the homeless dogs and cats at the shelter. You knew Emily and must have felt a terrible horror and shock learning of her death. How sad today must have been for you.

Thanks. I can only say I was acquainted with Emily but I am very good friends with those who were close to her and her parents and sister and went down to Roanoke last week to be with them. It's just an example of the network that connects people and how many people are affected by the untimely, needless loss of one.
