Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Over the past several days, Menu Foods continued a detailed analysis of production records at its Emporia, Kansas, plant as part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s ongoing investigation of this adulterated wheat gluten.
As a result of this work, one additional item has been added to the recall list and is shown below. Two additional production dates of eight varieties of pet food have been added to the recall list. These eight varieties of pet food had previously been withdrawn from the market and should already be off the retailer shelves. An updated list of the recalled products, including this addition, is available at http://www.menufoods.com.

I just got off the phone with my vet - not feeling a real warm fuzzy feeling feeding Natural Balance any more - he suggested I take my dogs off NB and switch to Eagle Pack - a brand he feeds his dogs. I checked out their website, www.eaglepack.com and am thinking about switching to their holistic line as their regular line has corn in it which to me is a waste of my money. At this point, I'm afraid to even feed my dogs!!! Thought I would pass that on - guess I'll be switching the new kitties over too
From what I understand Eagle Pack canned food is packed by Menufoods.

I use Merrick canned foods and Fromm dry food. So far so good.
Since the recall I've switched to Canidae dry. I know people using it and it's always listed in the top 10 in whole dog journal, and I'd been meaning to try it for along time. They use human grade chicken and my doggies are doing great on it so far.

Canidae is very highly rated by Whole Dog Journal, Ivve bought many Canidae and Felidae cans...months agowhen I opened one of the cans (don't remember if it was the dog or cat food, I found a little white thing in it about 1/4 inch log and it MOVED. Like a tiny worm, How it survived the cooking I don't know. I wonder why Canidae is significantly less expensive than some of the others.
Wellness said they use a Menu plant (other than the one involved in the recall) for "some' of their wet foods but they claim that their own reecipe is used and that the machinery is cleaned before each run
Still I don't feel like giving $ to Menufoods in any way since it seems that they knew there was something wrong with the food but kept selling it.
Their CEO who sold stock right before the recall may be going to prison eventually for that

Pet-food recall continues to widen
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Royal Canin USA said on Friday it was voluntarily recalling all of its dry pet food products containing rice protein concentrate after it found a melamine derivative in some products.
Melamine is an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertilizers.
The announcement is the latest in a widening recall of dog and cat food products across the United States since mid-March. More than 100 brands of pet food have been recalled after reports of cases of pets developing kidney failure.
The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration has received more than 14,000 reports of pet illnesses so far. Officials have confirmed just 16 deaths but believe the actual number could be higher.
Royal Canin said it had not confirmed cases of illness in pets due to its products.
"We are taking this proactive stance to avoid any confusion for our customers about which Royal Canin USA products are safe and which products may be affected," the company said in a statement.
The company will also no longer use Chinese suppliers for any of its vegetable proteins, it said.

List of Toxins Found in Pets Grows Longer, Pigs Fed Toxins

If it wasn’t confusing enough, three more toxins were found in the urine and kidneys of sick pets.
Researchers in at least three labs found cyanuric acid, amilorine and amiloride — all by-products of melamine — in the crystals of animals’ urine, tissues and kidneys…
Finding cyanuric acid is the more significant finding, Hoff, Goldstein and Mullaney said, although they are not yet certain how toxic it is to animals.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web site said, “When ingested (by humans) in large amounts, the substance may have effects on the kidneys, resulting in tissue lesions.”
Also, pigs that ate contaminated rice protein were slaughtered and sold before the government could quarantine them. It is not clear whether the meat made it into consumers’ hands. The pigs ate salvaged pet food from Diamond Pet Foods.
Researchers also ruled out aminopterin, previously announced by NY state. No explanation is given as to how this decision was made.
My letter to the White Plains judge has just gone out in the mail. Hopefully seeing out of town pleas for Duke will show the Court the widespread sentiment for Duke's release.
