Lots of missing Fidos this morning. Here goes:
First, an email from English setter rescue about PETE:
<<A newly adopted English setter from Setter Rescue is loose on Long Island. He was recently adopted from Above & Beyond English Setter rescue, and just finished his long transport from Tennessee to Stony Brook this past Saturday. His name is Pete, and he's 2.5 years old. Apparently, Tuesday afternoon he scooted out the front door of his new home in Stony Brook when it was opened.
Pete was extremely fearful to begin with, and after his long transport and new home he's even more of a flight risk. He's never bitten, but might
defecate when approached. Since he's frightened and not at all familiar with
his new Stony Brook area, we fear he might be running far and wide.
He has no ID or collar on him, and he was not chipped.
Please contact us if hear of any information or he is turned into your shelter. We will retrieve him immediately.

HERO is a 14-month-old male Rottweiler who escaped from a friend's house on April 20 in the Capital Heights, Maryland area. A policeman fed him potato chips for a half-hour while waiting in vain for animal control to arrive ... Hero left and is still on the lam.

Out on the other coast is THOR, a 10-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback whose family was camping this weekend at KOA Santa Cruz. Early Saturday morning, Thor experienced a seizure of some sort, and, when his family let him out of the cabin to orient himself, he bolted.
His family searched the campsite for two hours that evening, all day Saturday and Sunday morning, to no avail. "We actually came close to him two or three times in the two hours after he ran away but he looked at us as if he didn't know us and bolted the opposite directions," his owner writes in an email.
Thor was not wearing his collar and tags. The family has posted "lost dog" signs within a three-mile radius of the campsite, have notified local authorities, and is checking with animal services regularly. So far, nothing.
Thor has lots of fatty tissue bumps on his body, and is lean and trim (just over 80 pounds).

HAPPY ENDING: The van full of St. Bernard's stolen from the Red Lion Hotel Parking Lot in Sacramento, Calif., has been recovered, along with its precious cargo. "It was totally stripped but the dogs are all o.k. ," says a cross-posted email we received. "Thank you everyone who was on the lookout!"

I could really use some more Happy Ending stories.
Me too Pam..I've been bummed about all the sad happenings! At least the Saints, not far from where I live were recovered.
Hi Ruby - I'm a sucker for floppy-eared dogs with sad eyes so Pete's story was making me feel a little bummed out when I read it.
PAM, I'm a sucker for dogs in general..Our paper today had an article about a sweet Pitbull who had a seizure and bit her owner. Animal control was called and the results were horrible...Allie ended up being put down and all because the jerks/oxymoron didn't know how to handle the case and not only did they put a wire noose around her neck, but they tasered her..The results of the horrible ordeal were terrible injuries to the dogs mouth and she had to be put to sleep. The owners had her since she was 8 weeks old.
for the record: My Whippet bit a vet tech when she was having seizures, so the name PIT isn't the problem, it was the seizure......I'm sick about it and all the lost and abused dogs.......Its a sad thing!
Thanks Ruby...Now you're really bringing down into the pits (just kidding). I guess I should have finished my thoughts above. I was also feeling frustrated because Hero was so close to being caught and then got away and poor Thor is probably confused out of his wits. Then your story about the pitbull was also a terrible incident. Somebody throw me a lifeline, I think I'm sinking in all of these sad stories...glub...glub...
It is a sad thing. So much abuse and ignorant people. We need some really, really good news to cheer everyone up. We had a bobcat in our back yard last night and I woke my husband up to help. He was half asleep and shot at it and missed. I hate to say this but I'm glad he just scared it away but I really don't want it coming back and harming my dogs.
Kay, you must live out in the country. In our area, we have to worry about eagles taking off with cats and small dogs.
I also have hawks that I have to watch for as I have a 2 lb chihuahua and when I take her out I am almost tripping on her to stay right by her side.
My husband killed a 4 foot rattle snake a couple of weeks ago so I put out moth balls. Someone told me that would help with snakes. I hope they are right.
Wow - rattlers can get to be fairly good size. I'm glad they don't reside in my area. Hey, maybe I finally figured out why I live where it is so cold...I don't have to deal with rattlesnakes. Kay, good luck with keeping your baby safe.
Kay,
You sound like you live in my area...Bob cats, snakes, fox, big hawks that almost took a friends little Min Pin. The doggie had claw marks on her tummy.....
Moth balls for rattlers? I've never heard of that ,but sounds good.
I just bought what was called a Hearth Gate that people sometimes use around open fireplaces and free standing wood burning stoves.I use it in the entry way of my house, about 8 feet from the front door, to keep the dogs from going to the front door, and perhaps sneaking out. My space to cover was 85 inches and i still have a secton left over. It's saved me worrying about the dogs sneaking out the door, which happend a few times with the male! If my female got out, I'm sure she'd meet Vivi in NY...She wouldn't come to anyone, she'd be frightened to death.
http://baby-safety-products.babycatalog.com/safety-g
ates-and-rails-banisters/hearth-gate-07070
They are a bit pricey, but well worth not having to worry about your dogs getting out. They also make baby gates etc..I just noticed the one I bought is on sale for $159. I paid $199 plus tax making it about $224. Its well worth the money.
So many lost and confused babies out there. May they all have happy endings very soon. The ignorance and cruelty of people make me sick. What great role models for young children. At least the policeman tried to keep Hero in one place but where was Animal Control and why didn't they call if they were delayed? I hope there's good news soon for all our sakes.
I once adopted a dog because I saw two puppies in the wooded median of I-95. I pulled over at the exit which was right there and asked the local shelter to come save them. They said something like "we can't come until Monday". Very helpful. So I got one of them myself, the older one safely crossed back and ran very fast into the area he no doubt came from. The little puppy he was with came to me. Rudy, my golden retriever.
They're here!!

Four weeks tomorrow, but the Georgia dogs the NY girls sponsored are finally here!
Sully - for Darlene's husband (his NYFD name) and Lacy (for Rosa).
Sully Gully Jill, didcha forget? Large Marge needs a friend... (0:
I'm sorry but I don't remember these puppies. What's the story behind them? They are cute and have such nice little round bellies.
Any news on the kitty, Spit McGee? He had a vets appointment and I'd love to know how it went. I'm still lighting candles for him...
Don't forget Vivi, Contessa, Bowdee, B+, Banjo,
and DUKE...
Pam - every morning a group called Save Georgia Dogs sends an email with pictures and descriptions of the dogs in 3 shelters who are going to be put down without a rescue commitment by 4:30 that day.
The family who had the mother of these pups just dumped them at the shelter. We were originally told they were 8 weeks old. No other rescue had stepped up by 4 pm, for these puppies, so with the Weenie Crew's support, our rescue committed to the dogs. It was quite an ordeal - not great help in finding foster for them in Georgia, then one got sick and had to be on IVs - at that time we learned they were only about 2 1/2 weeks old when they were dumped at the shelter. He got out of the hospital, went back to foster, then got sick again, at which point I was fed up with the foster care and had them all boarded at the vet. The sickest little boy didn't make it. :(
For the past two weeks I've been trying to find a way to get them up to our rescue, but the transportation has been a nightmare. The one paid transport Save Georgia Dogs gave me was very uncooperative and his prices kept changing, then he just wouldn't respond. So - I got in touch with a woman who heads the volunteer transport. She got a friend to pick them up from the vet and foster them until we could arrange transport. On Friday I was speaking with a friend who mentioned that a co-worker's husband was in Atlanta visiting his son. I contacted him, and he brought them home yesterday. 12 hours!
Never could have happened without those wonderful NY girls!!
CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE
I'm trying to help find a lost greyhound here in Bakersfield. His name is Ace and he's so adorable. He's been missing for two weeks and only one sighting since the day he got out. If you can help me fax or mail fyers I would appreciate it very much. You can email me if you would like to help.
Wow, I think I vaguely recall the story about the puppies. Great job, NY crew!!
Thank you to all who have hellped with the calls, faxes adna emails regarding the passage of the anti-slaughter bills. Here is the latest from the Barbaro Anti Slaughter group:
Anti Horse Slaughter Strategy
We would like to take a moment to welcome all those who have recently joined us in our fight to end horse slaughter and give you a little update on where we currently stand.
As you know, on Wednesday, April 25, S311 was voted on and passed in the Senate Commerce Committee. This means it is now released and can be put on the senate calendar for a full vote. While this is WONDERFUL news, our fight is far from over.
We still must get HR503 out of the House Committees. And we still have to get the leadership to put S311 on the calendar. The only way to assure this is by getting more co-sponsors in both the Senate and the House. The more support, the better our chance for moving this forward.
For this reason, we have been asked to keep contacting any of our representatives that are not yet on board. Please remember to NOT place calls to those that are already co-sponsors.
We got a tremendous amount of publicity this past weekend and will continue to get more as the Triple Crown proceeds. And all of it is GOOD publicity. However, it is important to remember that our opponents have not become complacent and they have not given up. They continue to make their voices heard and we must be louder.
Many of you are working with other groups also. While all the strategies are good, our success has come by following the directives that are given to us. Our contacts in Washington have asked us to stay focused on those directives.
For those of you are members of the state groups, please go back to Stephanie's original strategy. It has proven to be very successful and has gotten very good results.
Alex has posted links on the anti slaughter site for your convenience. You can easily access both co-sponsor lists and more information about the state groups.
The momentum is with us ... and never forget, WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE! Make those calls and send those faxes for him and all the horses.
If you think one person won't make a difference, you're WRONG!!

FDA has admitted today that 4150 pets have died from the contaminated pet food. They break it down to 1,950 cats and 2,200 dogs. This is a far cry from the 16 pets they were saying died. Finally, they are changing their numbers. However, other sources claim the number is much higher.
Margot - This is just heartbreaking. So many useless deaths and so many people losing their fur babies they love so much. Needless to say the high vet bills people have suffered trying to save their babies.
I so hope our country will learn a BIG lesson from all of this. I doubt it though. Greed seems to always rule - even at the cost of so much pain and misery to others.
God bless all of these babies and their owners who are hurting so much. That Rainbow Bridge must be getting pretty crowded after all of these passing.
KATHLEEN: You are 100% right. It all boils down to M-O-N-E-Y and Greed. Until the pet food companies clean up their act I will never buy another bag of dog food. Fortunately my Bedlington friends, many of whom have home cooked for years, have helped me learn to home cook for Harry. I realize not every one has the time to do that but if there is enough interest I would be happy to share what has to go into a nutritionally complete diet. Unfortunately, this diet does not apply to cats , as their needs are different.
Margot - I would love to hear about the home cooked food you are preparing for Harry. Tinkerbell shares my dinner each night with me, so she does not eat a lot of dog food. I have been using Purina. Don't know where I will be if they find the stuff in Purina too.
Thanks.
I just saw the news, Pacific time and it said, out of 750 products produced by China, 350 were positive for Melamine..They are putting a plastic source in our food an our pets food..and they don't seem to care. Its all about money. I'm sick about it. The USA FDA needs to get their acts together.....
Melamine used as a filler and they say, a source of protein. What a crock!

3 Million Contaminated Chickens Sold, Hundreds of Plants May Have Gotten Tainted Ingredients
May 1st, 2007
Key points from the FDA press conference:
* 2.5 to 3 million chickens have been fed the tainted pet food and already sold to the public.
* “Hundreds” of plants could have received tainted vegetable protein from China.
* Due to “low risk”, chicken and pork not recalled. Yet FDA says they lack toxicity data on melamine.
* Refuses to name any more company names.
Live blog results of FDA press conference at Pet Connection.
Also, Reps. Dingell and Stupak dispatched congressional investigators to west coast ports to look into contamination (most likely Long Beach, CA).
Boy, do I feel much better now that the FDA and USDA have been made God (NOT!!!!!!!!!!!). Even though they have no statistics relating to melamine and what it can or can not do to animals & humans, the FDA is stating that humans do not need to be worried. I can only say, this is one very worried human.
OK Team Vivi - I really need your help - the horses need your help ---- Cavel has been granted a stay and is REOPENING - our horses are already heading there for slaughter.
Please go to http://forums.prospero.com/timwoolley/messages/?msg=8564 and see who to call to stop this. The different links won't post here so it is easier to just go to the direct forum page.
Please PLEASE take a few moments and call.
I'm supposed to be picking up a new prescription of heartworm medicine for my dogs later this month. I have used the chewable kind in the past. Does anybody know if this would have been possibly contaminated as well?
Pam - I asked my vet that same question when I reordered mine last week - told him I had hear rumors that they were going to be listed - he said he has not heard anything at all about the heartworm meds being contaminated and then gave me his look and told me to not to start panicking - I gave him his look right back and told him I wasn't planicking - just making sure. He knows how I get!!!
Thanks Kathy! I'll do some questioning as well when I go in. This is really getting nerve-wracking having to worry about possible contamination.
I was asked if only those from Illinois can call regarding the sudden re-opening of the Cavel plant ----- EVERYONE from EVERYWHERE PLEASE PLEASE call - these are the nations horses and Cavel is the only plant in our nation to be re-opened so it is a national right to call.
NOTE: IF THE SENATE AND COMMITTEE OFFICES ASKS IF YOU ARE AN ILLINOIS RESIDENT (AND YOU ARE NOT), PLEASE RESPOND THAT THIS IS A *NATIONAL* ISSUE, AS THEIR STATE HAS THE *ONLY* HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT OPERATING IN OUR COUNTRY.
(meaning that ALL of our U.S. horses - purchased at auction, stolen, etc - are being shipped to THEIR plant).
Margot,
Can you email me your recipes for homecooked dog food? I try to do it, but I know I'm not giving them the vitamins, etc. they need.
If you need my email address, please let me know.
Thanks

This is from cnn.com. PIT BULLS ARE HORRIBLE ANIMALS. HERE IS TYPICAL PIT BULL BEHAVIOR. BUT OF COURSE DUKE COULDN'T POSSIBLY BEHAVE LIKE THIS:
Tiny terrier saved kids from pit bulls
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.
George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.
"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.
"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."
One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.
"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."
But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.
South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.
In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.
Charly,
Why is it you only post gross things? Does anything good ever happen in your miserable life? Do you have something against Pits? I coulda sworn you give that impression. I realize you KNOW that ALL Pitbulls are bad and I hope your fluffy stuffy dog, bites you on the lip.
Pam and Kathy thise was posted under one of the other topics -
We own a blue heeler/border collie mix. Two nights ago we gave her Frontline Plus. Ever since she has been incredibly thirsty, showing signs of tremor and is scary lethargic. We had given this before but I don't recall there being a problem. I wonder if this is somehow related. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow and am glad that this information in online.
Posted by: Shari | May 02, 2007 at 04:36 AM
Shari, did you give her a chewable kind. If you did, I have been hearing that some of the chewable heartworm medicines are showing the same symptoms in pets as those who ate the tainted pet food. I would discuss this with your vet and have a blood panel done.
Posted by: Meri-Lou | May 02, 2007 at 10:26 AM
Some collies and Border collies are very, very sensitive to heartworm treatments especially Ivermectin, and pyrethrin and other flea treatments- and like Meri-lou said it can cause liver damage and that is what the tainted dog food is causing, in part. Get your dog to the vet today.
Posted by: Karen | May 02, 2007 at 10:56 AM
Charly you are a piece of work, and your point is????
Have you met Duke? I have, have you read the transcripts from the court? I have. I have to laugh because if you knew what we did you would stop posting all this info on dangerous pits. Like I asked once before what has one done to you personally? still waiting for your answer, but I guess that day will never come and what kind of animal do you own. You probaby have an ant farm.
Pam my dog is going to the vet soon to get her heartworm refill, she gets the interceptor tablets, should I be worried about this also? Guess what tonight is my dear, unless I forget.
Hi Debbie - DO NOT FORGET WHAT NIGHT IT IS! Can't wait! I might be e-mailing you tomorrow to rehash the latest...Stay tuned.:)
Pam I may get you first, 3 episodes left and they better have one hell of a season ender. I think someone is going to die and I heard it may be Jack.
Well...we'll have to wait and see won't we? I'd love a good season ending cliffhanger!!
PAM: I spoke to Mariel a while ago (the makers of once a month chewable heartworm) and they assured me there is no wheat gluten or rice protein in it. They did say that the treats they gave the vets had WG and RP in it. I assume the Vets threw them out.Frankly at this point I don't know who to believe and I don't trust anyone.
KATHLEEN & BARBARA : I will post the home cooked recipe a little later as it's sort of long and I want it to be right.
So would I, wish it was still 9 instead of 10, I will be sending you an email tomorrow so we can compare notes.
Thanks for the info Margot. I might be interested in that recipe as well so please do post it when you can.
Debbie - I might have to take notes tonight so I don't forget anything. Teehee.

HOME COOKED DOG RECIPES: This is not for cats as their requirements are different. Here are 2 recipes I receieved from long time home cookers. The first is nutritionally complete and the 2nd is good for short term or to mix with a small amount of kibble for the calcium:
#1 Pressure cook a whole chicken in a way that the bones will mash up. About 4 hrs but keep checking after an hour to make sure there's enough water in the cooker and that the bones are very soft. Can add more water if necessary. If some leg bones don't soften just throw them out. Dogs on a diet without bone can after a few years suffer with seizures. Then put everything in a processor and make mush. Cook up separately:
Brown Rice, String beans, or Broccoli or any green veg and some mashed sweet potato Do not use corn.Depending on size of dog give 1c. rice, 1/4 c. veg,1/3 c. chicken, 1 tablespoon cottage cheese 1/2 childs multi vitamin. You can also use lean ground beef but not as often as you don't get the bone.
Once a week I fix mac and cheese. For one package you will need to add after cooked one can drained tuna. Divide into 3 or 4 meals and freeze the rest. Start him gradually on all this food
#2 much easier but not as complete:
Lean ground turkey or lean hamburg plus all the stuff above including the child's Vitamin. Home cooking is not easy but it's better than the alternative at this point.
lost, LOST, lost, LOST LOST LOST and besides that, LOST and then again, LOST, therefore:LOST and so on and so LOST and so on. I think I'm LOST, but LOST is good.

MARGOT: I have the recipe you sent to me, want me to send it to whoever or post it? I can copy and paste it!
Rooby,Roooby thanks. I posted the first one which is a newer one so people can see how necessary the calcium is if your feeding home cooked long term.It is a lot of work and the other one is also good but it's not a forever diet. I'm pooped from cooking!!!
I just noticed Margot...sounds good. I'm feeding Nutro and praying a lot!
Rooby mama, my vet called it's clients this week to tell them they had 2 dogs die from kidney failure the past week due to the recalled food, I was there today to ask them again about my dogs food as I was getting a new bag for her and also asked if they heard anything on heartworm pills or frontline, they said they haven't, I also wonder with so much on the news and papers about recalled food how did the owners not know about the tainted food. I feel bad that we had 2 pass from my vet after so many weeks later. Why wasn't all this contaminated stuff off the shelves!!!!! if it was 2 lives could have been saved. It's disgusting.
Debbie, I've read that some stores still have the contaminated foods on their shelves..Pure carelessness I think. I still worry about the food my guys are eating, but so far, so good. The company swore to me, hah, they had no tainted food....
20 mins. til LOST is on I think.......maybe
Heads up! Stolen Visla in NJ, a stolen dog can turn up anywhere, so please keep your eyes out for this dog:
PLEASE DONT ERASE THIS WITHOUT READING MY STORY.
I'M WRITING TO EVERYONE HOPING THAT I INFORM AS MANY PEOPLE AS I POSSIBLY CAN HOPING SOMEONE MIGHT SEE MY STOLEN DOG, SEVEN.
He was last seen at 7am in Springfield, NJ. He was STOLEN from my deck while we were at work. He's a 3 year old Vizsla, about 50 lbs and a golden orange/red color. He is neutered. He is very friendly and listens when you call out his name or ask him if he "wants food."
Has anyone seen him or knows of a new pet in
the neighborhood. HE IS MICROCHIPPED, so if you suspect you have seen "Seven" call the police immediately. Please write down as much
information as possible about the area, including description of individual, license plate of vehicle, address of individual, etc. Any
information is good information for the recovery of my dog.
Please E-MAIL this to everyone you know. Hopefully this letter circulates throughout the internet and someone can lead us to his recovery.

This is terrible, why did he leave his dog out when no one was home. When are people going to do understand that it doesn't matter if they are microchipped if you leave them out for someone to steal.
Dear Friends,
The Horse is a very pro-horse slaughter magazine. On their home page is a survey regarding the issue. Please be sure to vote "I oppose slaughter in every circumstance."
http://www.thehorse.com/ (survey is on bottom left side of screen).
Please crosspost this and ask everyone you know to vote "I oppose slaughter in every circumstance."
Thanks everyone!!
Kathy, do you have to log in to be able to vote? I do not see anywhere on the front page where we can vote. Am I missing something?
PLEASE CALL ON THE HORSE SLAUGHTER ISSUE. If you think the calls don't matter, read this:
Excerpt from The Church of Barbaro...
"They've turned their sights on federal horse slaughter laws, burning up the phone lines. Their fervor can be mistaken for the handiwork of professional political operatives. One congressional aide, after yet another call, finally asked: Who is funding you? Who is organizing you? Who are you people?
"We're just Fans of Barbaro," the caller answered."
Please join your state group today-
We are making a difference, they are hearing us!

YES - please call - I posted the link yesterday as the blog won't let me post all numbers - go to: http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2007/04/anti_horse_slau.php
and read who to call. It only takes you to make a difference between a horses life or death.

Ladies, could I ask you to add another "human" to the prayer list please.
My former sister-in-law, who I absolutely adore and am still best friends with, has breast cancer. Hers seems to be a very aggressive type. They are treating her with chemo and radiation before considering the surgery in hopes of shrinking the tumor. Needless to say, we are all very worried about her. Gayle also works at St. Jude, and the doctors and nurses who know her assure me this will be a very long and hard battle for her. Both her faith will get her through - I feel sure of this.
All of you would love Gayle. We bonded immediately because of our love for animals. She is such a kind and loving person and would be missed by all of us so much. Her daughter is planning on attending vet school and says she will give me plenty of vet bill discounts (I can hardly wait)! Then I can rescue more for sure ....
