With Saint Patrick's Day approaching, the American Kennel Club sends on this recap of breeds originating on the Emerald Isle:
Glen of Imaal Terrier—Glen of Imaal, which is a valley in the Wicklow mountains, is the region in Ireland after which this hardy breed is named. Longer than tall and sporting a double coat of medium length, the “Glen” possesses great strength and conveys the impression of a dog of good substance. This is a working terrier, which must have the agility, freedom of movement and endurance to do the work for which it was developed. Like its Irish counterparts, the Glen is also courageous, and always ready to give chase. When working it is active, agile, silent and intent upon its game. Otherwise, the Glen can be docile and a companion for families with older children. Recognized by the AKC in 2004, the Glen of Imaal is one of the newest AKC breeds.

Irish Setter— Green may be the color of the Irish, but deep mahogany is the color of this four-legged beauty. The Irish Setter was recognized by the AKC in 1878 and is part of the Sporting Group. Irish Setters have rollicking personalities and require a good amount of exercise to fulfill their breed instincts; they are tough and tireless field retrievers. They are also loving companion dogs who enjoy the company of children. It takes about three years for this breed to fully mature into adulthood, so if you’re considering bringing an Irish Setter into your home, you should be prepared for an active, fun-loving dog.

Irish Terrier—This breed will be featured in the upcoming movie “Firehouse Dog,” where it has been cast as a canine hero. Not surprising, considering that Irish Terriers were used to transport messages between troops on the front lines in World War I. Their bravery and spirit make them incomparable pals, and they possess great tenacity. Loyal and friendly, Irish Terriers hardily adapt to any situation, and they are deeply committed to their owners. Irish Terriers served as longtime mascots for the Notre Dame Football team, providing halftime entertainment for adoring crowds. The Irish Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

Irish Water Spaniel—This breed has been referred to as the “Shannon Spaniel,” the “Whip-Tail Spaniel,” and the “Rat-Tail Spaniel.” Distinguishing characteristics are a topknot of long, loose curls, a body covered with a dense, crisply curled liver colored coat, contrasted by a smooth face and a smooth "rat" tail. First recognized in 1878 by the AKC, this ancient breed is a natural water dog. Irish Water Spaniels are devoted to their family and cautious around strangers. They are impressive dogs and possess an endurance quality which makes them equally agile in the water and in the field.

Irish Wolfhound—While Irish literature refers to this ancient breed in many ways, including “Big Dogs of Ireland,” Irish Wolfhounds were documented in Rome in the year 391 A.D., where they were presented to the Roman Counsel as gifts, which “all Rome viewed with wonder.” No wonder-- they are the largest and tallest of the galloping hounds. Males should be a minimum of 32” tall and weigh 120 pounds; females should be a minimum of 30” tall and weigh 105 pounds. This is a swift breed which hunts by sight, and needs an ample, fenced in yard to accommodate its full gallop. As in early times, Irish Wolfhounds possess an extraordinary social temperament, as well as the intelligence to separate friend, family and foe. The Irish Wolfhound is featured on the cover of the current Irish-themed issue of the AKC Gazette. Kerry Blue Terrier—The “Kerry Blue” hails from the Irish county of the same name; he had been pure-bred in that section of Ireland for more than a hundred years. Known for his superior working and hunting skills, the Kerry Blue is used for hunting small game and birds, and for retrieving from land as well as water. Size doesn’t matter, for he is an unsurpassed watch dog and herder of flock. In some instances in England, he has even been used for police work. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1922, and came into the national spotlight when CH. Torums Scarf Michael won best in show at the 2002 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier—A truly Irish breed, the “Wheaten” has a special connection to St. Patrick’s Day, having first appeared in the show ring at the Irish Kennel Club Championship on March 17, 1937. The name of this breed describes the characteristics of the coat—soft, silky, with a gentle wave, and of warm wheaten color. Underneath is a formidable dog that enjoys plenty of exercise every day. Most Wheatens are natural greeters towards people, and extremely alert in their surroundings. They are quick learners and love to travel with their owners. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1973.

Irish Red & White Setter--An up and coming Irish breed in America is the Irish Red & White Setter, which is currently listed in the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS). The FSS records the pedigrees of dogs applying for AKC recognition. This breed is thought to have emerged at the end of the 17th Century in Ireland, and is red and white in color, as opposed to the solid red Irish Setter.

If the garment or item cost less than $150 the label does not have to say what type of fur is used. Think twice before buying anything made of fur - please protect our cats and dogs - they look just like our beloved pets we have at home. They feel the same - they hurt the same way!

If it were pets in the US that where being treated like this, we'd be rioting in the streets - but I see no difference - not when we buy their fur - it's on doll clothes and key chains for heavens sake.

It did happen in the US back when I was a teen. Maybe it has happened before or since in various states, who knows. Look at how certain midwestern states have ordinances that define stray cats as vermin that are allowed to be shot (or worse) on sight.
Anyway back then I read a newspaper article about how it had become "legal" to harvest animal fur from cats and sell it in PA and how much per pelt people were selling it for. I was horrified. I had a subscription to Cat Fancy magazine at the time. I went through all my issues and wrote to every celebrity that was featured in the magazine to inform them and ask for their support. Some replied, some didn't, but I do remember writing to a very high placed ABC television producer who wrote back and promised me that she would take care of it. And lo and behold, eventually I saw in the news that Pennsylvanians were not harvesting cat fur anymore. Of course it was not all her doing, but I am sure she helped. At that young age all I knew to reach out to were celebrities, but I reached out, ferreting out their fan mail and business addresses and writing each letter by hand.
As for the "fake" fur really being animal fur and labelled as fake by mistake (ya sure): this recent revelation pisses me off to no end!!! I can touch things and figure out what is acrylic, etc., but now I am wondering if they have found a way to make real animal fur feel that way.
I never buy real fur doodads at all ... even if they are supposed to be the "more acceptable" stock of rabbit, whatever. I don't care. Although the use of cats and dogs are extra horrifying, I have always found the fur industry disgusting no matter what animal is being killed for its fur. I see a lot of toys in the pet store with fur on them and I wonder to myself if the furry toy mice for cats to play with are made out of cats. Yuck.
As for China, perhaps things will change if people mass boycott them. Look how the boycott of the Krugurand (sp?) propelled S. Africa to end Apartheid so many years ago. The loss of money talks.

As you can see, the Humane Society is working on this. Perhaps you would consider contacting them and ask what you can do to help. There are obviously people who are not aware of this practice; however, in the past few days you have made certain everyone who reads this blog is aware, so by contacting the Humane Society and asking them what their strategy is and whom you can contact on their behalf, you would be more likely to reach those who need to be educated.
Those who live by example and don't over-preach tend to have more credibility than those who take the approach of continually preaching to the same crowd. My father used to say that the more you say the same thing over and over again to the same people, the less likely you are to be taken seriously.
While I am certain we all agree this is a practice that needs to be stopped; in my opinion, you are taking enjoyment that this practice exists as it gives you a needle for this blog. As such, you are losing credibility. The way in which MSNBC reports this, and the article they are using to make people aware of this practice, is much more effective. More people are likely to get involved and do something about it from the MSNBC article than they are when they stumble across this blog in which you have taken every thread as an opportunity to toy with the regular posters.
If you are sincere in your passion for stopping this practice as you have posted on and throughout every thread, could you direct us to other forums where you have brought this to the forefront so that those interested in helping you can participate, or let the blog know what you need help with. Perhaps a list of addresses and phone numbers to contact, or an update on positive milestones reached as Kathy does? Adding something positive inspires more volunteers. When only the negative is spoken, it tends to produce the effect of people sticking their head in the sand and giving up before they even try.
My concern is that when a lurker who doesn't know of this practice comes across this blog, they will see your repetitive statements and the entire issue will lose credibility as the next time they glance at an article which mentions these things, they will think they are already informed and will not even read the article or investigate further. I don't think any one who truly cares wants that to happen.

Denise- What a wonderful St. Patrick's Day post. Friends of mine have a gorgeous Kerry Blue, and others have have the soft coated Wheaton. Both families are very Irish, and the dogs' names reflect it. With two kitties- one "Irish"Mcgee, and one "French" Minou, I enjoy loving up my friends beautiful babies (I'm not going to post names because of all of our stolen show dogs lately.)
A former bishop of ours in Saginaw had a fabulous Irish Wolfhound. He hosted his Catholic school teachers on occasion, and those of us who were dog people loved his wolfhound "Vicar". The bishop and his vicar have both gone to their reward, but there a great memories.

OTIS UPDATE:
Gilbert Mendibles will be sentenced Monday, March 19 at 9 a.m. in court
room 572. If you live in Tucson and are able to get down there, please
wear your greyhound t-shirts. Mendibles has already pled guilty to
animal cruelty. Boston was denied water, food, shelter, and human
kindness. Boston has since gained 35 pounds. At the last hearing (which
I was not present but several greyhound folks were) the prosecutor said
that the court received many letters and emails. =20
Brian McCallister, a friend of Mendibles, has already pled guilty and
been sentenced. Apparently he was left in charge for 2 weeks and during
that time denied Boston of water, food, shelter, and human kindness.
For
2 weeks of not caring for Boston he received 2 weeks of jail time, 3
years probation, $3,000 fine, must attend Gambler Anonymous meetings,
and must register at the casinos and not be allowed to gamble there.=20
On Monday March 26, Wayne Dean will be sentenced. He has been in jail
and also pled guilty to 11 counts of animal cruelty. You may recall
that
this has been going on for almost a year. Otis (a greyhound mix) died
from his abuse. Dean pled guilty to removing Otis=92 tail with a saw,
putting cigarette burns on the dog=92s face, no vet treatment after
injury, biting Otis ear (had teeth marks), withholding food up to 7
days, withholding water up to 7 days, tying him up without access to
food or water. I can=92t my notes regarding the other counts.=20
Unfortunately March 19 is not enough time to get any email to the
courthouse for the Mendibles case but let=92s let them know that Wayne
Dean should get the maximum penalty for his cruel and unusual
punishment.=20

Federal prosecutors said the company and several unnamed high-ranking corporate officers did business with the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. The group is described in court documents as a violent right-wing organization that the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization.
The company also did business with the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, according to prosecutors.
