Korean scientist linked to scandal says he created first female cloned dog
South Korea (AP) — A former collaborator of disgraced South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk claimed Monday that he succeeded in cloning a female dog after last year’s breakthrough of creating the world’s first cloned dog, which was male. “This was a process that must be done to see if a cloned dog has reproduction capabilities,” Lee told The Associated Press. Lee was a key member of Hwang’s research team, whose purported breakthroughs in creating human stem cells through cloning were found to be fake. But the team’s success in cloning the world’s first dog, Snuppy, was confirmed. The paper on cloning the female dogs appears on the Web site of journal Theriogenology. An Afghan hound, named Bona (left), was born on June 18 using cloning technology, said Lee Byeong-chun, a veterinary professor of Seoul National University. Two more of the same breed were born later, he said. DNA tests showed that the three female dogs are clones, he said.
Lee, who had been suspended from his university for three months over the stem cell scandal, was the main scientist in the dog cloning. He has been on trial, along with Hwang and other former team members, on charges of misappropriating research funds. If he gets a prison term, he could lose his job as professor of the top South Korean university.

This picture of all these scientists, etc. standing around this small pen and watching these three pups upsets me. I wonder if they will ever know human companionship and love, or just be "experiments that are observed."
I wish I could be there to hold them and love them myself, instead of seeing them observed or held by a scientist like a "prize in research."
Yes Kathleen, are they going to be like "rats in a maze"? Will they just be studied and observed for their entire lives or will they get to live like dogs should?
Or how many dogs will be put down because no one wants the mutt?
They are playing God - I wish someone could put a stop to it. I understand certain parts that could be used for healing and all but there are plenty of afghan hounds in the world without making cloned ones. How about cloning the River Dolphin that is near extinction if they want to be clone happy.
Very good point, Martha. This is what I have been concerned about for a long time. Go to shelters and see how many purebred dogs are there now.
The poor little mutts are often being overlooked because people adopt the purebreeds. If not adopted, they are rescued often by breed rescues. Then the mutts are left to be euthanized a lot.
Maybe we should promote a bumper sticker that says, "Please love a mutt, adopt one today!"
AMEN!!!
I'm against the cloning...either animals nor humans.
I am also Paula. My belief is that God gives each creature (whether animal or human) a Soul unique and different from any other.
Man may clone the body, but the Soul will never be cloned. As much as I love my Tinkerbell, when she passes away I want her body and her little Soul to fly to Heaven and be with God - I could never love a clone of her the way I love my Tinkerbell. She is unique and special to me.
Good to see you, Kathleen!!
True that I wanted all of my past beloved pets to be with me in Heaven if I ask God to grant me my wish.
I am still waiting, praying and hoping against all the odds that Vivi will be found. Ticket and Bailey will be found, too.
That's right each person or animals are uniques that was why God is the Creator of the Universe.
On Christmas Morning...
I wish:
For every dog
searching trash cans for breakfast,
a filled bowl with his name printed in bright letters.
For every dog
who slept fitfully last night, chained in a frozen yard,
a soft, warm bed
with a person snoring gently nearby.
For every shelter dog,
spending Christmas morning in a soiled run,
a forever home,
filled with sounds and smells of family.
For every "Christmas" puppy
given today,
a tolerant, caring owner
who will lovingly stay with you
as you grow into a real dog.
For every ailing pet,
enough money for your owner
to pay the bills to make you well.
For every lost dog,
a clear, safe road, and well marked path,
to lead you home.
For every old and tired dog,
a warm fire, and a soft bed,
to ease your aches and pains.
and
For every dog at the Bridge,
a moment when you know that you
are remembered today,
missed again,
and loved forever.

Wow Beth
Now let the waterworks flow!!!!!!!!!!
That was beautiful, but it practically killed me.
On January 18, 2007 my 2 Alaskan Malamutes were stolen from my property in Oyster Bay. On the 19th of January our Male Malamute was picked up by the police on Linden blvd and Elmont road. The person who called them reported they saw 2 dogs running around the area. The female was gone by the time the police arrived. A week later our male was returned to the Hempstead animal shelter were I picked him up yesterday. The female (enclosed) is still missing. Our family is devastated over the dogs disappearance.
The 2 dogs are very expensive show dogs that are kept as pets. To help in the return, I have already rented a helicopter and did a grid search of the north shore of 40 squares miles. That was no help being that they were dumped out of a car in element. That was a great deal of money and air sickness to no avail. At that point I contact some Malamute help centers and they suggested a pet detective. That was thousands of dollars for 3 days… no help being they were in Elmont.
With that being said, I am just about out of savings and ideas. She was last reported seen at linden blvd and Elmont road. My family have called all the shelters, vets and schools in the area. We have posted 100’s of flyers around the neighbor hood. Please help find her. I can take out the last $1000 from my retirement fund for the reward.
I cant tell you how this is effecting the kids and her brother (the male). No one is sleeping, none is eating. I am stuck because I have no more answers or money. Anything you can do would help.
thanks
