Missing Show Dog Becomes Urban Legend

NEW YORK -- In the nine months since escaping her travel cage at Kennedy Airport, Vivi the wayward whippet has joined the Central Park coyote, high-rise tiger, Harlem Meer caiman and Molly the fugitive feline in New York's ever-growing pantheon of urban animal legends. She was reported dozens of times, roaming cemeteries with other dogs, or hanging around stores in the borough of Queens, in some cases miles from the tarmac where she disappeared while awaiting a flight home to California on Feb. 15. A day earlier, she had won an Award of Merit at the annual Westminster Kennel Club show.
Owners Jil Walton and Paul Lepiane offered a reward for Vivi's return but have kept a low profile. This week, their lawyer, Joyce Randazzo, said they still hope to recover the sleek, 4-year-old brindle and white whippet, formally known as Champion Bohem C'est la Vie, and the reward, an unspecified amount, still stands.
According to a map published Nov. 18 by The New York Times, Vivi was reported at more than 45 different locations before Aug. 7, when the sightings suddenly stopped, raising fears that she might be dead or left the area.
Richard Gentles, director of administration for Animal Care & Control of New York City, said his organization dispatched rescue teams after "five or six calls" on Vivi in the past several months, but all proved negative.
"For a dog like that to be able to survive this long would be very difficult unless somebody picked it up," Gentles said. "I hope it's true that somebody has the dog and doesn't recognize it. It does happen."
On Wednesday, a volunteer group that devotes itself to finding Vivi reported a new lead: an anonymous caller who had seen her neighbor with a dog that resembled the elusive canine.
"She said he takes it to work every day. We asked if it was a greyhound and she said `No, it's a whippet,'" said Rosa Chile, who answers calls at a toll-free number. "She sounded very legitimate, but she was afraid."
Chile said the area of the purported sighting was being watched, but would not give other details, even where it is -- other than "a few minutes from Kennedy airport."
Bonnie Folz, a professional dog trainer who lives near the airport and has led the search effort for Vivi, said she did not think the dog is still roaming free, and unless she met with misfortune, is in someone's custody.
"I really think somebody has her and that person can't keep the dog under wraps forever," she said.
Folz is conducting an overall review of the Vivi search with Karen Goin, a pet detective who uses her three trained dogs to track missing pets. They recently used a coat once worn by Vivi to check out a report in the Rego Park section of Queens, but the dogs did not find her scent, Folz said.
Recovered or not, Vivi already has joined the colorful list of animals occupying niches as urban legends in Gotham, says Steve Zeitlin, the director of City Lore, a center for the study of such things.
Just two months after Vivi vanished into a wildlife area adjoining JFK, a cat named Molly became trapped inside a wall of a delicatessen in Manhattan's Greenwich Village where she earned her keep as a mouser. It took two weeks to extricate the feline without damaging the landmark building.
Other incidents in recent years involved a full-grown tiger living in a Manhattan apartment, an alligator-like caiman that was recovered from the Harlem Meer pond in Central Park and a truly wily coyote that led police and animal experts on a chase through the park before it was captured.
Zeitlin noted that the frequent reports of Vivi in cemeteries enhances a "ghostly" image, made to order for urban lore.
"I believe the dog has already made it," Zeitlin said. "The sense of an urban legend is something that comes out of daily life or ordinary circumstances and has the stuff of fiction in it, something that is always about to be proved true.
"With this dog, it is always a sighting that can't quite be confirmed."

I don't know if you guys agree with me or not, but as far as I'm concerned...Vivi became a legend the day she escaped from her crate - back on February 15th. I keep praying that a fairytale ending is still forthcoming (for Vivi's and our sakes...).

I agree, we will find Vivi yet, and then we will make them all "believe in ghosts!" Also, I think of legends as people who have been lost - and I am still very convinced in my heart and mind that our Vivi is with us. I do not think God would not be watching over her for us after all these people have prayed so hard for her.
I also find the new post very encouraging! We cannot have prayed for this long and this hard for this little girl and not have been heard!

I just saw it on AOL also. Vivi is even getting more publicity than we hoped for. Just hope it works in her favor.
It really is amazing. Someone has done a great job in the publicity arena...Karin, Bonnie, Denise? Congratulations to the person/people that got it done. Who knows...maybe someone will recognize her and make the phone call we've all been waiting and hoping for.
We could never buy this kind of publicity. They have even made it interactive- vote for whether you think she'll be found. I voted. At the time I did 20,000 other people had as well. Darlene also made a bunch of media calls and I think Brian was involved too. Once it got on the AP I guess all kinds of news organizations picked it up. Marty said it was in the Bakersfield, California paper. I heard it was on the Comcast homepage. This was the take -urban legend- presented by the New York Times and I think they were following Karin on her second day. I don't exactly agree with the POV but they sure did make it sound interesting enough that everyone else wanted to run it.

It's in the paper here in CT, not sure I agree with it as being good. If people think someone has Vivi than sightings of any dog that looks like a whippet may not be called in because people will think "she is caught", JMO. I say this because my own husband said "you didn't tell me someone has the whippet"
I want people to be enocouraged to look for her of course, but many people have
"thought" that she was captured from the first week , the rumor is very widespread
I hope throughout all of New York - thousands of eyes will be looking for Vivi - and now walking with her new/adopted or whatever owner.

It is wonderful that the news is all about Vivi,
I just hope this article does not hurt the search
for her, whether she is in a home with someone
( which i believe she is ) or out and about.

Comments: while at my mother-in-laws house for thanksgivinig dinner last night, i went to the store for soda. when i returned the door was locked an another guest let me in. between my legs and out the door ran pudgy, a two year old pure bred english bulldog. no coller or anything... she is lost and we are all upset. we have posted signs all over the neighborhood, contacted the animal care and control unit, and the local police. any prayers to return her to her owner safely would greatly be apreciated. i have been praying to saint. anthony for a day and half now! thank you.

The urban legend article on Vivi is reprinted in the Indianapolis Star paper today and also on AOL under most popular stories.
The Vivi story was in the Canandaigua Messenger also!!!
I had e-mailed the Dogster blog again to see if anyone responded to my post about Vivi. Joy Ward who runs the blog replied that there was nothing so far but she would put in another post about Vivi soon. I asked for help from local NY people and the out of staters. With all the publicity out there the dogsters might come forth.

It might be hard to discern what exact pattern of markings are on some of the whippets out there. In addition to coats, there are these things called "snugglies" they put on whippets and other non-coated breeds of dogs when they go out or even inside the house and buildings when it is chilly. It covers most of the dog except head and paws.

I wonder where this person works that is suspected of having a whippet that he takes to work every day? Must work alone such as a private contractor or with very few others, or leave the dog in a van or something.
I just looked at the "snugglies", my Whippets would be too embarassed to wear one..haaaaaaaa..Poor doggies, but they do look warm..Silly and warm.

Greyhounds ( which I have one of each) are always
cold, unless of course they sleep under the covers
with me, which they often times do. I actually
have PJ's for my girl which I put on them at night
to try and keep them off the bed. Does not work
very often though, I wake up and they are both
under the covers sound asleep. Hubby is not very
happy with routine in the winter. OH WELL
SueG, I'm in a little, cold in the Winter town, and we had a lot of snow last year. Its in the 40's right now but it will probably freeze tonight. I'm at 1,800 or more feet. I put the Whipper's coats on them when we go outside. I get them at Houndtogs, a gal who makes only coats for sight hounds, I.G.'s, Greys and Whippets..
They have velour, and nylon ones with sort of a lambs wool lining and rain coats. I also bought red quilted satin coats trimmed in fake black fur............poor doors. I got them when some big pet store went out of business, $3.98 so I didn't spend a lot on them. My dogs sleep under the top cover with me..
SueG - Those are cute I think. I bet my Tinkerbell would love one. I wonder if the small would fit her.

Ruby I thought the snugglies were odd and cute too in a way. Just meant to say that there are lots of ways to cover up a whippet! I'm in southern Ohio and snow is iffy here these days. We used to have lots of snow and at times real cold snaps where it will get below zero for quite a spell, but the last 10 years or so we have had very little snow and not much real cold weather. More what I might think Tennesee weather is like.
I currently have malamutes with built in parkas and would like to see more snow and cold. I like the sighthounds a lot. Used to have salukis and a borzoi at one time too. There are whippets in the family and I have a few clients with whippets.
Many people with northern breeds think they have their origins in the sighthounds and came across the land bridge into North America with the first people to come here from Asia. If you look into the masked faces of the afghan, saluki and malamute, you can definitely imagine a similar origin. Northern breeds like malamutes siberians are still highly predatory and nomadic and could survive easily on their own also like the sight hounds. They catch everything that moves, even birds in air. They are not quite so skittish as some of the sighthounds though and will readily approach people.
I have been following the blog because of whippets that I know, and I just love dogs. I have a personal preference for the sighthound and northern breeds though.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and ate too much as I did! My daughter, her fiancee and my grand puppy came for Thanksgiving just for the day as my two old farts don't get along with anything. They had to be put in a different room. But because they're old and can't hear well they didn't hear my daughter's dog. He's 6 mos. old right now and weighs 60 lbs. He galloped around the house but is such a lover boy. Too bad it was stormy out as wanted to take him to beach cuz he's never been. Well hoping for good news on the vivi front.

Glad you enjoyed your Thanksgiving. My son, His fiance and their 8 month old bulldog came over. Daisie weighs 50 lbs and is twice the size of Piper who is a cocker spaniel. She's not that fond of Daisie and we have to watch her since she has a bruised hip. So they were both on leashes which proved interesting between the table and chairs. But we all had a good time and stuffed ourselves. Had to try everything! Hoping for good news.

We pray this night,Father, that You continue Your watch over Vivi,Gibby,Zoey,Vern,Bowdee,Ticket,Tarik,Saffie, PA bullie girl, the show babies, Butttons,Biggie,Sniffles,Holly, African Grey, Faithful (the little girl's seizure dog),Shimi, Yorkie, Black Afghan, Buddy, Rags, Precious, Whippet Annie, so that not even “one paw slips”. Show them to the volunteer of Your choice so that they may return to their earthly families. Surprise us by sending Vivi home to a volunteer (Kathy from Bayside,Rosa,Tina,Gail T,Bonnie,Diane T.,Diane K-M,Darlene,Debbie,Monica,Lois T.,Nancy M,Barbara Jean,Linda S. and her husband Mike, or Renee? Isaiah 65:24 "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."
You Lord God are not only the giver of life but also the sustainer there of. Every creature that has breath, has it because You oh Lord have given it to them. And we know from Your word that You care for and protect all Your creation. We thank You Lord that not only do You hear our prayers but You answer them before we are even finished asking. Dear Heavenly Father I ask that you glorify Your Son Jesus, our Lord and savior. Show Your power and manifest Your word in the sight of all those who are envolved in the Vivi search. Show them what a great and mighty God You are. Let them experence Your awsome majesty, Your unfailing love. Make them aware of how much You care not only for Vivi and the other lost ones but also for their desire to help them. Let them see that You care more than we could ever care. Show Yourself to be the awsome God of Your word. Father God I ask with boldness that You bring Vivi and the others home. And with confidence I thank You that You have answered this request long before I finished writing it. In the name of Your precious Son Jesus I ask and thank You. You are the awsome God and I love You. Amen.
