Vivi compatriots

Ygp1a1 Since compassion knows no breed, Vivi searchers who have pounded the New York City pavement looking for the wandering whippet have also saved numerous other lost and stray animals.

One of the latest is Duke, a 8- or 9-month-old lab-mix rescued by Rosa Chile, who persuaded his owner to give him up. Duke was living in a rusty crate in the backyard, with no shelter from the elements.

"He is truly a great dog," writes Barbara-Jean Landsperg, who can only continue to foster him for a very short period. " Housebroken.  Only chews his toys. Walks well on a leash. Gets along with other dogs, although when it comes to food he growls at another dog if they come near. We can take anything (foodDuke3, chew toys, rawhides) from him with no problem.
" He sits and comes on command, but needs work on the other obedience commands," she continues. "Listens when told no and is just a joy to have around."
If you are interested in Duke, call Rosa at (917) 647-4848, or email Barbara-Jean at cagmom@msn.com.
Gail_s_chihuahua Next up is  an as-yet-nameless Chihuahua who was the impetus for a Vivi call in Kew Gardens Hills last night. (Vivi volunteers were suspicious when the caller said the dog had barked at her.) If you're interested in this diminutive dynamo -- he's estimated to be about 2 or 3 years old -- contact Bonnie Folz at pawsativebf@aol.com.

Okay folks. This is not fair. Putting that cute little Chihuahua face on here that looks so much like my Tinkerbell. Tink and I have been thinking of the possibility of another baby for a while. I have e-mailed Bonnie to find out more.

Now to see when Amanda will be coming to New York again to help me get him to Memphis if it works out.

Kathleen, that would be wonderful! I thought the cutie looked a bit like Tink. Will you have enough pillows....?
Hope Duke finds this kind of home.I thought everyone would enjoy this story with a happy ending. Barbara P's(MI)friend Ann lost her beloved elderly lab a while back, and as we have all experienced, was devastated by the death. We had hoped to hook her up with Kristy, but Kristy was adopted just as Ann found out about her. We've been looking for another needy lab, and found one. The lucky boy was picked up as a stray in Port Huron, and sent to Animal Control. I found out about him through petfinder.com connections. Long story short Ann and Bobbie the lab are a twosome!!!
Here's Barbara P's version-

Hooray! Just returned home after leaving Ann and her new lab, Bobbie, at
her house in West Bloomfield. When we arrived at the shelter this morning
the 1 year old chocolate lab, was no where to be seen. After checking they
found that the vet put him in pre-adoption, whatever that meant. Well they
couldn't reach the vet who was teaching at Baker College so we didn't know
why Bobbie wasn't in the regular adoption area. Finally they decided that
Ann could take Bobbie and she'd find out later why the vet moved him out of
the regular area. It seemed to Ann that he didn't seem ill - no kennel
cough, etc..
As soon as Ann's eyes met Bobbie's it was love at first sight. His tail
never stopped wagging and he was all over her with rubs and slobbery kisses.
There was no question this guy was heading to his new home with Ann.
We walked him around the area outside for a long while and he must have peed
twenty times and major pooped three times. He was in seventh heaven hopping
all over the grass with Ann. We finally approached the car...Ann opened the
back door and he happily jumped in and sat down. Whew...he must have riden
in cars before. Throughout the hour and a half ride to Ann's house he
peacefully looked out the windows and propped his throat on my outstretched
arm - between the two of us in the front seat. From time to time he nuzzled
Ann or me and then went back to leaning on my arm and staring out the front
window. He never barked or whined...a perfect little gentlemen. When we
arrived at Ann's home she led him to her backyard where he just ran and ran,
jumping and just generally frolicking all over the place. We threw him a
tennis ball and after chasing it all over the place he brought it back to
our feet over and over again. Ann put out Purina and a big tub of water for
him. So between drinking, munching and playing with the ball he was in
seventh heaven. What a fantastic sight to see him so happy to be so free.
While we were at the shelter we spoke with Pam and I told her the story of
why we happened to be in Port Huron for this dog....I told her (of course at
length) about Vivi and our blog, and I mentioned
We found that Bobbie had been at the shelter for two months and was found as a stray.

It was so hard for me to see all those hopeful beautiful faces in all those
cages. I just couldn't stay back there as long as Ann did.
Well, sorry I rambled. I'm just so excited that this story has a wonderful
ending/beginning. Bobbie has a new forever home and Ann is so happy to have
her new best friend.
Thank you for all the help you gave to make this a good event. I really do
appreciate that you cared so much to help Ann.

Now we need that little wisp of a dog in NY to get found and returned to her
home in CA. It'll happen....we're all praying so hard for her.
Thank you.
Barbara

Oh Sharon, there will always be enough pillows. We may just have to buy some more (hee, hee). More pillows and I am going to have to upsize to a king size (instead of queen size) bed too. Tinkerbell hogs about two-thirds of the bed as it is right now. Of course, we have to have Miss Piggy and her two Fluzzies in the bed each night too. Oh no, she is not spoiled.

Now if I adopt him should I name him Peter Pan to go along with Tinkerbell perhaps?

Peter Pan it is! Pan would be a good nick name for a little boy as Tink is for Tinkerbell. Are you considering it Kathleen? Just think-you would have your very own New Yorker! I bet he would adjust very well to your Southern hospitality and Tink would have a playmate to dominate (heehee)!!!

I am definitely considering it Mila. I am waiting for 7:00 pm in Memphis (free calls on my Sprint). I think I have Bonnie's phone number still. I am going to call her and talk to her if she is available. I like the nickname "Pan" too. Peter would sound a little strange calling the poor little fella. Pan is CUTE!

Wonder if he barks with a New York accent (hee, hee). We can have him saying "ya'll" in no time though. One thing for sure, I can promise the foot soldiers he would be loved very, very much. We "ain't rich" in Memphis, but we sure take care of each other and love each other immensely. Tink is lying over both my feet right now as I type. Such a little lover she is.

Oh my, got so excited over the little Chihuahua, that I almost forgot to post this incredible news. Got this e-mail today. Congratulations animal lovers, WE DID IT. No animal will be left behind again.
---------------------------
Dear Kathleen,

This past Friday at the White House, President Bush signed the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act into law.

This landmark legislation, which was strongly backed by The Humane Society of the United States, requires local and state disaster plans to include provisions for household pets and service animals in the event of a major disaster or emergency. When I was in the Gulf during Hurricane Katrina, I saw the government's failure to have a plan for helping animals. Tens of thousands of animals suffered terribly and were lost or left behind because our communities and responders didn't have a plan in place.

With more than 358 million pets in the United States residing in 63 percent of American households, the PETS Act will help ensure that Americans never again are faced with the horrifying choice of abandoning their pet and finding their way to safety, or staying with their pet and remaining in a hazardous, and potentially life-threatening situation.

Some states and local communities have already engaged in disaster preparedness for animals, and with a federal law now in place, the future for you and your companion animal in a disaster is much brighter.

Thank you for helping us pass the PETS Act, and for all you do on behalf of animals!

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

Kathleen, I hope it all works out! What a wonderful result that would be. He's such a cute little baby.

Thank you so much for posting that Kathleen. No animal left behind.....we all cried for the animals that couldn't leave and will cry for some time for those that are still trying to survive, but we will not have to ever be faced with that horrendous choice of staying or going again.

Pan would be so lucky to join Tink and you in Memphis and you two would be blessed also with this handsome boy! I can see Tink and Pan now-poor Kathleen on the couch again!

sorry, meaning the bed hogs would drive you away to the couch for a decent nights sleep. Didn't come out right!!

Just got two e-mails from Bonnie. She is going to let Kathleen (Kathy in Bayside) know I am interested, but it appears two other people are interested as well. I may have lost out on "Pan" today. Any other time I would have seen this earlier, but I was at that darn doctor's office today sitting and waiting all afternoon. Oh well, maybe it will work out in the end.

Thought I would give everyone a good laugh. I was moving some medical record charts on our patients onto my rolling cart to take and extract and QA data from last Thursday for our databases.

Well one slipped from my hands, and went straight down on my left foot. It weighed about 5 lbs or so I would think. Well my foot was a nice shade of black and blue (especially the center toes). They made me go to the doctor today. So he believes I may have broken two of my toes. Of course, they put me in one of those lovely post-surgery walking shoes, and said to come back in two weeks.

He said he could operate and straighten my toes on this arthritic foot while doing so by repairing with pins, but I told him, "No thank you." I am not ready for that pain yet.

Guess you nice ladies had better keep me in those prayer requests. I seem to be in self-destruct mode or something (hee, hee)!

Poor toes, sweetie. Have started a candle group for you named TOES! I am sure it is very painfull for you and pray you heal quickly.
RATS about Pan. Maybe you will still be able to adopt him-begging and pleading and crying sometimes works! If you cannot adopt him, maybe there is a Memphis Pan just waiting for you and Tink!

Duke is a very handsome young man puppy. Housebroken and leash trained? Someone lost him for sure-hopefully they are looking hard for him and find him before some other lucky family gives him a forever home! What a hunk he is and you are a real gem for taking him in B-J!

Just a real quick update on the Chihuahua. He is terribly underweight. You can see his spine and his butt bones but he has the most beautiful bright and clear, healthy blue/green eyes. He was a little snippy with Gail when she took him out of his crate at my friends house but after she put him in her car and give him some rubs she put him on her lap to drive and HE GAVE HER KISSES!!

Hey Mila Duke was not lost, Rosa and Tina happened to see this poor soul wandering the street with a harness wrapped around his ankles, it seems he alwys runs loose or the owner had him outside in a crate with nothing to protect him for the rain or elements, poor baby is also skinny and was eating chicken bones. GGRRR makes me mad, she has another small dog in the house and works long hours and could not care for him. That is no excuse for leaving him outside in a crate all day and night. I would so love to have him, I met him over the weekend and fell in love with him the second i saw him. He is a good boy considering his prior. Much better looking in person and his tail never stops wagging.

Oh and speaking of toes i just told kathy in bayside how I cut my toe posting flyers on Sunday, stupid cement sticking up from tree roots and not watching beacuse i was so busy looking thru wooden boards around abandoned homes for vivi. Queen klutz I am.

Henceforth, Debbie of Weenie Queen fame will be known as QUEEN KLUTZ..Now the gals have two Queens and for sure, another KLUTZ..haaaaaaaaaa..Darlene and Debbie...anyone else care to share the title?

Did Darlene get back from her trip?

Debbie, does that mean Duke isn't up for adoption?
If the woman doesn't have time to care for him, is she giving him up? Poor little thing.

All praise to Thee, my God, this night
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own almighty wings.
Amen.

Creator God, Keep one wonderful whippet in the safety of your wings tonight, and send her home to her mama Jil, tomorrow! Bless all those lost and homeless, and give them (back) to their forever homes. Bless Anne and Bobbie the lab as they begin
their companion relationship! Bless BJ and give Your servant the job she deserves, and You want her to have! Thank you for the many happy endings You have given us, and hear us as we ask for a few more!
We pray this night,Father, that You continue Your watch over Vivi,Bowdee,Ticket,Buttons,Biggie,Sniffles,Holly, African Grey, Faithful (the little girl's seizure dog), Buddy, Rags, Precious, Whippet Annie Little Aussie, Apple Riley, and Montefiore Mama, Daddy, and girl (the “tree puppies’” family)so that not even “one paw slips”and now the new cemetary strays. Show them to the volunteer of Your choice so that they may return to their earthly families. Surprise us by sending Vivi home to a volunteer (BJ, Debbie, Darlene,Diane, Gail, Monica, Debbie?)
Many of us also have animals which need Your healing touch, Great Physician we lift to you for your healing touch:Scout,Ezme,Clarus,Skeeter,Star,Doogie, Prince the Sheltie, CJ, Dante, Felice, Max, Little McGee, Murphy, Mylie, Barbaro, Gunner, Linus, Kiva, Ellie,(restore all that had to be taken), Morgan, Little Andi, Nicki, Dude, Tucker, Brandy, Lexie, Isabella, Twin Kittens, Bowen, Pie Bird,Wanda and Heather.Enfold all of us in Your healing embrace.
We thank you for healing Tinkerbell, Maureen and Andi, and Zipper!! Thank You for McGee's weight gain.
We are frail Father and many of us need Your healing so that we can serve the purpose for which You have created us.
We lift up the following people in need of Your healing:Renee, Pam,Millicent,Jacque, JL, Lance, Madison, Kathleen's Mom Mary,Chris, Abby and Kathleen.
God of Power, stand behind Tammie and Doogie, Duke and Denise, and Otis' followers, as they have stood behind these animals, until justice is done.Thank you so much for helping us find a good home for Kristy and help us to find a good home for Tashia, Duke, and little Chi.Thanks for Bobbie's new home.

Be with all who mourn tonight. Greet all, human and animal alike, who will make the journey to Paradise this night. Reward our faithful animal companions who have gone ahead. Let all who are homeless know Your love, and ours, too.
Send your angels and saints to work with Vivi's angels. These NYC volunteers serve as Your compassionate presence on earth. Don't let them become discouraged. Let them know that prayer wise "we've got their back"!
Let our faith grow as a result of this experience! Restore as we sleep, Heavenly Father, as we turn over the night watch to you! YOU ARE IN CHARGE! AMEN!

"Wayne Dean, abuser of Otis was found competent enough to stand trial. On November 14, he has a pre-trial hearing which will set the trial date. Damn, these wheels of justice turn slowly."

IF ANY OF YOU WANT THE DETAILS, LET ME KNOW @

Details are gross, but the freak will stand trial!!!

MORE OTIS INFO":The prosecutor said she was amazed at the number of petitions and letters and to keep them coming. She's also hoping that rescue groups and animal lovers will come to the trial and wear their respective t-shirts. I didn't go to most of these but a few of our retired adopters (I still work for a living) did go."

This info came to me from a gal who is with Greyhound rescue, its not me speaking

"Since Dean has been in jail this whole time, fellow prisoners broke his jaw and his ribs."

Bless you guys who signed the petition and wrote to the proper people! I'm so happy, I'm crying..

Good I hope they do more than break some bones. Let them do to him what he did to Otis!!!

Thanks for the update Ruby, I agree Kathy! I hope they keep breaking more of Deans bones, he is getting such a small dose of the cruelty he endured on to Otis, his day will come!
Praying hard for our Vivi, she just has to be found before winter, can't bare to think about it. They are predicting snow here in Michigan by the end of the week, I was hoping for a long Indian summer for Vivi's sake. VIVA LA VIVI!!! Rosa

Rosa, I'm also praying hard for Vivi! They have to find her!!!!!!

I'm very happy about the abuser standing trial! I'd like to be on the jury! Thanks again everyone, best news I've had in a long time!

Kathy from Bayside- As soon as I saw the picture of the little Chihuahua I thought he looked very thin. Unlike other breeds that gain weight rapidly (in weeks) after being neglected; it takes chi's much longer.
I'm sure the blog regulars remember the story of our little chihuahua Max, whom we adopted five months ago. He was starved, neglected, terribly abused and was found by the animal control officer laying in a ditch. When we adopted him he was skin and bones- 4 pounds. (I noticed the back bones right away in the picture on this thread and my heart sank. The poor little soul reminded me of how Max looked).
It took nearly two weeks before Max gained anything because his little stomach was in such a state. He is now close to 7 pounds and is running around our back yard like a deer. He loves Chicken and eats plenty of it!!!
Kathleen- we have two chihuahuas and you would love having a pair!! They are characters, aren't they? Who knows, maybe this will still work out for you and your Tinkerbell. I know one thing.. if the little Chi was able to live with you, he'd be treated like a King.
Also, our Max nipped as well, but it was out of fear. Let's face it- chihuahuas are highly tempremental dogs- it's what most chi owners love the most about them. Good Luck Kathleen!!!

sorry for the double post, I'm so excited I thought I went into the other blog..haaaaa...This is a great day for justice for Otis the Greyhound! God love the doggie and make him happy in heaven!

RUBY You are fantastic. You have done so much for Otis. I forgot to add the numbers to your email that's why it was returned. Will repost it. So gald to see Dean was roughed up. Hope they do worse to him.

Ruby - Thanks for the update on Otis. I am very happy to see that this poor dog is starting to see some justice. It will be hard to wait and see what the final outcome will be on this case. I could think of a few nasty things that should be done to Dean as well!!

Kathleen - I hope it works out for to adopt that potential little "pillow hogger!!" That baby would be the king of the castle if he moved down South and received some Southern hospitality!!

Ruby - Thanks for the great news about Otis and for all your work on this petition for him. Knowing this scum is being harrassed in jail really raises my praise for convicts. Even they have moral limits it seems. They do not like people who abuse animals and children.

Thanks Pam. I may be getting another dog that Bonnie is working on for me. I think she will be wonderful too. I'm so excited about her also. Thanks Bonnie if you are out there. Sure hope Pixie comes to Memphis soon.

Lord, as this day ends,
soul and body, I am tired.
And all I have done:
is it worthwhile?
I need you, Lord,
where can I turn, except to you?
(Fr. Victor Hoagland, CP)
O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor are my eyes haughty;
I busy not myself with great things too sublime for me.
Nay rather, I have stilled and quieted my soul like a weaned child.
Like a weaned child on its mother's lap,
so is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord,
both now and forever. Psalm 131

Creator Father, Our days are long and a bit discouraging because we want Vivi home with Jil before the snow returns. We are also in the path of many animals who need homes, homes that we can't always personally give them. But we will try to find them a home in Your name, and in the name of Your always loving and compassionate Son.Help us to do what you would have us do, and help us to do what we can through Your strength. Give us peace as You give us at rest. In confidence we lift the following people and animals to Your care...
