Search coordinator Bonnie Folz sends this update:

<<Vivi Update 9/28/06

We are now into our 33rd week of the search for Vivi. Though it may not seem too much is happening, there’s lots taking place behind the scenes.

There’s a great group of out-of-town volunteers that continue to fax, email and snail mail businesses throughout Queens and Brooklyn, keeping the neighborhoods aware that Vivi is still missing. We are also looking into newspaper ads.

Another tracker, Harry Oakes, paid a visit to New York with his search-and-rescue dog; however, there was still no sign of the elusive whippet.

We received a call on Friday from a man claiming to have seen Vivi in the neighborhood of Rego Park, an area of Queens not far from Forest and Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Rosa was unable to get the information we’d like to have confirming this sighting, as she couldn’t get a word in edgewise and the man hung up too soon. He called from a pay phone and asked that any reward be donated to St. Jude’s. We cannot for sure say it was Vivi this man saw. In any case, the foot soldier volunteers did canvas the area and new signs and posters have been put up around that area just in case.

As soon as the call came in we contacted Laura Totis and Sam Connelly of Maryland to see if either were available to at least confirm whether or not it was Vivi this man saw. Neither tracking teams were immediately available to make the trip.

A second call came in today from a woman in Rego Park who noticed one of the new posters up. She asked another lady who was passing by if she ever saw this dog, and the lady said that someone told her they did. Unfortunately, again, there’s no way to confirm this as she heard it from someone who heard it from someone else, and we have no idea when the dog was seen.

In any case, we immediately called Sam Connelly to see if she could come in and though she was planning on doing so this weekend, she’s come down with a bad cold and cannot make the trip. We are awaiting a call back from Laura Totis to see if she is available to come in as soon as possible. I also made a call to Debra Adler from New Jersey, but was unable to contact her.

We are working on having a tracking team come in, check the Rego Park area first and then check those other areas the volunteers here feel Vivi may be. This would pretty much leave no stone unturned, so to speak.

Unfortunately, the DNA results from the stool taken from Forest Park near where tracking team Laura Totis’ dog picked up Vivi scent turned out not to belong to Vivi. Thanks to the American Kennel Club and the folks at their DNA lab for helping us out.

Two more night-vision goggles and two more bionic ears are being purchased for those volunteers on the ground, that are able to go out at night searching.

We are following up on a few phone calls that came in as well, but for various reasons, I cannot elaborate about them here.

With dog shows coming to Queens at the end of the month, we’ve contracted Sign-A-Rama of Middle Village, who made up the magnetic Vivi signs, to make up corrugated signs, double sided, to stake into the ground and the kennel club has been kind enough to allow us to set up a table at the show with information about Vivi still being missing.

There are also dogs shows this weekend in Long Island, where my club, the Big Apple Sighthound Association, is having a lure-coursing demonstration. I’ll make sure to have info on hand there as well.

Wouldn’t it be great to see Vivi run onto the field to "catch the bunny"!

Once again, thanks to everyone for their help, kind words and support.

Still keeping the faith,

Bonnie>>

Thanks Bonnie. This is very encouraging news.

Bonnie - Maybe we should ask them to replace that "bunny" with a "squirrel," and we just might get our girl (no rhymn intended, hee, hee).

Here is something to make us feel good - my friend is going to this sanctuary next week and as part of her volunteering, was asked to help with the Lebanon animals. apparently Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah heard that there were 300 animals in Lebanon that had been rescued and moved outside of Beriut because of the bombing. They chartered a huge plane and brought all 300 animals to their sanctuary. My friend has offered to bring me back a kitty since I haven't found Bowdee yet - so I'm thinking about it - besides, Bowdee needs a playmate!!!! Check out these precious animals http://news.bestfriends.org/index.cfm?page=news&mode=entry&entry=F1F34B50-BDB9-396E-9CCF7F39DE2D9463

Wow, things are suddenly picking up in a hurry. From no sightings in weeks, to two in a fairly recent period and not so very far apart geographically.

And twice now in two days I've had posts eaten -- the first by my own computer when it choked on an acrobat file in another window and closed all my browsers, and now one just gone on to the aether with no trace after submission. I guess I shouldn't try posting that one again. I'll take it as a sign.

I'll say this much: she's certainly a survivor. Let's hope she finally makes that one mistake, or that one bit of routine that gets her caught by one of these dedicated searchers. She needs to go home to California.

To those of you near Queens, keep looking. Think like a smart whippet, not a person. You're all in my prayers, as is Vivi.

Sometimes dogs turn up how you least expect. And sometimes you get lucky. Tuesday night, I went to take my Stubborn, er, Scottish Terrier out for a walk. As I pulled the car in the driveway after work, I'd frowned when I saw a young boy maybe 12 taping up homemade signs on notebook paper to every stop sign at the corner of the street. I went in, took the dog out for the walk, and read the sign as I passed. "Found: Dog. Black Lab. "Biscuit", followed by a local phone number. I didn't know Biscuit. As we went several blocks away, I spotted more signs (I swear the boy posted one on every stop sign in the area!), each done by hand. We got to the corner of the side street near a busy road, about two blocks away when a young blond girl, maybe 6 years old, bounced out of a car at the stop sign and pulled the found dog sign off, and exclaimed, "That's our dog!" as she waved the sign for a moment before getting back into the back seat of the car, a huge grin on her face. Clearly, the family had been out searching for Biscuit together, and seemed happily surprised to learn he'd been found safe so quickly. If only Vivi's search were so easy.

what a nice story Val

Kathy - Go for it! Adopt one of these sweet babies from Lebanon. Bowdee will get jealous and come home then for sure.

They are so beautiful. Nice website also.

Kathleen - wish I had the money to have one of those sanctuaries here.........can you imagine - all of you bloggers would have to come visit and volunteer :)

Kathy (CO):
Perhaps after VIVI is found, we can direct our collective fund raising efforts for a sanctuary. I am in Salt Lake on a business trip and the news regarding Best Friends was front page news yesterday. It was also on local TV news. Made my day. It was so hearwarming and touching to hear about the dedication of those volunteers at Best Friends. Also a nice break from the bad news that normally grace the front page of the many newspapers. I'm sure that if you decide, your friend will find you a lovely cat among those rescued.

Anyone on here that can talk to Renee, I would sure love to see her adopt one of these babies too. I worry about her because I can tell she is grieving so hard. Skully Cat would want his mother to be okay and continue on helping other babies I'm sure.

If you are out there Renee, we love and miss you so much! Hope you are feeling much better.

Love Kathleen ("Bad Back Club") and the "Pillow-Stealing, Bad Back Club" Tinkerbell

Martha, speaking of bad backs, hope you are feeling much better with yours.

Wow! I take off an afternoon and three new posts!
Kathy in CO - Adopt one of those fur babies! That story is so cool! I saw that on the news when the organizer of this Lebanon rescue was trying to get the animals brought back.
I hope all this news is the start of good things to come!
Oh Marty - I'm caught up, send some more.

I'm working on some now Pam. When I'm done I will send some your way. Thanks.

This sure does all of our hearts good!
SO much being done to find Vivi. I think everyone will sleep better tonight knowing everything and everyone is working so hard to find her.

It would sure be a blessing if some calm soul in Rego Park befriended ViVi and was able to feed and then contain her so she could be sent home. it is absolutely remarkable that shes manage dto survive.

The Canticle of the Creatures
~St. Francis of Assisi

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
All praise is Yours, all glory, honor and blessings.
To you alone, Most High, do they belong;
no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

We praise You, Lord, for all Your creatures,
especially for Brother Sun,
who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor,
of You Most High, he bears your likeness.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars,
in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Creator God, Father of All, We praise you for the wonder of Your Creation. Keep Vivi, Bowdee, and all the lost and homeless in Your sight tonight. Heal all of our sick, send special healing to Pam during her recovery--- We lift these and all of our petitions in confidence to You!
We ask You to answer them in Your time, will, and in Your holy name.

Show them to the volunteer of Your choice so that they may return to their earthly families. Surprise us by sending Vivi home to a volunteer (BJ, Debbie, Darlene,Diane, Gail, Monica, Debbie?)

God of Power, stand behind Tammie and Doogie, Duke and Denise, and Otis' followers, as they have stood behind these animals, until justice is done.Thank you so much for helping us find a good home for Kristy!!!Help Tashia the Husky find a home.
Be with all who mourn tonight. especially Gail and her family. Let her mom who often searched with her for Vivi, join the search from Heaven. Does anyone if Vivi is spayed? I'm assuming she is not. When is it projected that she would come into season? Wouldn't an intact (not neutered) dog with a very good nose be able to find her?
I know it's sounds very basic but I think it's worth a shot. I know another dog (off lead) finding Vivi wouldn't ensure a capture but it should help to narrow the search. Is my thinking flawed?

hb -

I'm hoping for that very calm soul in Rego Park to befriend Vivi also.

I wish everyone could have had the conversation I did with Rick that day on the phone. Believe me, you would understand Vivi much better, and the reasons she is able to survive so well.

The fact that continous prayers are offered sure does its share to keep her safe I am sure, but also the fact that Jil taught her to be so independent and allowed her be the free-spirit she was running in the fields, hunting, and being the part of the breed of dog she is - a sighthound - sure has contributed to her survival as well. I'm sure Jil wishes she wasn't quite so independent sometimes and would come home.

Rick told me to look at Jil and to look at Vivi - they are alike. They are both very independent ladies. Jil gave Vivi a very special gift teaching her this independence.

As a Southern gal who was raised by two grandparents that taught me the same kind of independence, I can tell you it sure comes in handy all the time! Other than my grandparents' love and faith, it is the best gift they gave me growing up. And it is also a gift I was able to pass on to my two sons as well.

I just went back into the archives and was reading the very first post by Paul..........seems like yesterday but also feels like a lifetime ago........

Hi Doug,
Vivi isn't Spay. We were thinking she may be hidden away taking care of puppies.

Kathleen:
(hugs)
Thanks for the message, it means a lot to me. Sorry I have been missing from the blog, just been going through a ton of stuff, nothing good unfortunately. I was in the ER for a cat bite infection(long story), my close friends cancer has spread, my Uncle was also hospitalized recently, my little cousin has another tumor on her brain and has surgery in a few weeks, etc. It's just been crazy. I won't go on about it here, this is not the place, I'll send you an email when I get home. Just wanted to touch base and thank you for your sweet message. I miss you all, my Vivi friends and think of you all *constantly*. (hugs to all of you out there)
*still keeping hope & faith alive in nyc*
Renee

All my thoughts and prayers for your Renee - keep the faith - God will see you through

Thank you Kathy (smiles)

Renee -

I am SO glad to see you. I know you have had many problems. Our sweet B-J e-mailed me and let me know what has been going on. Tell that bad cat to get rid of her nasty attitude or I'll have to send Tinkerbell to get her back into line (hee, hee)! How dare she hurt you like that.

I know it hurts to type, so don't feel you have to e-mail unless you feel like it sweetie.

I'm putting a candle out there for you and all the others in your life with problems and illnesses too. I'll call it RENEE. Sharon, could we add Renee to our pray list please? I know she would appreciate the prayers from all of us.

Renee -- SO good to hear from you. I've been including you in my prayers.

Elizabeth- thank you! You guys are the best, you really are.

Kathleen - I've been meaning to ask you about Tinkerbell. How is the pillow hogger doing after that episode from a few weeks(?) ago?

Hi Pam -

Thanks for asking about the little pillow hogger. She seems to be doing very well after the meds and her shot at the vet. We have not had to put her back on the meds so far. She stayed with the same vet's office while I was out-of-town so they could observe her and treat her if any of the problems occurred again.

Nothing but a good report for Miss Tinkerbell though. She loves that vet's office, and they love her. Sharon and Betty, if you see this, I think you can remove Tinkerbell from that long list now. She and I sure thank all of you for the sweet e-mails, prayers and candles along the way. They worked for sure! Another success story of this blog.

Please continue to remember Mom if you will though. They have said this last incidence was definitely a reoccurrence of the breast cancer. The surgeon really wanted to put her on radiation just in case, but Mom did not want to do this. She goes back in 2 months and they will reassess her. In the meantime, her oncologist is now sending her for tests on her thyroid. From my research on the blog, I see that thyroid disorders and breast cancer can be linked by research. I am not quite sure why he is requesting these tests, but have a call in to his nurse to discuss this with her. Please keep praying very hard for Mary Ann, she and I appreciate all of your prayers very much.

Will certainly continue to remember your mother in thoughts and prayers.

She's got my prayers Kathleen

Thanks Pam and Kathy, and everyone else too. I always know I can count on these animal lovers. We are people with good hearts (a little wild at times, but very good hearts)!

Hey, if there are any football fans or UT fans in this bunch, I have to say "GO TIGERS!" (hee, hee). ESPN around 11:00 CST tomorrow. University of Memphis (my alumni group) vs. UT. Got my fingers and toes crossed for this one! GOOOOO TIGERS!!!

MADISON UPDATE:

http://princessmadison.smugmug.com/

September 28
Hello all of Princess Madison's Kingdom! ::giggle:: I hope that everyone is doing well. Madison has had a good few days. We have not been having to suction her much at all. She loves her Vest Airway clearance system. I think it almost rocks her to sleep. We will continue to be religious about her breathing treatments and vest chest treatments, especially if the trach comes out. (YAY) There is not too much to update on, but I did add some new pictures into the therapy amd life at home galleries on Madison's photo site. Check them out! More soon...As usual, B+ for Madison! God is good!

All seems quiet here, I hope that is a good thing.
I did my poster thing and got them in the mail this afternoon.
I know so many of you have been at this for months, but this is my first, so I did a few, sent them off and I can do a bunch every week if that will help.

Good weekend to all.

Wendi from N.H: Diane received your posters and I picked them up today. Thank you so much..

Angel of God, My Guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this night be at my side-
To light,
To guard,
To rule,
and guide. Amen.
(How many people remember this prayer from childhood?)

Hoping for good news about sightings and scents for Vivi. Praying that this weekend will bring good information on the "elusive butterfly"!

DO YOU HAVE DELTA SKYMILES THAT ARE ABOUT TO EXPIRE? If so, don't let Delta keep them!!!!!!

You can donate those miles to a very worthwhile cause, Canine Assistants, by going to http://www.delta.com and search for donating Skymiles. Here is the info. I just donated about 2,500 Skymiles to them. Let's help this great organization bring more trained dogs to people who need their companionship and help. It is a win-win situation. You can save a dog and give it a good home, while helping someone in need as well.

Canine Assistants: Canine Assistants is a nonprofit organization dedicated to training dogs to help children and adults who have physical disabilities, seizure disorders, and other special needs. These extraordinary dogs can, among other things, turn on lights, open doors, pull wheelchairs, and even go for help in an emergency. They also provide security and ease social barriers. This allows their human partners to live happier, more productive lives.

Canine Assistants does not charge a fee since that would place their services out of the reach of those who need them most. Rather, they rely on the generosity of those who recognize that aiding the independence and well-being of one benefits all. Independent audits show that over 94 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to aid their clients.

Canine Assistants has over 600 children and adults currently on their waiting list for a service dog. Please use your power to help by donating your miles to Canine Assistants.

To learn more, visit Canine Assistants. You can donate your miles to Canine Assistants by e-mail.

Thought being so recent someone may come here for help on this dog.

This DOG - ID#A679259

Are you my owner? I am lost and someone is holding onto me temporarily.

I am a spayed female, tan Greyhound.

My age is unknown.

Someone found me on Sep 30, 2006.
This information is 1 hour old.

There are two greys that were found 1 day apart. Wonder if they belong together?

This DOG - ID#A679207

Are you my owner? I am lost and someone is holding onto me temporarily.

I am a spayed female, gray Greyhound.

The finder thinks I am about 6 years old.

Someone found me on Sep 29, 2006.

Sharon I remember that prayer well. Also found a place where I can buy the old Baltimore catechism from the 50's, with the thin paper and the milk bottles showing state of grace, venial and mortal sin !! Can't believe I threw it out, I keep so much other stuff !

I have alerted a NY greyhound group about these
2 found greys. They can be traced thru ear tatoos
hopefully. This group is very good, and will pick
up the greys if the owners can't be found.

Greyt news SueG! Now why didn't I think of that? Hopefully the owners will step up and go and get them!

SueG - That is wonderful! Thanks for taking care of these two babies.

Mila - That is why we have accomplished so much on this blog. We all have contacts and information which we gladly share with each other to help these animals (and people). They don't call us Team Vivi for nothing! We are all united in our love for animals from all over the US and the World.

**** Mila and BJ If you are in NY, is there any way you can check those "greyhounds" to be positive they are not Vivi??? Shelter workers are often saints, but they mis-identify dog breeds CONSTANTLY as you may know. I note there is no picture on the website.

Also, Mila you mentioned earlier about a national abuse registry. There is a database at www.pet-abuse.com/database/ you may want to check out.

Sue Thank you for contacting the rescue. I was thinking that would be a good idea. An ear tatoo should be pretty visible no? There should be good records on them if they were adopted and have tatoos.

Proverbs 1:33
Whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

This is a warning I read on the AOL welcome screen, please tell anyone you know... Thanks, Chrissy.

NEW YORK (Sept. 30) - Keep those sugarless treats out of Fido's reach. Veterinarians warned on Friday that a commonly used sweetener might cause liver failure in dogs, and perhaps even kill them.

their report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association appears to strengthen the suspected link between the sugar substitute xylitol, thought to make dogs sick, and possible liver failure.

Xylitol, a naturally occurring product, is found in many sugar-free chewing gums, candies, baked goods and toothpastes.

Researchers Sharon Gwaltney-Brant and Eric Dunayer with staff at a poison unit of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Urbana, Illinois, gathered information on eight dogs treated between 2003 and 2005 after eating products containing xylitol.

Each dog became ill, and five died or had to be put down because of liver failure, possibly from ingesting xylitol.
One dog who had to be euthanized had eaten four large, chocolate-frosted muffins containing about 1 pound of xylitol.

"People don't think sugar-free gum can kill their dog. I didn't before I got into this. But this is something people should be aware of," Gwaltney-Brant, who co-authored the study with Dunayer, said in a statement.

Gwaltney-Brant said for dogs, ingesting even a small amount of xylitol can trigger significant insulin release, which drops their blood sugar and can be fatal.

"A 22-pound dog who consumes one gram of xylitol should be treated," she said, adding that further studies were needed to definitely establish a cause-and-effect relationships.

A few weeks ago, a young woman brought a cocker spaniel into emergency saying he ate a pack of sugarless gum, the dog was made to vomit and the owner thought all was well. But the vet explained that much of this stuff is absorbed very quickly and can cause a severe drop in blood goucose (then liver failure) within a few hours. He wanted to keep the dog overnight to monitor....I don't think the girl believed him because her dog seemed perfectly OK...she made telephone calls and asked her friends, etc if they thought this was true. Her father who owns a car dealership didn't want to give her the money for overnight ICU...and I found out when I came back the next week that she had signed her dog out that night. I hope he was lucky, but we'll never know. Xylitol is in most toothpaste also.

We didn't find Vivi but we found Bullwinkle's grave at Lutheran Cemetery. lol

DETAILS, B-J! DETAILS!!!

Hey there Ms Mila - Exactly what I was thinking too!

BTW, the lady in New York called me today and said from the pictures this dog was definitely not Sniffles, but she is printing out several copies of the poster of Sniffles and Vivi and will make sure they are seen in her area. Our little angel in Brooklyn is helping us. She is so nice sounding.

Way to go Kathleen!! You are amazing!
I hope her new pet rescue Play and Bark (4& a tail) does very well! More coverage for Vivi and Sniffles!! Woohooooo!

Hey Mila - You put that ad in and got us started. We can do well as a team! Woohoooooo is right.

Maybe I should put Tinkerbell on a leash and you should put Banjo in his harness, and see if we can "ferret" out that little gypsy girl of ours.

Wouldn't Vivi be surprised if she saw a ferret coming through a pipe at her somewhere (hee, hee).

I think Vivi would view Banjo as dinner once the suprise was over!! Tink and Banjo-not bad!

B-J where are you?? Don't leave us hanging-I didn't even know that Bullwinkle the Moose had crossed to the other side, let alone buried in NY.

Diane Tamm stopped by my house this weekend and dropped off two Squirrel Barkers (a thingie that makes noices like a squirrel) one for me and one for Gail. The other teams will also get some.. We are going to use them to see if Vivi reacts to the sound and comes running to us. Now woouldn't that be great if she did! I might even kiss Diane if she does, ok so I am lying. Yikees!!

Hey I don't know anu details. Is there a real Bullwinkle? And why in a human cemetery ot can a cartoon charactor die? A human named Bullwinkle? Anyone know?

Love the idea of the squirrel barkers Kathy.

BJ: I think they want to know if a tomb stone had the name Bullwinkle on it??

Oh well yes a big tomb stone with Bullwinkle in big letters and nothing else.

I think I saw that same one BJ.

B-J - I bet the large capital letters in Bullwinkle were the last name of maybe a couple or family that was buried there. That is how my grandparents grave marker reads and then has Robbie on her side and Earl on my grandfather's side.

B-J - Just did a search online for Bullwinkle in New York. There are a lot of families with the last name of "Bullwinkle" there. Wonder if one of them had anything to do with the cartoon character (hee, hee).

FYI - I had to research this Bullwinkle cartoon character. Just found this. I just love the internet. You can find so many interesting things there.

Bullwinkle J. Moose is a fictional character in the 1959–1964 animated television series Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show (often collectively referred to as Rocky and Bullwinkle), produced by Jay Ward. When the show moved networks (from ABC to NBC), its name was changed to The Bullwinkle Show, reflecting the popularity of Bullwinkle.

Ward and his then-assistant Alex Anderson created Bullwinkle for The Frostbite Falls Review, a storyboard idea which was never developed into a series. They gave him the name "Bullwinkle" after Clarence Bullwinkel, a car dealer, because they thought it was a funny name. Both Bullwinkle and Rocky were given the middle initial "J" in reference to Ward.

Also, Jim Davis named "Garfield" after his grandfather, James Garfield Davis. And according to Paul Harvey, Jim Davis created Garfield because he had loved cats all his life and unfortunately married a lady who was allergic to them. He could no longer have real cats of his own, but created Garfield to fill this gap. Garfield is absolutely my favorite cartoon in the whole wide world!

And now you know the rest of the story (hee, hee).
