The second in an occasional series that introduces Vivi searchers near and far.
Name: Karen Stinnett
Location: Jeffersonton, Virginia -- aka "horse country."
Age: "I forget. Oh, yeah. 50."
Occupation: Artist and art teacher
Fur-family: Karen has three rescue dogs -- Grace E and Patch, who are border collies and enthusiastic agility competitors, and Phoebe the collie -- as well as Big Kitty, a 20-pound Maine coon. Two "constant visitors" include a Springer spaniel and "one who looks like Cousin It from 'The Addams Family.'"
Favorite American idol: "They all look the same to me."
Pet peeve: "I hate meetings, even more when they pass out an agenda and then read it to you."
Hobbies: "Agility, which took the place of horses after the horse I had for 25 years died of old age. Patch’s hobby is running in circles around the UPS truck when it stops in the driveway."
Favorite flick: "I like to watch the video I have of the 1973 Belmont Stakes, never tire of it." Also: Fellini’s "Amarcord."
Role in the Vivi search: "Coordinator of the out-of-town search-support effort" best describes it. Karen also sends out a daily electronic Vivi update.
Why she started the e-mail updates: "I saw a lot of people who wanted to help, but had no idea what to do. As it has gone on, we all begin to forget who has been called and when. I have almost 600 saved emails in my Vivi Bulletin file and probably that many on my laptop."
Who gets them: An assortment of people who are willing to help, fax, mail and make calls.
How someone gets on the "in" list: "By helping. I only send to those who have been willing to do something concrete. Then the blog can be for everything else."
Most moving thing about the email list: "We have one person who is a 9/11 survivor who says she survived in part by going home to a little dog who has since died of old age. She says to her, Vivi has come to symbolize 'the one who must be saved.'"
What it's like to watch the Vivi search from afar: "Sometimes it's stressful, because we cannot see for ourselves what is happening. Sometimes, wacky. I find myself explaining it while, say, visiting friends in Maui. 'I have to check my email because I am searching for a Whippet in NYC!' 'Oohhkay,' they say.'"
Toughest agility moment: After Grace E (right) did one jump in a series of them, Karen heard a gasp from the crowd: Her dog had had diarrhea between the first and second jumps. On AstroTurf, no less. "That’s a disqualification, by the way. And I got to clean it up, with an audience."
Most embarrassing thing your dog's ever done: While Grace E takes the cake (and most likely ate it, too), Karen's late German Shepherd, Zak, mistook her car for a pickup and jumped on its roof, and ate a Thanksgiving cheesecake while visiting a family Karen barely knew. He also mounted a woman from behind as Karen was talking to her. "I saw his paws appear around her waist. I could go on ... "
What the blog has taught you: "You can get to know people you have never seen."
What people say when they see one of your paintings: "One hundred percent of the time, the question is, 'How long did it take you to do that?' Then they often say, 'My house needs painting. Ha ha.'"
Ever plan to paint Vivi? “I usually paint architectural subjects, but for fun and friends I often paint animals and have a portfolio of them. I painted a greyhound last year. So, perhaps.”

WAY TO GO KAREN. Your doing a excellent job and we appreciate you very much.
I just love these profiles they are doing - we finally get to meet everyone.
And ditto Marty - I agree!!!
Great profile, Karen. You deserve to be in the spotlight. You keep all of us out- of- staters informed and able to help.
Karen , Thank you for EVERYTHING you do for Vivi and also TEAM VIVI . We have talked several times and you are such a sweet person. One of these times your subject line is going to be Vivi found ! Can't wait for that to happen. Until then keeping the faith , Christina.
Yeah, Karen! Great to put a face with a name! For someone who hates agendas you sure keep us organized! Thanks!
Karen - great profile, love your T-Shirt. You are the best with all you do from afar, not sure how you have been able to keep track..
Keeping the faith for VIVI in TX
I like agendas (my own) I just don't like having someone else's read outloud to me like I am 5. :) I had to pick from about 150 pet peeves and that was the first that came to me.
Feels silly to be the center of attention.
Thanks everybody.
Hey Karen!!!
Way to go girl!!! You are an extremely important and irreplaceable part of this search!!! Not to mention one of the nicest people around! Thanks for making me feel welcome in the beginning when I first started out in this venture!! I enjoy our talks and look forward to your daily updates.
Lois T
Everyone make sure you're including Lois B's Tucker in your prayers (another whippet).
Prayers for Pets is a group of people who've been praying for Vivi with us. I received the following request from them:
Please Pray for Bowen, my 2 year old Red Bellied Parrot who
loves life and everyone who comes in contact with him. Bowen is
suffering with an undiagnosed problem that is blocking his trachea
and syrinx (voicebox) after a fall on August 4, 2006. He has spent
almost everyday for the past 3 weeks in the Vet hospital and 4 nights
in ICU Emergency. He cannot breathe on his own and is therefore
breathing through a tube inserted 3 days ago into his right side air
sac which replaced a tube that had been inserted into his left side
air sac the previous 10 days. He is trying so hard to hold on. He
has let everyone due his procedures without a fight, takes his
medicine willfully, and still continues to love to be held by anyone
willing to hold him. He has stayed extremely sweet and is normally
very talkative but has not been able to speak since his fall due to
his trachea and syrinx being blocked by fluid and debris. Please Pray
for him. I love him with all my heart and desperately need your
prayers. With Love, Light, and Gratitude, Tricia
I know that there are bird lovers out there! Thanks!
You're doing a wonderful job and your updates are fantastic. I'm also glad to be able to put a face with a name. My hat's off to anyone that does agility. All that running.
I didn't know if it made the news, but in little Montville, CT, the animal control officer that my and daughter and I volunteer for gained a new tenant. A 3 and a half foot crocodile that a woman and her boyfriend found on a street corner. They called Jane who used a dog pole and got him in a crate. She named him Xavier Silver Stripes. DEP was taking him to Boston today to be held until they can transfer him to Florida. He was eating chicken, sardines, hot dogs and they were keeping him hydrated. Luckily he didn't snack on anything else. Jane said the dog at the pound wasn't that they should find the person who had him and bring him up on charges of neglect and cruelty besides having an illegal animal. I'm making animal activists out of my whole family. Now we just have to get Miss Vivi home.
I should proof read my posts. I meant the dog at the pound didn't seem to be bothered by the crocodile and my husband said that the person who released him should be brought up on charges. Hope that sounds better. I'm lighting candles for everyone and passing on the Duke petition to everyone I know. We have to save that cutie.
Karen,
Way To Go! Nice to know there are sooo many good-heart animal lovers out there.
Susan,
I live in CT (New Haven County) and didn't hear about this on the news. My husband and I do travel to your neck of the woods though(for the casino!) once in a while.
Laura
Nice to meet you, Laura. Yes, the Mohegan Casino is a couple of miles away (Montville/Uncasville) and Foxwoods isn't much further.
Oh my goodness, don't anyone let that crazy Weenie Queen of ours know about this crocodile. She will want to adopt him just to share her weenies with him!
Now what would she tell John about that rescue. I know! She could tell him that she saw the crocodile swimming in one of the ponds in the park, and he latched onto her bag of weenies and would not let them go. She could stick a bag in his mouth to convince John.
Darlene, are you out there? Don't you want this poor weenie-loving guy? Hey, he would be a great "watch crocodile" when you gals are out late searching!
Susan,
Just signed back on. Nice to meet you, too. Such a wonderful group of people from all over on this blog.
Laura
I love it Karen! This is so cool...I should start a three ring binder of the Vivi Clan! First Darlene and now you... Thank you for your updates, I look forward to them every day.
Sharon, thank you for adding Tucker to the prayer chain. That is so incredibly sweet of you! I sure hope that poor Tricia's bird makes a full recovery. Poor little thing.
Barbara-Jean, I got your message! I see how things may have gotten a little "confusing" (tee hee). My boyfriend said you called back and explained what happened...too cute!
Off to bed...I have my nephew for the evening and we're building a Lego's car, and truck, and car, and truck, and...
Kathleen, I was thinking about Darlene when Jane wrote that she was feeding him hot dogs. She also said that if she had him a few more days he would be eating cheeseburgers and diet Pepsi like her. Actually, from the pictures, I thought he was cute. Now you know I'm a real animal lover.
Laura, we travel up your way to shop and visit friends. Nice to know there are other Vivi people nearby.
Isaiah 55:12-13. The mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. All this will be a memorial for the Lord, a sign that for all time will not be cut off!

Nice to see your profile Karen! I love your paintings and would love to see the Greyhound painting also????
You have done an outstanding job keeping the troops informed, even while your on the road!
I love your dog's name, GRACE-E..lol
update on the little sponges : The little devils went to work with me today...fortunately very slow day in emergency and one of my favorite vets there...the boys (consensus is they're boys...are about 7 weeks IF they're sibs and the little one is unusually small. They finally started playing tonight around 11. They do NOT have upper resp. infection but the eyes are still a little funny, neverthelsss they cleared up drastically since yesterday. Smaller kitten is 9 1/2 ounces, bigger one is one pound 4 ounces. They got physicals, baths and worming.
Today someone at Bide A Wee told David that they don't take kittens under 2 pounds (after he told them they were older than he thought orginally). Yesterday he was told that they need to be 6 - 7 weeks, "space permitting"
I have been visiting this site since day one hoping for Vivi's return to her family. In the process, I became aware of many lost dogs and sick dogs, cats, horses, birds and people. I have prayed for them, lighted candles and kept them in my thoughts.
Now my 10 year old weimaraner, Lexie, could use all the prayers, candles and positive vibes sent out for her. A week ago Thursday, she started limping, on Saturday I realized that there was a bump on her left wrist. Lexie has many lipomas on her body that are benign and not worth putting her under anesthesia to remove (as I did with the first two).
On Monday, the vet aspirated it and two other suspected lipomas. The suspected lipomas were just that, but the one on her leg had suspicious cell cluster. The vet biopsied it on Thursday and discovered another suspicious but small lump(because of hair loss on it)on the side of her neck.
She aspirated it and it was a mast cell tumor, which she removed and send out to determine what grade level it was. Lexie came home yesterday with a six inch incision on her neck and a much smaller one on her leg. She looks so pitiful because she has trouble getting around. She spent the afternoon resting and glad to be home with her pack-
Barnaby a crazy little white shitzu poodle lasa mix, Lulabelle a sassy but loveable chihuahua (both who we adopted from the shelter 3 years ago, so that Lexie would have a buddy-Barnaby found online with a cherry eye, another story, and my daughters came along and fell in love with Lula's ways and I agreed to get them both and never regretted it.
Lexie is one of those best worst dog types, her weimaner ways have always been a challenge but she helped me get through some very rough times by just being there to listen and let me rub her head and by showing me how great it is just to go out and take a walk and appreciate nature.
The biopsy results will be back early this coming week.
Please pray for her recovery, light some candles and
send her some positive vibes.
Thanks ever so much, Debbie Longenhagen
Debbie - I just started a candle group on the Gratefulness site, the group is Lexie. Bless you and Lexie. You might send a direct e-mail to Sharon and Betty to be sure they see your request for prayer for Lexie.
Kepping the faith for Vivi in TX.

Happy day! The greyhound that was lost in Brunswick, Maine yesterday has been found safe! Vivi MUST be next!
There is a missing IG in New Jersey:
At 7:30 pm this evening Thur 8/24 my 13 1/2 year old IG Noel darted out of the back gate and was seen going across Hope Rd along Edison Dr. One person believes she crossed back towards Society Hill Way after he attempted to avoid hitting her. The police and Red Bank Vet Hosp have been notified. Noel is micro-chipped. Mary Kosenski

MichelleWalker-Lewis, the IG Rescue volunteer has been putting up signs all over the area. Several neighbors have been driving around and some friends have been walking thru the woods. I have visited schools and dog friendly stores to put up signs or just let the maintenance workers know.
There have been no reports of a sighting of Noel since 7:30 pm Thurs on Hope Road. Noel is a greying light fawn color, missing most teeth, wearing no collar, 14 lbs, but is micro-chipped. I am hopeful that she is hiding and will come out looking for food, or if she sees a friendly face. If you live in the area of Hope road, Sycamore, or Hance Dr, or Society Hill, and your own dogs are barking at something, please check out what your own dogs see. Thanks for all your kind wishes. Mary
Great about the Greyhound! Necco, right? I lit candles for him.
Seems to me thats the second NOEL who got out.I can't remember what breed the other Noel was..hmmmmm
The article about DUKE, in Newsday is a nice article. I guess they have until Sept 5th which isn't that far away. I hope the sweet boy isn't put down! Again, I ask, please sign the petition:
www.SaveDuke.homestead.com
LOng Island had bad weather according to Martha, how is it where the WEENIE QUEENS are searching for Vivi today?
How on earth could a dog that has been in doggy jail for 2.5 years be so well aclimated to it. This dog is strolling thru the hallway like it is home - well I guess it is to him. For him to be so calm with all that noise and barking around him is truly a miracle. This dog has got to be released and returned to his mama.
Duke was kennelled for over 2 years and he's still sweet tempered and calm -- all the more evidence in his "favor"....meanwhile they let human violent criminals out on parole. Joel Steinberg is loose and has a job.
Debbie, I will say prayers for Lexie...Denise, I continue to say prayers for Duke...Mary, may God protect little Noel and bring her home to you safely...
You guys are right about DUKE. How in the world could that sweet boy be jailed for 2 years? Somone is for sure wrong big time. He's a sweetie pie. I'd be biting anyone who came near me! We need to bombard whoever, with letters and signatures. He's needs to go home to denise!
Any Vivi news? LOrdy, I hope they saw her today and someone nabbed her! Sweet girl needs to come back to California or at least get off the streets of New York!
Here in this night
let me embrace and not regret
the mysterious beauty of my humanity and Your creation.
Keep me in the embrace of Your Reality through the night,
and the day to come.
Surround me with Your silence
and give me the rest that only you can give--
Real peace,
now and forever.

Hi, everyone: just got back on after several days ... it's about 3 AM!! Anyway, went over and got my signature on for Duke, unbelievable, makes me ill, and need to get over to the Gratefulness Site to light a few before I turn in. I sure have high hopes for this weekend/next few days for our Vivi girl!! Sharon thank you always for the inspiration. Hello to all of you that I have been out of touch with... I am still here diligently, doing whatever I can quietly, Marnie, Keeping the Never Ending Faith in CA
Karen - great to finally put a face to the daily email that I look for as soon as I sign in. You've been unbelieveable these past months in keeping track of everything that needs to be done and followed up on to bring our girl home. I feel as though your emails have given me a group of friends who are kind and caring and crazy too. I don't know what we would have done without you these past months- even on those days and weeks when there was no news, you gave us hope and pulled us through by your faith and determination. You are one special person. Thank you
Just checked out the doppler for NYC and it looks like they are getting lots of rain. Hopefully Darlene brought plenty of that beer she loves... I know operation Vivi is going full force even at the moment... fingers crossed and lighting candles , keeping the faith , Christina.
Lets all think VIVI TODAY! Light some candles and say a prayer for her recovery...

Hey Kathy,
Who are the volunteers in the picture in the NY post? I'm trying to put names with faces.
Hi Gang,
ITs official....DUKE has gotten 2,000 signatures..Thank you to everyone that signed and passed along the info to friends..We couldn't have gotten them without all of your help. THANK YOU!!!!
denise and duke
Denise: Shouldn't we continue to get signatures? The more the better I'd think!
The guys on this blog are amazing! Now we need to send letters. Every so often put the info as to where to send the letters and what should be said!
Marty, I'd like to know who's who in the article
in the NY post too. I THINK I know who two of the people are..lol..Who's the guy? Maybe someone can tell us who everyone is.
VIVI TIME TODAY! LIGHT A CANDLE, SAY A PRAYER, WE NEED TO GET HER BACK!
It is absolutely pouring here in Massachusetts, even a bit chilly. This will be my last day of freedom and reading the blog because my new job starts tomorrow at 8am. Yicks, I can hardly wait to wake up in the dark. Maybe if I am not too zombie like in the evening I can read the blog. Good luck all you searchers, get that vixen Vivi..Lighting candles too.
Ruby , not sure if I'm right here but could the guy be Darlenes husband? I think they quoted him saying somethng about Elvis then said his wife carries hot dogs as bait . Well either way glad that the news goes on for Vivi .
Denise , glad the 2,000 goal was reached. Hopefully this situation will be turned around and he'll go home with you very soon.
Chrissy,
I think that is Gail T husband's who has said something about Elvis. Could be wrong though.
Marty, Yep, could be , now I'm wondering myself. I just think of Darlene as the weenie queen , so I assumed it was her. What a nice guy though to help out and support his wife :)
***This is something I learned about tracking Dogs*** from the internet. Tracking dogs find it difficult to track a scent if there are people around who are smoking because smoke covers up the scent. Just thought I'd pass this on.
Denise: I mailed you a letter for Duke.
OTIS: pls mail letters to the abuse attorney. We need justice for Otis.
With prayers for Vivi's homecoming.
Ruby,
Good idea..Denise Menendez

cool?? nice article - i am impressed :)
mr weenie is MIA in that pic :)
good guess though guys!!! weather is crappy here so i will be out tomorrow after work. when there are too many people in the same space, it gets too hectic and confusing. gotta run out in a few so all take care. i understand that things are getting done for vivi today. plenty of things going on to keep us busy :) she will make it!!!
Re Post article: unless there are legal condiderations, wish news reports would stop referring to Vivi as having "bolted" without explaining the circumstances that led to her bolting - makes it seem as if her escape was her own fault, instead of Delta Airlines, since Delta employees dropped (allegedly) her crate & released a very frightened dog. Vivi's a remarkable dog but she's not a magician and doubt Jil was in any way careless about sealing and securing Vivi's crate.
Denise: will you be able to enter the video of Duke into evidence? It's very powerful statement as to the sweet temperment & nature of Duke... especially since he has been confined in jail for 2 1/2 years. Can the complainant say that about his dogs, especially since he has received summonses about his dogs? Are you able to get support from your neighbors? Hope signatures go over 2,000.
Darlene! I'm sending you guys rain gear! How about a rubber raft or water wings?
Glad to see what Rick looks like and some of the rest of the troops.

Carla,
I would have done anything to get anything about the temperment of my dog submitted. They never even asked anyone anything about this dog. I think they heard pitbull and it was all over from there. I am sure his new attorney will get the video in if she can.
Denise
I agree, Carla. Why is Delta not mentioned. It's their fault Vivi isn't home in California. Lighting candles, keeping fingers crossed and waiting for the post that the foot soldiers have Vivi.
I wish they had mentioned that many sightings were verified by scent dogs...I think the article was a little negative. OMG, they referred to us as "kooky" Now why would anyone do that ?...
Kittens are spending the evening with me, they're used to the dogs now , except for Bunny Rose now and then barking in their faces. Pictures went to Little Shelter, and a local vet whohas oneof those cages in the waiting room for homeless babies
Margot, I was on the other blog, "not so little" etc. when I asked for the name and address of the abuse attorney..got it in here, thanks! ( o:
Nancy, I agree with you on the article being a little to negative . It sounded like people outside team Vivi figured she's dead, or long gone. I hate hearing that because we know she is out there. And yes, I would have like to hear about the tracking dogs scenting her to. I guess as long as people know about her we will just have to take it as it is. Glad word is stil getting out though and keeping the faith .
Denise: my heart goes out to you. Incomprehensible! I signed Duke's petition and what a sweetie he is! I hate injustice and prejudice on any level and I so feel for you. Carla and Susan, I so agree. I understand legal issues, but so wish Delta would be named. It IS their fault and they have not stepped up to the plate. Can anyone tell me how/where to get a copy of the article/photo in the NY Post??? Marty???? Darlin' Darlene???? US Open Tennis Tournament starts tomorrow at Flushing Meadows tomorrow (as all of you New Yorkers know...) any effect on searching for Vivi? Keeping the Faith and candles lit for all, Marnie in CA
Denise, sad commentary on the judicial system that Duke was not given a fair hearing. Duke's paid his dues and yet his spirit & gentle nature is unbroken, a testament to his breed and a far cry from the prejudicial sterotype brought about by people who don't care about animals and who have exploited & misused the inherently kind, loyal disposition of the breed. I hope your attorney is successful is obtaining Duke's release. Will Jeff Kolbjornsen from Elite Animal Trainers be able to testify on Duke's behalf? Good luck!!
Marnie - thanks for signing the petition
Carla - Jeff is ready and willing to testify..hopefully the judge will let him.
Everyone - if you would like to send letters of support send them to Denise Menendez

Denise, Dukes mom: denisem@optonline.net
Maybe someone could email her with the info she needs!
Denise, I'm mailing a check to you in the morning for DUKE's attorney/support. Watch for it! Start a DUKE ACCOUNT!
WE ALL AGREE, HE WAS WRONGLY ACCUSED AND PUT IN JAIL!
Checked to see if I could help. Appears it was resolved. Signatures are up to 2,054 now.
Many thanks to all for the prayers and candles for Lexie, she is here resting comfortably in her bed. Her front and back legs are starting to swell for some reason, so she will be going back to the vet tommorrow. Her appetite is great, however.
Hoping Vivi and all the lost animals find their way home soon and healing for all those who are ill.
Thanks again from Lexie and her family.
Debbie
Seek Him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth: The Lord is his name. Amen.
Father, We who cannot measure Your love, or the marvels of Your creation, ask You to use us as stewards of Your animals, as brothers and sisters in creation. We lift tonight the names and causes of these animals and animal lovers who are in need of Your help---Thank You, Let us make the choice to grow in love and faith.
