After lying low for an excruciating (to her searchers, at least) two weeks, Vivi resurfaced this afternoon -- not once, but twice.
Two passersby called the Vivi hotline around 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to say they had startled the whippet while she had been bedded down in the brush in and around Forest Park in Glendale. In both cases, she bolted. This is the same area where Vivi has been spotted multiple times in of July.
While these Vivi sightings are indeed welcome news, the hope is that searchers will focus their efforts on raising awareness of Vivi's presence among area residents through putting up fliers and posters instead of trying to "track her down."
Sighthound rescuers such as Michael McCann of Greyhound Amber Alert stress that in order to capture lost dogs such as Vivi, the goal should be to encourage her to establish a routine -- something she has not done to date. Generating too much activity and disturbing her at a time when she seems to be making herself at home could prompt her to move on into newer -- perhaps more dangerous -- territory.

Glad to hear she has been spotted twice in a familiar area. Did they say if she was limping at all?
Thank God, she's still out there! Gee... I wish and pray she's rescued soon, before winter anyway. She is an amazing dog!
I have been following this story since it began, I have 3 dogs and I would be devastated if something like this happened to any of them.. I pray every day Vivi is found and returned to her owner. Someone with patience will find her.
I just put VIVI and another missing dog, Beamer, on the prayer list this weekend...THANK GOD, and peace be still.
Seems like our SUPER SURVIVOR VIVI is finding home in the park...please join me in the CLEAR VISION of having Vivi trust a volunteer and allow herself to be touch, held and retrieved...bless all the "lost" animals wandering on their wonderous adventure, bringing all loving hearts together as the Divine Spirit safely guides them during their journey.
I think of Vivi every day. I can imagine how scared and tired she must be. I pray for her every day and I hope that she will be home soon. I live in California, I feel so helpless, I wish I could help find her. Please, we need more volunteers in the area before the cold weather. Everyone, visualize Vivi at home where she belongs.
The area looks huge! I hope we can get some other volunteers to help our gals! This is such happy news, I was bummed this morning after no news about Vivi, now I feel better as I'm sure we all do.
Maybe with posters etc., the people of the area will help by letting the gals put food etc in their yards.
Enough already!
Why don't the searchers make a concerted effort to get her? Waiting for her to decide to come to someone may have been a good idea, but it appears to be a complete failure.
Why not find her and dart her with a tranquilizer and be done with it!!!
In reality, the waiting game may have much lower success rate than people envision/hope.
Because the dart (especially in what must be her condition, now) would kill her. There are animals, and whippets are one of them who do not tolerate, injectible tranquillizers, or anesthetics. Enough said.
I also have the utmost confidence that what the searchers are doing is the very best NOONE could do better. Our endless thanks are due to them, not criticism. If they hadn't been posting their butts off for months in weather that you and I would probably cave in, the people who reported the Vivi
sightings today would not have known who she was.
Judi in Jersey, Beamer will be added to our list tonight also.
For anyone who is new there is a Vivi group at-

puzzled, you have got to be kidding me with darting her and finding her, gee if we could find her we would have had her, don't be so ignorant please, how do we dart a dog we have not seen. If you would like to come here and FIND her by all means c'mon in. Maybe you have special powers that will lure her right to you. You cannot dart her she will go inot traffic and get hit.
Debbie: Unfortunately some people have no sense when it comes to whippets and darts. Dont let this bother you. You have all been doing a great job, and we all know where you stand with this search. Progress is being made. We all know that Vivi will be caught when she allows us to catch her.
Maybe we can get our HEAD DART VOLUNTEER to hunt this one down, and dart them, hehehe....
We already discussed the dart thing about three months ago -- it's simply not an option, for so many reasons. First of all, whippets have very unique metabolisms. Like greyhounds, they have very little body fat and this affects how they handle any kind of tranquilizer. It's extremely trickly to do. Second, if you missed, all you would do is get Vivi to leave a safe area and she would be missing again. That's the problem with trying to catch or grab her. What we want is for her to settle into a pattern so we can establish a feeding station and then use a humane trap. This has been successful on so many occasions, I can't tell you. Anyone familiar with greytalk knows that it works. But you can't do this until the dog settles down into a routine. Any attempts to chase or catch her just jeopardize this plan, and will cause her to leave a safe area for a potentially unsafe area (not that she is really safe anywhere right now). I hope we are done with the darting thing. Sigh.
Any of the old "regulars" out there?
GIRLS: i think someone is just baiting you guys with the dart thing.... don't play into it.
and other good news today: DEBBIE SAVED A DOGGIE THIS MORNING FROM GETTING HIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!!!! she grabbed the little sucker and the owner came flying down the block, apparently upset and looking for him. GOOD SHOW, DEBBIE - WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU!!!!!
Wow, Debbie -- that's wonderful! Another little one saved during our search for Vivi.
Hey you girls in New York need to start a business. I will return your rescued pet for a week's worth of posting for Vivi. We could get those new foot soldiers in no time that way. Kind of a "ransom" for missing pets organization (hee, hee).
Well, she's back and I'm just about the happiest person in all of Sacramento today.
After my own battle with discouragement yesterday, like us all, I will continue to send out my Vivi visions. Send me an e-mail request and I will put you in the group.
God bless all.
I like your idea, Kathleen!
I definitely think some of the people might appreciate our foot soldiers' help enough to return the favor. Be sure they know about what you are all doing and how badly we need help.
I know if someone helped me save my precious Tinkerbell, I would probably figure out a way to post all of New York by myself just to thank them for being so kind.
Another suggestion. Could we make up a poster with the Vivi info and also a request for animal-lovers to help. We could approach people in the business areas and ask if they would be willing to put these in people's mailboxes where they work. That way we could cover not only that area, but other areas where these people might be traveling from to work. Hopefully, these people would share the info with neighbors as well (maybe put the tear-off tags with the phone number on the bottom and ask them to do this).
kathleen - rosa tried getting people like the pennysaver guys to help. we got nowhere fast cuz no one knew where the "stuffing" area was for the paper. it would be a home run also. i had a place and they told me they no longer did the flyer stuffing. let's see if anyone can help us on that one. i also mentioned to honi that jonh's 16 yr old niece and her friends may be interested in posting for pay. and - they live in flushing. perfect!!! awaiting her reply......
I am so glad that our precious little vixen was sighted twice yesterday - I love happy news - and, there is more - Barbaro continues to improve also - check it out: http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/08/barbaro_updates_34.php
Please keep Barbaro in your thoughts today -- he will have another cast change. Here is a quote from today's press release:
Doctors at Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital plan to change the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro later today. “Changing the cast gives us the opportunity to take new radiographs and evaluate the progress of the fracture healing and joint fusions,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery.
“His left hind hoof continues to show signs of regrowth and looks healthy,” said Dr. Richardson. The colt’s left hind foot, which had most of the hoof wall removed due to severe laminitis, has a daily bandage change for examination and treatment.
Renee,
A month after my first kitty Augustine died unexpectedly, a friend of my mom's called and offered me McGee. I hesitated at first, but it's been 3 years,(he was one at the time), and I've never regretted taking him in. Then a year later, George's sister called about the kitty that I named Minou. I was never going to have 2 kitties--thought one was plenty, but I've never regretted that either because they've been great company for each other,
'Nou is a little mama to McGee, always washing his face, and fussing over him. She's there when I can't be. You didn't seek these kitties out. Skully saw to it they were put on Grandma's doorstep. If they check out healthy... it could be a "sign"...
My Augustine "Gus" died because someone didn't believe that Persians shouldn't receive an injectible anesthetic... in spite of a previous reaction. There are some animals that should not receive injectible tranquilizers, or anesthetic. I can't believe there are people who are still talking dart.
The dart comment was someone trying to get all of us worked up , the good thing is that "most" of us are normal and already understand this. Darlene I had a good feeling something was going on late last week , I even said it in my post, not a psychic just a good feeling, I'm glad my feeling was right. Let all keep the faith, maybe after all this time she's found a comfort zone. Darlene , Debbie , or any searchers is this area that she's in pretty quiet or is this a pretty busy area? Seems like she's always near some kind of water or pond... SMART GIRL LOL , so happy to hear that the little ---- has been sighted... Lighting my candles tonight and praying hard !
sharon: whoever it is doing that is looking to get a rise out of it. firstly, they obviously don't know anything about whippets. secondly, they are not part of the vivi brigade NYC. and thirdly, and most important, LET THEM GET THROUGH US FIRST. end of story :)
hey, chrissy!!!! inside the park is quiet but busy. dense tree areas but very very nice. outside - very busy - a queens main drag. it's paradise is there - everything she could need to be happy. as i said before, i want to move in. so pretty and people are respectful. as long as she stays, she is perfectly safe there!!!!!
Wonderful news, thank you volunteers for everything you have done and continue to do. I have to admit the "dart" post got me worked up, but I have to agree, I think it is someone's meanness and/or ignorance one. Those of us following Vivi for months now, know this has been discussed. Many of us own whippets, greys, & other animals that shouldn't be darted. We are here because we care and I personally REALLY appreciate all of you. Being tacky isn't going to help Vivi. Thank you for keeping this positive. Its heart warming to know there are so many animal lovers out there that really do care, whether it's their animal or not. I find it encouraging seeing how many "good hearted" people there really are out there. We tend to only hear about the bad. Caring for an animal in need, says a lot about people. I’m very thankful to know there are so many of you out there.
Darlene, Do not wait for Honi to give the blessing for John's niece and her friends to start posting fliers. I just talked to Beth and Lois and we agree that what small amount ($300.00) we have left in the other Vivi fund, would be spent wisely paying these kids to help the cause. Get them started ASAP and we will forward you the money to pay them.
meri-lou: baby, i have other plans (wink, wink - nudge, nudge...) just waiting for her dad and mom to clear it and we are on our way. you guys just sit tight, ok??? thanks for the offer but hold on to it, my pet!! we all may need it for something else (wheels turning in my head....)
brooke - we all appreciate animals here. no doubt. we bust our butts for them and take silly statement for what they are.... GARBAGE :)
Darlene - I hate to say this because we all want to know about Vivi and where she is and is she okay, but maybe we need to be more cautious about giving even general locations on this blog.
I don't think a regular Vivi rescuer would have made this comment. We have to always keep in mind that people who might try to capture her for the reward money just might be watching and just might try something like darting her to try and get the reward.
Just a suggestion, but the fact that people with these comments keep coming onto this blog does make me wonder about this somewhat. Need to protect Vivi at all times.
i doubt it anyone is going to do that. firstly, someone in our group is normally around. secondly the parks are HUGE!!!!!! some of the foot soldiers do not listen to instructions - they keep going over there and disturbing the area. no, no, no!!!!
bonnie has said it, the dog trackers have said it.... and people are going over there. just bait and leave!!! sheesh....
Darlene - Sent you an e-mail. Read your mail please.
got it kath :)
Darlene,
I agree with you completely, and know that you guys would take them out before they could get to Vivi.
Having lost one baby to someone who thought they knew better than I did; I automatically react to idiots with injectibles.
Renee, just go see if you can help with the kitties. wink wink
Thank the Lord Vivi was sighted twice in one day. okay, time to make up for lost time little girl. I have complete faith and trust in our gals on the ground. You gals are awsome!! Hey there Ruby Shoes
Martha M...da red shoes are turning black. Too much dancing in them! heh How is your town in NY? My town is getting hot again!
I never did think too much info on Vivi's where abouts has been posted..The volunteers are on top of things and know how people react to specific places if they are posted. Their mama's didn't raise no dummies.Heh. Those gals are on top of things, sometimes literally. You go girls, go!
hello ruby!!!! whaaazzzuuppp????? you raising hell out there???
sharon: don't let those boobs get the best of you - you are much too good and intelligent from that crap.
Hello Everyone,
I've been out of town and then came home and got the stomach bug. I got out of bed yesterday to see ViVi was sighted two times and it made me feel so much better. Darlene, you guys are so awesome. I don't think we could thank all of the foot soldiers enough for everything you guys are doing.
Awww Marty, drink pleanty of fluids, no beer contrary to what a certain person might recommend.
Also, gator ade, which is pucky, but keeps your electrolites, (speeeling?) up and at em is good!
I haven't seen Marnie in a few days and I'm wondering if since you've been gone and left Marnie on her own, she's hanging in liquor stores and bars? heh. Maybe she's having SOMETHING tattooooed?
Welcome back, stay cool and rest!
hey, marty - no thanks are necessary, love!!!!!
and you guys see what happens??? if i am not in a bar to babysit, everything gets out of control!!!!
marnie, marnie - where forart thou, marnie??????
are you using my "noon somewhere" rule?????
Ruby,
Maybe Marnie got drunk at the bar and then went and got a tatoo of ViVi. We need her to show herself.
maybe she's in a body piercing place?????
Marty,
I have a friend who has 2 Greyhounds and a tattooed bracelet of greys around her ankle..Kinda cute..another gal had her Shelties head tat'd on the side of her leg.
I think a Vivi Tat would be very tasteful and maybe Darlene and Debbie will go for it some night when their prowling. Heh..
ruby: one never knows!!!!! stranger things could happen....
my sis has doggie paw prints going from her toes to her ankle. adorable!!!!! and you aren't supposed to get a tattoo after drinking due to thin blood. shoots that idea to hell...
ha!!!!!! good one :)
Hey Debbie and Darlene, always checking on VIVI and the TEAM, just wanted to say Hello and thanks for still being out there to beat the streets! Your awesome!
Just got an email (actually a form letter) from Byron Calame thanking me for my comments. Hopefully, he will write something about Vivi.
cherie: hello there, my friend!!!!! we're ok here. a beautious day!!!!! she's got be out romping around somewhere chasing butterflies :)
speaking of tattoos - I have a puppy paw on my left ankle - a bracelet tattoo of greyhounds would be very appropriate for my right ankle - and perhaps we could get a universal Vivi tattoo and have all those involved get matching ones with all the funds that won't be needed since she will be caught very very soon -
I'm not sure if alerting the media and having a story in the New York times is such a good idea right now... do we really want just anyone coming into the area looking for Vivi for the reward money?
Darlene, prayers and many positive thoughts for your Andi. She sounds like a tough old girl and i'm sure she won't let this get her down!
Darlene, Lots of prayers for Andi, she's got
a tough mama, s he will be fine. Great news
about our little vixen. Gang, just ignore the
woman/man who is writing about darting Vivi, she
/he is just trying to get Our " Irish Up"
Best of luck Vivi foot soldiers, lets finally
get this girl!!!
thanks, girls!!!! andi says hello today!!!! she is fine and laying right next to me in the sun. i appreciate the sweet words and you all made me smile :) NOW, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME GOOD NEWS????
i spoke with bonnie tonight. there is a full media blitz coverage happening due to the 6 month anniversary of vivi missing. PLEASE - contact bonnie before offering anything to the news and such. there are things that she may wish to discuss or not discuss with them. i told her about the NY times and she is willing to handle that. so, please, whoever contacted them, have them call bonnie's cell at 917-626-1374. we need people to stay away from the immediate areas as much as possible as she may spook again. denise flaime is doing an atricle tomorrow, so pick up those NY newsdays, girls. CNN,ABC,NBC,CBS,BBC, etc. and the local channels and papers will also cover the story as well. AND - KARIN is coming!!!! you all got your wish and bonnie has worked out a schedule with her. i do not know details but it will be handled as quickly as possible. so, that will put your minds to rest. again, i beg of all of you, please stay away from the park - those of you who have "assignments" in there are obviously excluded. i am not coming off as a hard ass, but we may stand a good chance this time and cannot mess it up. all of the foot soldiers know to keep in contact and not to go out of the "plan" so to speak. i hope i made everyone a bit happier - we are ALL working very hard to grab our girl. so, that's it. i don't have much more to tell you on those issues.
as you guys have been putting it, LET'S ROLL*******
get those big time prayers ready - we are going to need everything we can get :)
big kisses and hugs to all of you from me and andi
xoxoxoxox
darlene
Darlene - thank you thank you thank you for the greyt news - I have a very good feeling about this - pray people pray and light those candles
PS -glad that Andi is doing well - give her a big fat wet kiss on the nose for me and a big hug too
Such wonderful news. Karen's coming! Yeah!!!!!!!!
We will all kick up our prayers for Vivi and for anyone who comes to try and help her.
Let's all pray for Vivi to find comfort in a quiet area near food and water and stay put. The less noise and people looking for her at this point, the better. Anything and everything will spook her and there are dangerous places close by that she could move into. Maybe better to postpone looking under bushes as well....I understand that the man who saw her merely snapped a twig while walking and it spooked Vivi which is when we ran....can't imagine what would happen if someone was to actually disturb the bush she is hiding under....let's not try to find out.
Ooops!...mind and fingers don't keep up...meant to type, "....snapped a twig while walking and it spooked Vivi which is when SHE ran....
Need to proof read, but no patience!
that's right, irene!! you got it. stay out of the area and just try to be patient. and don't burn your houses down with all of those candles - FDNY does not make house calls!!!! hee!!!!!!
Patience is the operative word here....it's NEVER been my strong point, but, for Vivi, I am sure willing to learn and give it a try!
Please, Vivi, STAY PUT!
The breaking twig reminds me of the wildlife photos I was taking - wild geese on a pond in a preserve, well I rounded the corner, as careful as I could, walking gingerly, and took the lens cap off the camera - 1,000 geese lifted off in a flury and I missed the shot. I had spooked them. So much for being quiet and the perfect shot.
I guess our little Vivi has learned to be alert.
perfect shot of vivi?? never!!! after i fall over, crap my pants, i don't stand a chance!!!!
hee......
Darlene, are Rosa and Tina back from vacation? Hope they are well rested. (:
nope - still resting and enjoying life!!
Ha, ha! Thanks for the laugh Darlene....love the mental picture.
Yes Darlene it might happen , you'll be in shock. Are you sure you don't want some of the Depends I offered? LOL ! But don't worry the day WILL come that you will see her, and even pet her. Hmm I got another good feeling... Happy to hear the news of Karin coming... Keeping the faith ...
it's real, sedona!!!! look at what i do to myself and freak out, fall down....
can you imagine if vivi popped out? i would probably crack a tooth when putting the camera up :)
Just sent an e-mail to the Times. I did not mention where she was sighted, just that it has been six months and we want her to go home to her family. Great that Karin is coming. Will be lighting extra virtual candles.
chrissy - it'll be hard petting her from a hospital bed in traction!!!! hee!!! glad i could make you happy :)
debbie just said she needs more depends big time. she is very sloppy :)
I am wondering who Karin's back-up will be to actually CATCH Vivi. We can't just have Karin here for couple of days and then she says "she went thataway!" We've been there and done that. Is Karin willing to stay to conclusion? Also, will someone be alongside Karin who is ready to CATCH Vivi....rein her in and either use a net or a trap that will work?
Sorry, but I just feel this is our last shot to save this dog and I need to ask the questions that I have and can't answer....
This needs to be well thought out and planned...and I wonder if a little bit more can be shared with us.
I believe a collection for Darlenes future falls, hurtys etc might be in order. Klutzy woman is going to kill herself looking for Vivi. Her side kick, starts with the letter "D", sure can't throw her over her shoulder and take her to the closest ER. The cost of transporting her to an ER could cost more than she wants to spend and I don't want her walking there! You know her, she'd do it! haaa
ruby: thanks for the fans - they are groovy!!!!
great for our sweaty areas and are tangle free!!
What size Darlene? OMG we got good vibes here. Lets keep em rolling...
irene:
done and done :)
It must be fate. My e-mail to the Times didn't go through so they'll get no info. from me. Sending thoughts and prayers from CT.
since debbie pulls them up to her neck, i think XXL would be good :)
yeehaw!!!!!! it's a good night tonight, gal
going now to BBQ my ass a juicy porterhouse!!!!!
i will probably burn the crap out of myself since i am jinxed!!!!!!
later, pals :)
Have a great night Darlene, thanks for everything you all are doing to help get Vivi home. You are all awesome!
BEAMER is back home near Denville, NJ! After the owners put down a "smelly blanket" and other scents from home...he came out of the woods and walked into the owners arms! THANK GOD! Thanks for all of your prayers...hope Vivi is next!
GREAT NEWS about the media coverage...not sure exactly where Vivi is hiding out, but there is a big festival this weekend in Corona Park, might be very noisey too.
LOVE AND LIGHT TO VIVI, ALL LOST DOGGIES, AND THEIR WORRIED OWNERS, may they all find there way back to safety and their homes.
Judi - That is good news about Beamer. Thanks for letting us know.
I just told Barbara-Jean I have the perfect job I want when I go to Heaven. I'm going to ask God if I can stay at the Rainbow Bridge, be a caretaker there, and also be a guardian angel for all of the animals that are homeless, abused, or sick. I sure hope He grants my request. I have always been happier with animals than with people!
HERE IS AN UPDATE ON MADISON. MY LITTLE PRINCESS IS SICK RIGHT NOW.
---------------------------
August 8 - update
Just a quick update since I am sick as well, but John got home from the doctor. Turns out Madison has bronchitis. Luckily, we caught it very early so things should be ok. Keep her in your prayers for a quick recovery! More updates soon...
B+ for Madison!

August 8
The sickies have hit my house. Evan started on Saturday with a low grade fever, runny nose, sore throat, laryngitis, etc and by the next day I had it as well. It is so hard for me not to kiss all over Madison, but I know how important it is to keep the germs away from her. We've been washing our hands and using the antibacterial gel, but alas it did not work. Madison is flushed and has a low grade fever and her secretions have gotten thicker and greener. We are taking her to the doctor today to try to catch it before it gets really bad. I'm hoping that will make it a short illness. Keep that in your prayers as well.
The eye doctor visit the other day was a complete waste of time in my opinion. When we were in San Antonio, I was told by a doctor there that when Madison gets home, an opthamologist in an office would have what it takes to tell what she was seeing. That was not the case. The doctor looked in her eyes with a magnifying glass and told me that her eyes were completely normal. (duh) He also said that the problem is with her brain (double duh) I asked if he could tell what she was seeing and he said "well, I don't think much of anything really because she didn't squint when I shone the light in her eyes." I'm sorry but I do not agree with that. I don't think she is necessarily seeing normally, but she does occasionally follow and does seem to react to light. I will take the doctor's words with a grain of salt, but I definitely think he is missing what we see on a daily basis. She didn't follow his little strip of material, but at this point when she does track it is very inconsistently. I believe this will improve. We'll show him! He says "come back in a year." Well, ok.
