Vivi searchers in Flushing rushed to 164th Street and Pidgeon Meadow Road at 2 p.m. today when a resident called to say he had seen Vivi.
The man, who lives across the street from Flushing Cemetery, said he had been feeding Vivi pieces of Italian bread, which she accepted tentatively. He said she had a piece of string around her neck, and when he reached for it, she bolted back into the cemetery.
A family member who walked up at that point told the man that the dog was the "airport dog" pictured in the a flier posted nearby, and he promptly called the Vivi searchers.
This is not the first time this man has seen Vivi, who he was able to describe in detail. He saw her a couple of days before and suggested to his girlfriend that they try and catch her and keep her, but the girlfriend was worried that the dog was sick, because her eyes were filled with pus and she was extremely skinny.
Volunteers who are in the area this afternoon and tonight are asked to search and post posters near the Flushing Cemetery area.
Who tied a piece of string or rope around Vivi's neck remains a mystery.

Was he not aware of the fact there's a reward for her that he wanted to keep her?
So does this mean that she is still in the cemetary
Just an idea, but does the local law enforcement have any volunteer groups - Search and Rescue, Volunteer patrol, explorers, etc. that might be willing to get involved in the search. It seems like more people out there might help to flush her out of Flushing...
it's good she's at least coming near people...and staying in one general area. And maybe she really isn't terribly skinny, as whippets usually look pretty thin to people who aren't familiar with the breed...let's hope!
POST ON VIVI,VIVI EVERYWHERE SO WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME POSTING SITE.
Depending on how they got a rope on her and why it's broken off, I hope whoever it was didn't really make her weary of people. At this point she's not even going to recognize Bo right off. Please, please let them find her before anything else happens to her!
Come home Vivi!
I wonder if the lady with the little girl recognized that she had a string on her. it was never mentioned and that was just yesterday. seems the string is something new from yesterdays description. seems like someone might have had her last night.
At least now there is a focal point. Vivi is starting to repeat herself and go back to the same places. My bet is she will return to that mans home for food. I don't think a trap will work there but putting out some strong food will. She weakening now, I feel strongly that she will return there.
I contacted the local precinct there and talked to Sergeant. He said that they don't have any volunteer units patrolling the area, but they would have to dispatch anyone through 911. I told him that it's not an "emergency", but just thought that it might be a way to get more searchers out there..
I spoke with Laura, and she repeated that if you bring in more searchers, you're going to drive Vivi out of the area.
The ONLY thing extra volunteers should be used for is for putting up flyers.
Pamela I agree with her. The main thing now is to focus on Vivi's focal points ie the little girls home and the man that's been feeding her bread. If she's not scared away she will return there. It's the force of nature to go where she was treated well before.
Thanks, Gail ... hope others see this and understand how critical it is.
I'm posting my phone number in this blog as well so people are sure to have it:

or you can email me at pmarrache@msbx.net
Sending prayers for Vivi's safe return home QUICKLY!
Do the sightings include mention of a 'sweater'? Wasn't Vivi wearing a sweater in the crate when she escaped?
No, Peter, the sweater was most likely came off within days of her loss at the airport. It was just held on by velcro.
Peter it was posted that she no doubt lost that blanket as it was just latched by velcro. It's for the best, with the rain and snow it only would have froze on her.
I don't understand how it's possible for her to have "bolted back into the cemetary" unless that is where the entrance is and it was opened at that time. The fencing around that cemetary is tall heavy wrought iron and it did not appear possible for a dog her size to either crawl under, slip through or jump over it. So does anyone know if 164 & Pidgeon Meadow Rd is the entrance?
Also were the tracking dogs able to confirm her scent at this location? Please advise, I can be emailed at aboxa@aol.com or feel free to call me @718 816-9319. Many thanks!
Diane, Please post at vivi, vivi everywhere that is where everyone is. You will get better answers.
please don't get police involved as they will chase her and try to force her. I spoke to Laura today and she said to remind people do not under any circumstances chase her or move in quickly on her. This has to be taken very slowly.
I contacted police today, to see if they had any volunteers available for searching, not to have the police chase her. From the posting this morning, it looked like they did want more people out there to look for her. It sounds like they are going to just use some traps now, and they don't want too many people in the area. They don't want to spook her...
They need people to put up posters and hand out flyers.
AGAIN, Laura feels that too many searchers will spook Vivi.
Diane, according to the map that is an entrance.
What is the Vivi, Vivi Everywhere site where "everyone is." Please tell me! After all this time, and contributions I've made, I'd like to know if there is another site, too, PLEASE. Marnie
Marnie, look at the top of this page, then go to Denise's "recent posts" and pull up the Vivi everywhere one, that's where everyone is trying to post right now. Terrie
It's just yesterday's thread. Go to recent comments and click on any name who has made a comment on that thread and you are on it.
Denise has a new post up.
LET'S REMEMBER, WE ALL COME FROM DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE, WE ARE MADE UP OF COMPLETELY UNIQUE LIFE EXPERIENCES AND EACH OF US WILL VIEW THE SAME SITUATION DIFFERENTLY (NOT NECESSARILY WRONG OR RIGHT).
WITH THAT SAID, I JUST WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT OUR GOAL IS NOW, AND HAS BEEN, AND WILL BE - TO FIND VIVI AND GET HER HOME SAFELY.
We can do this! This has been held together for over a month now...let's not allow this site to become "personal" or more than it is - a site to come together in the search and rescue of Vivi. We are so close...let's keep it together!
I'm counting on each and every one of you - including you, Brian, please. Now is not the time to abandon this blog or this dog - put hurt feelings aside and let's move on. PLEASE keep the faith and focus on Vivi!
Lois, My check for $250.00 should get to you today or tomorrow. It's a Bankers check so you should be able to have the money available. Hope Laura's payment gets resolved. Thank you for undertaking this enormous task. Use the money for whatever equipment, help,or other items the experts think is needed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. The dedicated volunteers who are searching; No words can describe our gratitude. Hoping the out of state spirits are with you. Susan
would it be helpful to hire a private security guard to patrol some of the areas where Vivi has been sighted, even for a few hours a day (or night)? Don't know what it would cost, but even a shift or two for a couple days might help?
Well said Lois!! Bravo!
People, we need posters, lots and lots of posters. 8 1/2 x 14 should be large enough with the telephone numbers large enough so they can be read from a vehicle.
The posters can be sent overnight to me at my office

If you need to speak to me I can be reached during the day 9-5 NY time at 800-632-6040, ext 329. If I'm not available leave a message, I'll call you back.
We're getting close but apparently not close enough.
Lois..
I agree 100% with your thoughts! We all have the very same goal...bring Vivi home, As it now seems obvious that she is not too well (I think the "pus" reported in her eyes could be an upper respiratory infection due to the cold, wet and general harsh conditions). I have rescued many cats with this situation. My little Emily was born under a shed in my neighbor's backyard in a snowstorm. She had a severe upper respiratory infection and almost lost her sight. Vivi desperately needs help!
Time is critical here...please, we can all argue later...right now we have 3 dogs to save. Vivi, Sniffles and Biggie.
Everyone, please say a prayer that this is the day Vivi comes to one of us.
Irene Wilson
Please if Vivi is found today and god I pray she is for I fear she is a very sick little girl, Someone, anyone on this blog email me okay? I have to go for a while but I will check back ASAP! OKAY?
Ron...yes I will email you if there's any good news.
Thank you Sharon...my heart is so heavy...thank you
Just think good thoughts....Vivi needs our energy....today may be our lucky day. Hang in there.
I absolutely agree that the negative comments should be kept to after Vivi is found! They're not doing anyone any good and just causing tension. All the energy should be focused towards finding her. She's been a strong girl so far and surviving and thank God that the winter although cold could have been alot worse (those who are familiar with how bad NY winters can be!) We all hope and pray that today's the day and we will all be celebrating later on. Until then focus all feelings and energies towards the little girl and the great people out there looking for her. You are all great. Lois my check went out on Friday. I hope you get it today.
Sharon okay, okay (I'm a mess)...Let this be the day...and thank you again..Later
Now, I just want to add something to what Brian posted about Jil, Paul and Bo. I'm allowed because I was born and raised in New York City and on my birth certificate it says opinionated.
I met Bo for the first time this weekend, he's out there doing his best in our cold weather walking all over Flushing looking for Vivi and has always been the perfect gentlemen. When last I saw him his face was beet red from the cold but yet he refused a ride in a warm car so he could continue walking around searching. This is a man who cares deeply for Vivi.
I just want you all to remember that Vivi has been lost for over a month now and we are very fortunate to have been able to find where she has been at all. She seems to be staying in one area, she probably feels safe there.
I have never met Jil nor Paul nor did I know them prior to this unfortunate occurrence. However, just like you or I Jil and Paul have other obligations that must be met in their daily lives. They come to NY when they can, they help all they can but they don't know the area. They don't know Flushing from Fresh Medows, Kissena Park from Cunningham Park, Flushing Cemetary from Woodlawn Cemetary - they are strangers to this area. They depend on those kind hearted people who know the area and who are able to take time out from their busy lives to search for their beloved Vivi.
Please don't judge them for not being able to be here with us all the time - I'm sure that were it you in a similar situation out in California you would be forced to travel back and forth and not be able to stay full-time.
I'm positive that they all love Vivi just as we have grown to love her and pray each day and night that she is returned safely to them thanks to the kind, opinionated, pushy, don't get in our face New Yorkers.
To those who have been out there in the cold at all hours I applaud your efforts, to those who, from a distance, have assisted in any way they can, I thank you and to those who have nothing but opinions and not even constructive opinions, back off, we're opinionated New Yorkers and gosh darn proud of it. Oh, and yes, we have attitude big time!
As I sit in my warm house, hugging my dogs I am also saddened by the negative remarks of the family. Can you imagine the heartbreak they would feel searching every night and coming home to a strange hotel room if they had been here all along? You need love, caring and support from family and close friends to get through this. Also how many of us would really leave our family, children, homes, businesses in todays economy for 5 weeks? This commute is not a hop, skip and a jump. They are doing the right thing taking turns coming back. Vivi is feral now and she is not coming for anyone. She unfortunately is lost in a city that is huge and busy, unlike the town I live in. Negativity should be directed to Delta, as they are the ones that caused this nightmare.
I think If I was in NY helping I would put 10 bowls of high quality kibble around the perimeter of the cemetary. As I live in NE it is cold, water and wet food will freeze, but will thaw out during the day.I would then delete some of them every day and set up traps in a few locations with food. Eventually only have traps with food. The only way left to get her is by trap, or when she reaches the point she cannot go on, and lets someone get close to her. I have rescued more than 30 regular pet cats this way, either before they went feral or after. I know cats are different from dogs, but they all have the same survival instincts. It is not going to make a difference what owner is here.
Keeping people informed is key also. I am worried at her condition too, her time in this cold weater will take a faster tole on her. Lets all band together for her and her family, and hope she finds the strength to go on until her capture. I have nothing but praise for all the volunteers, they have outstanding caring and committement to Vivi.
This certainly is a heartbreaking nightmare for so many, that definately need closure somehow.
Bonnie, Diane, Brian, others -- I can clear my calendar for the next 2 days and come to New York to help with the search, if my assistance would be helpful. If you need someone to walk the area, camp out, whatever is needed, I can come. I have Whippets and understand their behavior, although Vivi is in a totally different state right now, but I just feel strongly I can help. If you want me to be there, call my cell at 904-234-5404 and I'll get the process started. If not, I'm sending a package today to Diane with some supplies and hopefully this will help.
Please Vivi - I can't take much more of this - come home now. God bless everyone and keep everyone safe.
Maggie Peterson from Florida
Donna, as of yesterday the searchers have a large bag of Pedigree kibble and also a large bag of Puppy Chow and have also been leaving very smelly cat food. Food is key at this point.
Excellent post Lois. Thanks for your focus and work and for trusting us all. 4AM in Maui, just had to check in. This blog will keep me jet lagged until I return back to the east coast.
A pleading for everyone to remain positive is a good thing and since this is a public forum it may have to be said again. I generally think the best thing to do with a negative comment is to not argue about it but just to skip over it and move on as if it were not said. It happens repeatedly in the agility news list- someone will start up on something and everyone else starts throwing in their two cents for and against, say how bad/good some judge is, usually taking one of two sides and saying the same thing over and over again and gradually getting personal then completely off topic. Then the moderator has to step in and tell them to move on. It's different but seems to take shape like this which is why I relate it.
Maggie, give Bonnie a call and see what she says. Her cell number is 917-626-1374. I trust you got my message on your cell from this morning. Thanks.
I am on my way to the airport, going away on a business trip. Just want to say that that I think many of us went to a dark place last night. We started the weekend with a lot of optimism when Laura got to NY. Sighting of VIVI lifted our hopes up and in the end, not recovering her last night when we seemed so close and learning about her condition was very depressing. When I woke up today, the rational side of me took over once again and I feel better. Facts are facts and these we do know: 1. VIVI is alive (Thank God). 2. We know the general area where she is and she has stayed around for a couple of days. 3. Awareness has been raised in the communities that she has been seen in. 4. We know her physical condition and can surmise that she has now gone feral and can prepare a plan for capturing her and getting her treatment (place a vet on notice from the local area for medical assistance). 5. Laura had given Bo a plan which I am sure is being implemented even as I write. 6. Between the fundraiser money and the funds that we raised, we have resources to buy whatever is needed to implement the plan. Lastly, and most important of all, there is a dedicated group of volunteers in NY who are committed to bringing here home. These people have the support of all of us out here who are storming the heavens and the universe with prayers. Slowly but surely, our prayers are being answered.
So lets start from here and go forward.
canned mackeral is very strong smelling and attractive to feral cats, perhaps for dogs, too. Any idea whether the food being left is being consumed (though no way to tell if by her, I guess.)
Lets hope they get her today. It's very cold here in CT 10 to 15 degrees below normal with wind also. The water I keep out for the feral cats is not freezing so she'll be able to drink if she finds water. Bless Bo, I don't know how he was able to walk around till 4 in the morning in the wind and cold, his endurance and devotion is beyond comprehension. He has risked not only his health but his safety in doing that. I'm sure he is working on adrenaline by now. Go home Bo, get some rest, you've tried your very best and now it's Vivi's turn. God speed.
According to the AWC site. Bo is leaving today and Jill is arriving tomorrow. This was an update from Paul.
Okay guys, what about placing an ad? Are we up to the task? Did anyone talk to the New York Daily to find out the costs? I've got the woman on-line with the Queens Tribune if we want to go for it. 1/2 page ad 4 3/4" x 13" (I think she said "cover") for $250.00. Would this be worth it? I am not from New York, I don't know if this paper is even read by anyone! All I know is that it covers the Flushing, Bayside and Auburndale communities. Do you think it would be helpful if we added a comment like "last seen at"? I wish I could get Bonnie (or someone that knows Laura's plan) to call me! 612-770-0930!!!!!!!!
That Vivi is alive and in a relatively safe place is certainly a testament to her will and intelligence. That she has made it until now means to me that she will make it until we bring her home. I remember a day after she fled the runway a typically somewhat pessimistic friend I correspond with said, she has no body fat shes not going to make it. I thought I am not giving up for her and then maybe she won't either. Here I still am (we are) and there she still is. Collectively we made that decision and it is working.
If you put "last seen at" in the ad, you might get the loonies crawling out of the woodwork. They would just hamper the searchers' efforts and could spook Vivi.
Lois,
that's a wonderful idea. I will send you $100 to help pay for the ad...I think it would help tremendously!
Can you post the address to send $ again? I will get my check out today!
thanks,
Nicole
Didn't Brian suggest a different paper or two that he said are more widely read. I seem to recall that.
I don't know how big Flushing is...but you could put
"SHE'S BEEN SIGHTED IN THE FLUSHING AREA!"
Karen, yes, I think it was called the New York Daily? I don't think this paper has been called to check on prices yet...Anyone volunteering? :)
BTW...I don't know who posted the link for Google Earth...but THANK YOU! that is THE coolest thing since sliced bread!
You can pan out over the area from JFK to the cemetary...it is AMAZING that Vivi covered all that ground. Please stay put Vivi. There are so many busy roads!
Nicole
Sharon W: Just what I have been thinking. There is a thin line between what will help and what will hurt. Vivi is in a relatively quiet place that she feels is safe. Staying there until caught is the best for her. Start adding the evil folks motivated by money plus the animal lovers that want to help or be the "hero" that catches her and she will either be driven out and get hurt or simply move on because she won't feel safe there anymore. Everyone wants her home but think about any potential negative results from plans/actions before proceeding and do what the experts have advised.
Thought I had better repost this...
Please send donations for the Vivi Fund to:

Thanks.
The NY papers that I think Brian mentioned are the New York Daily News, Newsday and New York Post.
The local Flushing paper probably only covers that area of Queens and may not be published/circulated often.
I can't call them -it is 5 AM and my friends already probably think I am nuts.
checking the NY daily news site now to get a #...if anyone else is calling already let me know.
Debra....the other side of the coin is NYC is HUGE and we don't want to be led on a wild goose chase either. Narrowing it down to Flushing area might be a good idea tho. I'm not from the NYC and don't know how big Flushing is. I just thought it shouldn't be too specific.
Good idea to research it and then check with someone who has the master plan as to whether posting where she has been sighted is a good idea. Maybe even Laura.
LOIS - I WAS IN THE FLUSHING TRIBUNE LAST WEEK. AND EVERYONE OF MY 6 BROTHER/SISTER IN LAWS SAW THE AD. I SPOKE WITH CRAIG THERE TO TOOK MY INTERVIEW. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE CIRCULATION. ABOUT NEWSDAY - THEY HAVE A LONG ISLAND EDITION AND A QUEENS EDITION. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET JUST THE L.I. EDITION. NO ONE IN QUEENS READS IT. I'D SAY IT IS WORTH PUTTING A HUGE AD FOR HER IN IT WITH THE BASIC AREA SHE HAS BEEN SEEN IN.
ok, found the NY Daily #...am calling now.
LOIS - NEW YORK NEWDAY (QUEENS EDTION);
N.Y. DAILY NEWS; N.Y.POST
THOSE ARE THE BIG 3
I WOULD SAY, GO FOR IT..... THE MORE PEOPLE KNOW, THE BETTER!!!!!!
SharonW: You're right NYC is HUGE. I'm in NJ and avoid NYC as much as possible. No offense to New Yorkers it's just that I'm not good at it and it's not enjoyable. The area she is in looks pretty nice, all things considered. But that's the thing...it is known where she is spending her time and too much information leading to too much activity will make her broaden the area. I think "Flushing area" is good especially if they're posted in the general area surrounding her whereabouts. I've seen so many bad people especially where animals are concerned- I do tend to expect the worst from them. This board has shown me that there are a Lot of good people out there.
I talked to Honi and she thinks that we should just "wait" to get some direction from Bo. I will email Brian to see if he can't help me get in touch with Bo...
If there is an ad in the paper please re-iterate that she is in the FLUSHING AREA. We can't have people just thinking its the JFK airport dog and no way would she make it as far as FLUSHING. Because she did. To my earlier question...Is the payment to Laura all set??
Info on NY Daily News...
1/2 page ad is VERY expensive...she said about $10,000
A four line text ad in classifieds is $88 for 8 days...about 20 words...each line over that is $2.75/day extra.
Add a picture to that it's $55/day extra for a pic.
she asked where the dog is and I told her Flushing area...she knew about Vivi and said she's seen so much press about her and asked if we're sure we want to place an ad since it's already all over. I told her the more exposure the better and the newspapers are losing interest because it's over a month now. And a lot of people still don't know about her...so that's why we want the ads.
I don't know...I think a little ad in lost and found isn't going to do much...a picture would help it...would rather have a huge 1/2 page ad...but for that price it's out of the question.
I haven't said much here but feel that I must.
Thank you Brian for your heartfelt post and it was a necessary thing. I DO know Bo and Paul and what Brian says about them is absolutely true. They are gentlemen in the first degree. Hell, we were in Seattle at our National Specialty and Bo and I went across the street for lunch. It was raining when we came out and he insisted on holding the umbrella and taking my arm to jump over a puddle. Maybe this sounds silly but it's just one example of how thoughtful and caring they are.
When I lost a bitch in Santa Fe NM, which is 350 miles from home, I drove down every weekend, spent the weekend searching and then drove home to go back to work. People have obligations that have to be tended to and frankly, as most of you know who have been out searching every day, it REALLY takes a toll on you mentally and physically. I totally agree with the pet detectives about her coming to anyone that calls her name. People aren't important to her now, survival is. My biggest hope is that she will go to someone who is offering her food. Since she already trusted the guy that gave her the bread, I hope he goes back.
Keeping the faith in Colorado.
WOW!!! WE DON'T WANT TO BUY THE PAPER, JUST PLACE AN AD. AND PEOPLE DON'T KNOW SHE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND YET. I MET HUNDREDS THIS WEEKEND. HOWEVER, WE CANNOT PUT SPECIFIC AREAS IN THE AD. POSSIBLY BAYSIDE/FLUSHING AREA COULD BE MENTIONED JUST TO KEEP PEOPLE LOOKING.
I think you should wait also. I could be wrong here but someone asked about surveillance cameras being put up, that's the first and only time I heard it. Brian has said some of the money from the fundraiser is being used for equipment. I believe they have something up their sleeve and are reluctant to spread it all around which is understandable. They are using the directions Laura must have left them, give them a chance to work with it. IMHO the money maybe better spent getting Laura back next weekend if Vivi is not found by than. (Boy, that was a hard sentence to write).
It's a good idea but I think it would also be a waste of money. Not many people look at those ads that are located in the classified section. If they are looking in the classified section they are interested in a job, not a lost dog. Also, the pictures that they run are about 1 inch square. Not enough exposure for Vivi. But, that's only my opinion.
At this point I think the proper word would be "capture", since we know approximately where she is.
I am still so puzzled about that rope around her neck. Someone put it there...what if they tied her to a tree or something and she broke free. She may be even more leery of humans if that's the case:( And still wondering if the man saw her collar as well?
Nicole
When I talked to Honi this morning, she was upset that the locations of the traps were posted. Part of that may have been my fault. I think I called and told someone to post that they were working on setting up traps (I won't mention the location again) to ease the fears about the pet detective leaving. If it is my fault, I sincerely apologize to everyone. My intention has never been to jeopardize Vivi's being caught. I'm crying again and I'm at work. I'm going to take a break. I have a meeting to go to and I had better not be teary eyed when I walk in.
I agree with Gail. If Laura can come back with her dogs and searchers can sit at the areas around the cemetery where she could get out as well as some going with Laura in the cemetery, we might be able to corner her and lure her with food.
Lois, I've lived in Flushing all my life, knew there was a stable but never knew where. I had to call my vet's tech to find out where it was and then I drove by and missed it the first time. As far as the yard, unless you posted the exact address nobody but a selected few know where that is.
Lois, if infact it came from you don't feel bad no one knew to keep it hush. I think there's more going on that we aren't aware of and I don't care as long as it works. Don't cry because you'll have as all bawling by the end of the day.
Lois -- don't worry -- this is a learning experience for all of us!
Is anyone having large colored posters made? If you are, please let me know where you are having them made and I can contact the place and give them my credit card information to have more posters made. I think that would be more cost-effective than if I have them made here and ship them. Thanks --
I really don't think we should be worried or upset that Laura had to leave. Her job was done, at least for now. I'm VERY glad that she came, and she was able to verify that yes, indeed, the sightings that have been coming in from this area of Flushing were real. It sounds like she has also generated a plan from here on how to lure and perhaps trap Vivi. She was never actually going to capture Vivi with her dogs, so once Vivi's area has been identified, it is really up to the people on the ground, day in and day out, to bring Vivi to safety. If the sightings dry up, then we might need Laura back again. But, Vivi has been in that general area for over a week now, and I think if she were going to move on, she would have by now.
I'm very confident that Vivi will be back in safe hands soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another week or two. I know that's not what everyone wants to hear, but it's reality.
Keep the faith, keep putting up posters and talking to everyone in the area about Vivi! That's what will ultimately get her home.
Here's a thought: When Vivi is captured, she will need veterinary care (subQ fluids, iv's, blood work, etc.) Wouldn't it be nice if Delta paid those expenses?
Vivi will need immediate veterinary treatment. Do we know any good vets in the area? Any suggestions?
I think what we need to find out is the closest Animal Emergency Hospital as we don't know what time she will be "captured" (good word BTW thanks). Most vets won't take a non patient animal at the spur of the moment. I've know doubt Bo's already done his homework on that.
Beth: I an give you the very best Vet hospital in the area and the best Veterinarian ever.
NORTH SHORE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

BETH - WE ARE MAKING THEM. HERE'S THE DEAL - AT LEAST PER MY CONCERSATION WITH BO ON SAT.
WE ARE BUYING NEON POSTER SIZE PAPER FROM STAPLES - I'D SAY ABOUT 3 FT TALL BY 2 FT WIDE; 5 PER PACKAGE AND THEY COME IN DUAL COLORS: BRIGHT YELLOW ONE SIDE AND BRIGHT PINK, THE OTHER. THEN WE ARE USING THE VIVI FLYER - THE PICTURE WITH PAUL HOLDING HER AND HAVING THAT BLOWN UP TO SHOW HER SIZE. HE SAID TO HAVE IT BLOWN UP FROM THE AREA OF PAUL'S WAIST DOWN TO VIVI. WE THEN GLUE, STAPLE, TAPE THE PICTURE OF VIVI ON THE POSTER BOARD AND HANDWRITE IN SCRIPTO MARKER *******"LOST DOG"; "$5000.00 REWARD"; (AND THE PROPER TELEPHONE NUMBERS, INCLUDING ROSA'S.)******** IT'S VERY SIMPLE TO DO BUT VERY TIME CONSUMING WHEN YOU ARE OUT RUNNING AFTER THE LITTLE BUGGER. THAT IS WHAT WE WERE ASKING EVERY ONE TO DO FOR US SINCE NONE OF US ARE HOME ANYMORE. THEY WANT IT SHORT AND SIMPLE AND DRAWING ATTENTION TO THE REWARD AMOUNT.
Jill, can Vivi possibly hold on for a week or two ?
I know that's a wierd question, but living in Calif and thinking about New York weather it just seems scary. I vacillate to being hopeful and scared at the same time.
I want to thank-you for all your very comforting blogs
Siri-Ca
BETH: THEY ARE OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK AND A HALF DAY ON SUNDAY....I AM ALMOST POSITIVE THEY WILL TAKE VIVI WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE....WHEN YOU CALL, YOU CAN ASK FOR MARIA, WHO IS THE MANAGER, HOWEVER, I DON'T KNOW HER EXACT SCHEDLE...
NOT TO WORRY, VIVI CANNOT GO WRONG UNDER THEIR CARE...THEY ARE WONDERFUL!
IRENE WILSON
Gail....Wouldn't they make an exception to that rule in this case? Her records could be faxed from her vet in California in a matter of minutes if needed.
Sharon, most vets will direct you to the nearest emergency hospital. I would go with Irene's suggestion if they are open all night.
Maybe someone can call North Shore Animal hoosp. and bring them up to speed on Vivi. I'd be happy to do it but they don't know me. Let me know if you want me to.
If it were my dog and I was from out of town I'd take her right into the city to the Animal Medical Center or out to LI Vet Specialists in Lindenhurst - both are 24 hour emergency care locations. My vet is also in the area - Petcare Animal Clinic and he is a sighthound vet - takes care of my 6 sighthounds. But, let's not worry about that now, let's devote our energies to finding her.
Ask the man who fed Vivi bread, to put out some cooked chopped meet...or some cooked chicken livers, WITH A BOWL OF FRESH WATER, she probably needs PROTEIN badly, and may be dehydrated. She may return to his door for more food. Can Bo or someone who knows her, wait on his property for her? MY PRAYERS are with Vivi, and seeing her safe return VERY SOON.
Regarding the large posters....
Does someone have any of those pics in hi-res? Or know of a website that has them that I can copy from? When I blow up the picture that I have it gets all 'grainy' looking.
I'm planning on making some of those larger posters today.
Nicole
EVERYONE, THEY ARE NOT OPEN ALL NIGHT...THEY ARE OPEN TILL I THINK IT'S 7:00pm AND OPEN AT 8:00am
THE NEXT MORNING.
I DON'T KNOW OF ANY IN THE AREA THAT ARE OPEN ALL NIGHT. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU CALL THEIR NUMBER AND THEY ARE NOT OPEN, THERE IS AN EMERGENCY NUMBER TO CALL. ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THE 'EMERGENCY' TYPE VET HOSPITAL IS SOMEWHERE IN NASSAU COUNTY.
PERHAPS IF SHE IS CAUGHT DURING THE NIGH, DEPENDING ON HER CONDITION, SHE COULD BE TAKEN INSIDE, WARMED UP AND GIVEN FOOD AND WATER TO STABILIZE HER.
AS LONG AS SHE IS NOT BLEEDING, I THINK THE INFECTIONS CAN WAIT A COUPLE OF HOURS TILL THE VET OPENS...FOOD AND WATER AND WARMTH ARE CRITICAL!
IRENE WILSON
Sounds good.......now let's capture her.
I KNOW IRENE'S VET TOO. THEY ARE GOOD. A FRIEND OF MINE USES THEM. IF THEY ARE NOT OPEN AT NIGHT, THERE IS ANIMAL EMERGENCY CENTER OF QUEENS - 24 HOUR FACILITY*****
187-11 HILLSIDE AVE.
JAMAICA QUEENS
718-454-4141
I HAVE USED THEM IN THE PAST AND HAVE THEIR BUSINESS CARD HANDY IN MY VIVI/SNIFFLES PHONE BOOK I HAVE IN MY TRUCK. MY NORMAL VET IS ACTUALLY 1/2 OWNER OF THIS PLACE. JUST IN CASE OF A NIGHT CAPTURE.
DIANE: DR BEIDERMAN?????? I LOVE THAT MAN!!!!! HE IS THE BEST YOU CAN GET!!! AND A STONE'S THROW FROM THE SEARCH AREA..... I ALSO HAVE GONE TO THE AMC IN MANHATTAN - GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE THERE!!!!
Siri-
Yes, I think she can. I'm sure in the last 5 weeks, lost in an urban area, she has learned to eat out of the trash. I'm sure many people leave food outside for their own pets, strays, etc. I've known of many greyhounds who were missing for months in New England in the winter, and who have been recovered very skinny but fine.
I also think that perhaps instead of being rushed to a veterinarian (unless she has obvious injuries or sign of infection), the first thing that should happen with Vivi is to be taken to someone's home and kept very quiet, fed small amounts of food water and allowed to reconnect with people. Take her to the vet the next day (after she gets to sleep in bed with someone like a real whippet).
We'll all have a party (probably a REAL one for the people in NYC, and a cyber-party for the rest of us), but Vivi shouldn't be invited. She'll need to rest and be quiet.
And about the phone numbers to add...do we add the numbers from Denise's post for the new flyer...
http://newsday.typepad.com/news_local_flaim/files/ViviNewFlyer.pdf
those numbers listed in this order on the above flyer are...
917-626-1374 (I believe that's Bonnie's #)
516-776-0923 (not sure who's #)
805-646-3151 (not sure who's #)
or from Diane's post regarding posters...
917-647-4848 (Tina/Rosa's #)
917-626-1374 (Bonnie)
516-776-0923 (?)
thanks,
Nicole
NICOLE: YOU HAVE TO TAKE A REG. PRINTED COLOR POSTER OF VIVI AND GO TO STAPLES. THEY HAVE COLOR COPIES ON SALE FOR $.39 EACH. TELL THEM WHERE YOU WANT IT BLOWN UP AND THEY CAN DO IT FOR YOU. I JUST DID THE SAME THING FOR SNIFFLES.
NICOLE: ALL 4 OF THEM*********
when they get done squishing, snuggling, and kissing vivi, no vet will be needed. :) i have a baby blanket in my truck to wrap her in. she will be as snug as a bug when we get her. just in case, it's good to think ahead - that's why i have their business card handy.
ok, thanks Darlene...off to get supplies
I just spoke to Bo, who is still in NYC wandering around the area before he leaves town. He is SO grateful for us getting Laura out there. He has great respect for Laura. He was concerned that we make sure Laura is paid, and I Lois and I will take care of that. Bo was not aware that Laura had not been paid for her first trip out. The Westminister Kennel was waiting for an invoice from Laura, which was why she wasn't paid. They are getting that all straightened out.
Bo asked us to do one thing -- when we get any bright ideas that we want to run with, please clear it with Honi Reismann, who is the point person in NYC. Honi's telephone number is 516-776-0923 (cell) and 516-378-9081 (home).
Trust me, Bo and Jil and Paul are trying everything and they are continually amazed at the support Vivi has and the love that she has generated.
Guys, your giving me a laugh. I've never known a dog to have so many "owners". Does Jill really believe we are going to give her back? I love this dog and I've never met her nor will I ever be able to pet her. She has become the most popular Westminster dog ever. Who won that BTW? lol
Right now I am focusing on what to get Vivi for a gift when she is back home in CA. Would it be a good idea to send her gourmet dog cookies or send her some toys instead? What kind of toys do whippets like?
Hi Darlene..
Geez, it's good to hear from you. You're still on my prayer list...thank you for all you do. You are unbelievable and we all love you!
Darlene, if she's got "pus" in her eyes as described, I think she may have an upper respiratory infection due to the cold, wet and harsh conditions for 5 weeks. As I said earlier, I have rescued many cats and kittens with this...their eyes crust over and they can lose their sight...it can progress to a lung infection and that would be bad news!
I think she will need hospital treatment, but I do think taking her in warming her up and getting her to eat food and water is critical. If it's during the night, she can wait a couple of hours till they open...
Darlene, I've known the people at North Shore since I was a kid (and that's many moons ago). They've all been wonderful and skilled vets for me.
Let's hit the prayers, people!
Irene Wilson
I wonder if the string- he said string not rope -could be a vestige of the coat she was wearing or even something that she just got wrapped around her.
Sophie...maybe a stuffed rabbit......she may have been living on real ones. lol
USE THE NUMBERS IN MY POSTING. THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE SOMEBODY CALL CALIFORNIA - THEY ARE TOO FAR AWAY TO DO ANYTING. TINA/ROSA IS RIGHT THERE AND BONNIE IS A STONES THROW AWAY.
Darlene, Mitch of Jack - I usually deal with Mitch, he's more familiar with sighthounds. Jack usually does felines but also dogs. Kathy told me I can't get any more pets because my folder is full - I told her to get a larger folder. Kathy's brother lives in the block where the little girl saw Vivi.
The third number in my list is Honi's cell number.
Sharon - you said stuffed rabbit? ha ha ha.... or maybe an animated rabbit so she can chase it around
Sophie...or maybe a T-shirt that says "I survived a New York winter"
Sharon - yeah, the T-shirt is a great idea!! :)
Irene, I am worried as it is. What you just said is killing me about a possible upper respitory infection. I am off today. I have candles lit. Can anyone consult with a vet. I was thinking maybe poisen ivey? PLEASE VIVI HANG ON! Rosa
If it makes noise and can be thrown Whippets like it.
A squeaky rubber french bread stick
The man who spotted her yesturday said she was pretty fast. Let's pray she is not as bad as we are all speculating. Grasping at straws here. Maybe her will is not letting herself be found, because she is waiting for Jill. That's tomorrow right? That would be the perfect reunion...
Jil will be in town tomorrow, yes.
Rosa see what Jill Hopfenbeck wrote to me, regarding Vivi surviving in NY weather It helped. Your right Rosa we just have to offer our prayers and the candle illumination. I have a large 5day candle burning at home
Siri-
Yes, I think she can. I'm sure in the last 5 weeks, lost in an urban area, she has learned to eat out of the trash. I'm sure many people leave food outside for their own pets, strays, etc. I've known of many greyhounds who were missing for months in New England in the winter, and who have been recovered very skinny but fine
If I am able to get posters made, where do they need to be overnighted to again? I looked but couldn't find...
Never mind...I found it!
One thing we're dealing with as far as the general public is concerned is that they think a Whippet is starved because it's skinny - they don't realize that a Whippet, lie a greyhound, is all muscle and no fat. That's why I brought Hub with me so people could see what a greyhound looks like and then explained that Vivi is about half his size. The people I spoke to yesterday actually programmed the numbers into their cell phones in case they see her. Most were people with dogs and children in the park feeding the ducks and they said they're in the park all the time.
Lois, the address I found for the posters is:
Diane Tamm
111 East Shore Road
Manhasset, New York 11030
Maybe the man who fed Vivi some bread can grill some hamburgers, hot dogs or some smelly food outside his home to get Vivi's attention. I am also thinking that someone could tie a long string on a piece of meat and put it out close to somebody's house. The person holding the other end of the string should hide in the yard and when Vivi sees it they should start pulling the string slowly to lure her into the yard and then close the gate.
Diane, Is your Grey a former race dog? I had a Grey for 10yrs, came from a track in Virginia. He was 12 when he passed. There isn't a day that I don't think of him. Rosa
Thank You Siri.
Yes Rosa, Hub is a former racer that I got directly from his owner/trainer in N.H. She is a friend of mine from a discussion board and was going to put him into the adoption system when she moved to Fl. Since I previously had a greyhound through Make Peace With Animals I'm preapproved and told her I'd take him. My first Greyhound, Tom, has been gone for 2 years now - he was 13 and just lost the use of his legs. Hubbard will be 4 on Friday and is such a happy dog - gets along great with my 3 Whippet puppies that I call the devil dogs (6 months) and my adults adults also.
Diane, One Grey and 3WHIPPET PUPPIES! You are in great company. My last whippet was rescue, he's been gone 3 yrs. My whippet Kramer I got as a puppy from a breeder he was alot of work and well worth it. I am looking into getting another. I say "Whippets are like potatoe chips you just can't have one!!" Good luck through the puppy stage... Chilli bone worked for me for chewing. Rosa
Rosa, I have 5 Whippets, a Greyhound and a German Shep plus 2 cats. Whippets are Thunder - 15 next month; Snoopy 4; Bonnie, Clyde and Phoenix, brothers and sister - 6 months; the GS is Fluffy 8 and you already know about Hub. Those are the dogs. Pookie and Spoofy are the cats that were rescued and have no idea how old they are. You're right about potato chips - in fact on the discussion board I'm a member of, basically devoted to Whippets, we use that phrase all the time. Sometimes we use peanuts instead of chips.
I wish someone would write in with some news if there is any. Get alittle work done..check the boards...get alittle work done...check the boards..it's a long day.
Diane, I am impressed YOU GO GIRL! ONE QUESTION: How do you manage to keep a blanket or bed cover's on you? LOLOLOL
Who needs a blanket with all that body heat.
I've been lurking on here for several days, hoping for good news - just wanted to respond to the posts that suggested that when Vivi is found that she shouldn't go immediately to a vet. I do Golden Retriever rescue, and have dealt with several starvation cases over the years...this dog will need immediate vet care, as she will mostly likely be dehyrated and will need to be placed on an IV with anitbiotics. Starved dogs have to be handled very carefully, as their instinct is to wolf everything down in site when they are first rescued from their situation...but their digestive system is in poor shape and cannot handle that. Within a couple days she will then refuse all food again, which is of course, counterproductive. Starvation dogs need to be offered frequent, small meals of a very bland food such as the prescription ID canned food, just a tablespoon at a time, and small amounts of water. I'm sure her owners will receive great medical advice when she is recovered, and no doubt there are several emergency veterinary centers nearby. Now let's hope there is good news soon!
Whippets love anything they can drag around with them while squeaking the entire time. My two Whippets, Michelle and Trevor, have relay races with their stuffed toys. They have so many now that they have 2 laundry baskets full of squeaky toys -- and they manage to get all of them out each day and throw around the house. And, they are definitely bed hogs. Trevor gets under the comforter, twists around and around, and finally makes what we call an "igloo" with his little nose sticking out. Michelle is happy just taking over your pillow. And, don't even get in their way if one or the other wants in the Cozy Cave. It is OK for Trevor to walk over Michelle to get into the cave, but Michelle butter not even think about trying to get in if Trevor is there - he pitches a fit, but finally caves in after grumping at his sister for a couple of minutes.
They are a hoot - I need to get me some more chips!
Maggie
Kathy, thanks for the advise but they will not only need an emergency vet but they will need a vet that is familiar with sighthounds. Believe it or not, even in NY not every vet is familiar with the respiratory system of a sighthound. You just have to find the right vet. There is plenty of water around in Kissena park - there's a man-made pond. Not the cleanest water in the world but water nontheless and since she's been sited in the park I would hope she found the water, the ducks, the geese, and the squirells - lots of squirells.
I know Bo was out this morning but I wonder if anyone's looking for her now. People are at work so I expect it's quite around the neighborhood.
Gail, there are people out looking for her right now. I just got off the phone with Rosa. They are out there and they are looking.
Thank you Diane. It brings piece of mind to those of us that can't look. I hate being an arm chair Betty but it's the best I can do.
HEY GUYS - Going forward I think everybody should continue to post anything that is not useful to the searchers on just one blog (Sunday Vivi sighting Flushing Cemetery). All the important information should go on new threads and this way the searchers and volunteers can get up to date information without having to go through a zillion useless posts.
Each new blog should have useful info like - a address for Lois where checks can be mailed to, also the phone numbers that have to be on the fliers, important contact information etc. Also, a post reminding people where to post non-search related threads would be useful.
One of you can contact Denise Flaim to get moderator rights to the blogs so that you can add, edit or delete posts that are not in the appropriate places.
If you change location of the blog make sure that the last thing you post on the old blog is the location of the new one so everybody can follow
Diane, excellent point about the uniqueness of sighthounds. Thanks for providing the updates when you can, its appreciated.
I'm off to get a dog ready to go to his new forever home - at least for this particular dog, today will be a good day. I hope to read later that it will be for Vivi, too!
I know this is not any help to the searchers, but I have know Jil for over 20 years. We grew up together riding horses and raising dogs (German Shorthairs) and I cannot think of a person more loving of her animals. I have met Vivi and she is truly Jil's baby. She has her own room in the house that is just Vivi's. Please continue the search and bring Vivi home. I would be lost without my dogs, Kate and Max.
THANK YOU! I just wanted to let you know that I went to the PO box this morning and lo and behold that baby was LOADED. I am depositing the checks today which bring the total in Vivi's checking account to date to $4,000. I am quite sure that there will be more in the mail tomorrow and Wednesday and have also received emails from individuals that have said they were also getting their donations in the mail as well. I am working on a list (which I will post this evening) as to each individual amount and who sent it. I will only be listing initials, the check amount and the state the check came from. This way, you can check to see if I received yours.
This is such an incredible act of generosity and love. I am turning into such a BABY. I cried when I was opening the checks. It amazes me how much people love a dog they have never met...You guys ALL ROCK!
Has anyone posted about the recent sighting today?
Lois, you are so sweet. Thank you for taking on this task. We all appreciate everything you've done.
Laurie-
Lois your making me cry. Everybody is walking by and asking if everything is alright. Now I'm laughing and crying and said "everything is Great"
I knew you this would happen.
ROCK ON LOIS, THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS
Siri
VIVI IT'S TIME TO COME HOME
Siri
Robin, thank you for posting. What some people don't understand is that even though Vivi is a show dog, at home she's a regular dog, like yours or mine. She plays outside, rolls in strange things when she has a chance, eats strange things and basically lets her hair down. But put her in a show ring and she's a completely different dog. Don't let my dogs here she has her own room, they'll want one of their own although I do leave the air conditioner on for them during the summer when I'm at work and I do leave the TV and a light on for them at night. I too would be lost without my dogs - all 7 of them.
A sighting of Vivi was just mentioned ...Was there a sighting of Vivi today (Monday)? I am following this story of Vivi with great interest, having owned a Greyhound for 12 years myself.
Shira
I'm with you Siri. I have so much writing to do, but can't seem to concentrate or get anything accomplished. I keep stopping to check this site. As all of us, I'm living for that post that reads "Vivi FOUND." Let's home it's today!!!!
Thanks so much to all of the searchers. And, Lois- your post was great. This has totally restored my faith in the human spirit. And all because of one little Whippet named Vivi!
Let's keep "storming the heavens" people.
Wrong Picture!
I was looking for photos of Vivi and found this article at CNN...
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/16/missing.dog/
this is NOT Vivi...it's an old article but upsetting to see the wrong photo nonetheless.
Nicole
Kim, there was a sighting today? I haven't read anything...if you have details can you post them?
thanks,
Nicole
Brian Rosenberg has come through again. He has arranged for ads to be placed in NYC publications. On Wednesday, an ad will run in the NY Post, and on Thursday, an ad will be in the Queen Courier.
I would like to add that in addition to the donations and especially the hard work- often coupled with huge donations- which are a great act of collective kindness this has also been a rare act of mutual trust in a world where people are scamming and stealing from each other seemingly every where you look. Now if Vivi can just pick up on that somehow- and Biggie and Siffles.....
Brian I hope you become a rich executive producer after you manage the movie made about this. You have been invaluable.
An excellent 24 hour emergency hospital is "The Animal Emergency & Critical Care Center at Long Island Veterinary Specialists". It is about 20 minutes from the Bayside Flushing area and very easy to get to. It is on the service road of the Long Island Expressway off exit 46 in Plainview.
I have a ridgeback, and my vet who takes care of many sighthounds speaks very highly of them. I called them and there is care 24 hours a day. The phone # is 516 501-1700.
I also think that someone should be cooking up some great smelling food. That may entice Vivi out of her hiding spot.
Beth any chance of gettiing the same ads in the Queens edition of Newsday and the NY Daily News. The people that we're trying to attract read these two papers, rather than the Post which is for the Off Track Betting set.
Go read his resume on the Garden City Hotel site. I bet he would have no problems producing a movie.
Now we just have to find that ellusive starlet and get her fed and cleaned up and back home.
That same hospital did cancer of the mouth surgery on my previous greyhound - Dr. Marino - removing his upper teeth from eye tooth to eye tooth with absolutely no sloping of his muzzle.
I think I pressed the wrong button. I have a few questions about the posters. Should they be Horizontal or Vertical? Names with the phone numbers? Info. on 1 or both sides? Vivi's picture location on the poster? I'm a real novice at these things. Waiting for good news. Susan
someone mentioned cooking up some great smelling food, and it made me think of raw green tripe - anyone who feeds their dogs raw knows how smelly the stuff is, and how crazy dogs are for it! A pet food store that sells raw food for pets might have some, just a thought...it would be great in the traps...
Susan, posters should be verticle, one sided because they will be posted on poles, etc., I would put in big, bold letters on the top, LOST DOG and under that REWARD $5,000, under that a picture of Vivi and under that - if sited call immediately - and put the numbers. Thanks
and DO NOT CHASE HER
I think you just need something stinky like fish and liver to attract her. I mean specialty food or raw food for pets would be wonderful but it might just be one more thing to do for busy rescuers. Not dismissing the suggestion though it certainly wouldn't hurt.
oh, I wasn't trying to make more work, it's just that the tripe is way smellier than fish or liver so I just thought it might be another idea...feeling frustrated I can't help more, I guess. I'm sure they are putting out good stuff for her already....
under A Note From Bonnie, there is a post that says there were two more sightings today, that is great!
Thought I would post Lois' address again for
donations as I said I would from time to time
for new bloggers:
Lois Baker
PO Box 211604
Eagan, MN 55121
The money will go to good use for lost pets even if we find Vivi before we've used it up! Terrie
I know what you mean.
More sightings?
Denise has a new post up
GREAT. She is being sighted more and more. She is getting comfortable in some den or drainpipe in that cemetery. She will be coming home now that she isn't running 2 miles a day.
Apparently there have been more sighings: This was posted by Chrissy under one of the other sections:
Yes their were sightings today one this morning and one about 2 hours ago . They DO have people looking as we speak . I honestly don't know anything else at this time and wouldn't want to say anything thats not true or incorrect . I beleive she was seen right around the Cemetary again. She must have a Vivi spot somewhere in there! I'm sure you will hear about the sightings soon , but yes she was seen again. I guess the 2 good things here are that yes she's still alive and will be fine once she's caught and gets the meds and stuff that she needs. The other good thing is that she is still in the same area.
With regard to the ads -- these were not comped -- Brian is paying for these, and they were quite expensive. We checked into the Daily News and Newsday, but they are just prohibitively expensive. All we could do there is a little missing dog line ad, which I don't think would be useful.
This new sighting is frustrating in that twice now she has come really close to someone and then they try and grab her and she runs. I wish these people where a little more dog savvy and knew how to gently lure her to them!
You're correct Beth. Those little doggy ads in Newsday are a waste of money. Brian has covered the Queens Tribune, what about the Queens Cronicle also - they are the most read local papers that come out weekly.
I am wondering WHY there are not searchers at all exits to the cemetery, including the holes in the fence? Is this not possible? Are the fence bars wide enough that she can go in out and anywhere she wants to? Will someone PLEASE let me know if they need more searchers??????? I am about 4 hrs away, but can possibly arrange to go if need be. I am free on weekdays if that is when they need people. Is there someone I can contact to see if they need searchers? My email is bellacani@aol.com, 607-592-0544. I have Italian greyhounds and have been involved in many searches. Thanks.
I'm repeating myself but if only Bo had those darn night goggles he might have seen her in the cemetary last night before she had a chance to hide. I felt last night she was locked in there, it was that old gut feeling that kept me up most of the night. I just wish one of our searchers can at least see her.
New post from Denise:
Vivi was sighted again today at 12:30 wandering on the street in the vicinity of Utopia Parkway and 47th Avenue. The caller said she allowed him to get close, but when he reached out to grab her she bolted toward Flushing Cemetery and ran along the cemetery fence line toward 162nd Street.
Another woman called to say she saw Vivi in the cemetery last night, but did not think to call searchers. Presumably locked in the cemetery overnight, Vivi must have escaped this morning when the gates reopened.
From the latest, It sounds like she may of got locked in the cemetery last night when the gate closed. Was hoping someone would be at the gate this morning when it opened. I heard someone blocked a fence area yesterday that she might of used to slid under to go in and out of the cemetery... I hope someone un blocks it for her... so she doesn't get locked in or out when the gates close.
Hopefully people are putting food and water out for her near the cemetery.
Where are we suppose to be posting? I'm reading new posts all over the place.
Shouldn't we be posting under Bonnie note since there is a new post to replace that?
The last post there said to keep posting here, so here I'll stay. Now if only Vivi would stay...
Gail I'll just fallow you. I am lost!
I think they want us to not post to the latest Denise article unless it contains information helpful to the searchers. I wonder if we should post to the one just below the most recent one!
Gail/Rosa -- if you decide to move let me know. Are you taking a break or are you still out there?
I was under the impression that when there is a new POSTING that we go to the last post beneath it to blog anyone else remember that? so in that case it would be Note from Bonnie. HELP
Beam me some where Scottie!
Beam me some where Scottie!
Sorry, no help on the way, the help is supposed to be out looking for a little girl that is very good at hiding. Rosa, I should be having a bunch of posters, tape and flyers delivered to me at work tomorrow - we'll have to arrange to meet on my way home tomorrow. I'll call you when I receive the package(s).
I just want to know how will they ever capture her, what can be done safely?
Lillie, if everybody knew the answer to that we'd all be in 7th heaven.
Remember the old fashioned dog catchers, did they have any tricks...?
Most likely, it will have to be someone who she allows to come up to her. Or it might be a trap, but that is less likely. Or she may get into a backyard, and they can close her in. These seem to me to be the most likely scenarios. I just wish we could confine her -- I'm always worried about traffic with these dogs.
Find her, have somebody get down on the ground and roll around like a loon to get her attention and while she's paying attention to the loon come up behind her. I have no idea - play it by ear I guess.
I have a question. If an area has been blocked by the cemetary fence where it is felt Vivi may have been going through, has anyone tried setting traps at that location and opening the fence area back up? Was this area near the 162nd street part she was seen last running toward?
Hope someone answers my questions. Just curious. Seems like a good location to maybe trap her.
Kathleen Stephenson
Lure her with food, lots of smelly, tasty food. Throw a tidbit to her, then another, then another a little closer, and a little closer and yet a little closer, then a whole bunch of food - gotcha
Someone already mentioned this, but it sounded like a good idea to spend some of the money collected to purchase some of the equipment needed - night goggles, even a humane animal trap - I know they were having difficulty setting the one that they have. It would be a sin if Vivi actually went in and then the trap didn't close properly.
The most important thing is to keep putting out posters and talking to people in the area. We are getting sightings because more people are aware that she is there -- to me, that's a great improvement from where we were. Aren't we glad, to some extent, that she's no longer at the airport? Remember how frustrating that was? We had no ability to do anything during that scenario. At least there's something we can do now.
I can guess that the owners and their experts have some plans on how to capture her. Although there just isn't one way for it to happen.
It would be wonderful if she could gain enough trust in the fellow that fed her bread and his girlfriend so one could feed her and the other could quickly get a slip lead around her neck. But that is silly, because why on earth would a normal couple be walking around with a slip lead in their pocket?
Us dog people think it normal to always have poop baggies, dog treats and slip leads in our pockets!
I find it amazing that she made her way to Flushing without incident. Maybe that lady who saw her way back in the beginning going into that abandoned building actually did see her - it was late at night, she would have to move at night since she wasn't seen and traffic in that area is very heavy during the day. Are we sure Vivi isn't a New Yorker.
I think from now on, Vivi will always be an honorary New Yorker, wherever she lives. She's sure proved herself to be street-savvy.
I'm sure if one of our searchers spots her they'll know what to do. I wish I could go there, I tend to attract every homeless cat and dog around. Last year a cat left me a litter of new born kittens under my grill in the middle of winter. Last night I went to let my dog out and sitting at my door was the biggest raccoon I ever saw. During the summer I was sitting in my living and when I went to look out the window there was a possum on the window sill staring back at me. I don't live in the country I'm right by the ocean. Come to Connecticut Vivi my doors open!
The street she was last seen headed to. 162nd is that a buisy road or residential? Anyone know
I have Whippets and here's my suggestions, have worked for me.
You need to get down on the ground, have food available, don't make too much effort trying to get her to come to you - just softly coax her towards you, make a clicking noise, drop some food in front of you and let her eat it without reaching out for her. Keep doing this until she doesn't seem scared or pull back when she sees a hand coming (very typical Whippet behavior). I would be on the ground, acting like I wanted to play, somethies whimpering or crying noises help. The key is to let her get close enough to you and keep her there for a period of time without reaching for her. See if you can get her to sit down, or get comfortable that she will let you pet her. Maybe have a toy or rag that you can see if she will play keep away with. The other thing I do is have treats, and run in the opposite direction until they catch up with me, but usually that is into the front door of the house which I immediately slam once they are in the house (you know, it's a good thing these guys are the most lovable dogs I've ever had, cuz they sure are a pain if they ever get out!)
The minute you move towards her or tried to grab her, she will back up so fast. If you can get her distracted with eating out of one hand, and with the other come up from behind and slip a noose around her neck - she probably isn't going to like that, but other people need to be off in the distance that can come running to assist once she is caught.
My offer still stands - I can be there tomorrow morning if anyone thinks I can be of help.
Maggie Peterson from Florida
When I leave here at 5 I have to go do a job for my own business. I trust you good people will have wonderful news when I sign on later tonight.
I didn't see the post that said she had "pussy" eyes. I thought it said "puffy" eyes.
Jill is going to be in NY tomorrow, right?
Linda LeClair

Jil will be in NYC tomorrow.
Hello Linda, yes so it says. Glad to see other springer people here.
Maggie:
Have you tried caling Bonnie at 917-626-1374 or Honi at 516-776-0923/516-378-9081. They are probably out searching for VIVI and have not had a chance to go online so they don't know of your generous offer. I envy you. I wish I could go and help out in person.
Can anyone tell me how safe it is for a person to be wandering alone in or about the cemetary and the area that she is in?
I think Liz has a great idea about the tripe. You can smell that stuff a mile away, even more than fish. We seriously can't even feed it inside here, the smell is so strong we feed it outdoors. How do I get it to one of the searchers/people putting the food out tonight? I could get out to that area by 9 or 10 tonight with some cans if needed.
Linda, the cemeteries in this area are safe (unlike places such as New Orleans). They are also generally only available to the public during the day. Most close at 5PM.
Yes - I called Bonnie this morning and she didn't think it would be worthwhile coming to NY unless I wanted to post flyers, but that might have been before the sightings today. Another Team Vivi member from California and Whippet owner, Laurie, has been in contact with me and she is ready to come out, too. She suggested we work together as a team so we can stay out late at night. I don't know that we would have any better luck than any one else on this group, but I'm willing to try, hopefully Laurie is, too.
We also don't want to get in the way and need to honor the wishes of the owners, organizers, and Laurie (tracking Laurie). So, I'll hang in here and assume that she will be caught soon. My offer stands.
Maggie
This person posted to craigslist asking for the flyer -- if you have it, could you email it to him? Thanks
jIs there any chance someone might be able to send me a copy of the Vivi Flyer? ( flyer for the missing whippet dog, last seen in Queens as far as I can put together. )
Thanks for your time.

Well I think everyone is CONFIDENT that Vivi is staying in the area and that we'll get her SOON. Brian thanks for keeping us in the loop. If you were to stop updating us now that would not be good for any of the Volunteers or people involved in getting Laura out here this past weekend. We do NOT need that , we need MORE volunteers if anything for the posters. Keep in mind that their are a very FEW people who have said things about the owners, we DO feel Bad for them and we all want Vivi to come home. Since last weekend when everyone found out Vivi was in Flushing everyone has helped one way or another. Also , Paul came , then Bo came now Jil will be here tomorrow. They ALL know she's around and now that they can have access to the areas she's been seen in I think they'll be back as much as needed until she's caught. My point though is not everyone is negative just some people !!! So no need to deprive us for something a few people are saying, many of us feel the total opposite of their remarks. Since Vivi is not in the Airport anymore the owners are here to find their girl and that speaks for itself. I have a strong feeling she'll be caught this week it just has to be someone who knows dogs well enough to lure and take a soft gentle approach. Leaving food out is a VERY good thing , this way atleast we know she's eating something and thank goodness their is water in that area. Last night someone said they left a few plates of food out , does anyone know if that was still there today? Good Job everyone , even if your in Alaska the power of all the people wanting the same thing makes me think everything will be alright. :)
Is this where we are supposed to post... i've heard different things... very confused.
I, too, am sooooo confused, (yet again), about where we are supposed to be posting! I'm staying here on this post until I hear otherwise. Vivi, why don't you stay put, too??? Gail, thank you so very much for your e-mail to me earlier today (3/20)! Blogheads, how do we help Brian with the cost of the ads in the newspapers? I'm assuming those were approved by Paul, or Jil, or Bo since Brian is in touch (obviously) with them and I trust, respect and appreciate him implicitly.I just worry in my heart about the lunies and the nut-cases out there who might jeoporadize the search and what has been accomplished if too much specific info is given out. If appropriate, let's get Laura back ASAP. On a light note, I agree and hope that Brian gets the movie contract when Vivi gets home... picture all of us Blogheads walking down the Red Carpet at the Academy Awards with Vivi and her family as Brian accepts his Oscar for best documentary and Vivi gets best actress!! We'll have to get her a new designer sweater folks!! Which designer shall we commission?? With love, positive thoughts and candles lit, Marnie in CA
Is anyone going to Vivi's area and leaving food and water for her tonight?
Marnie I love that visual. All of us walking down the Red Carpet with Vivi. Great Thought
Siri
I wonder if Delta would buy our plane tickets so we could all get to the awards presentation? lol....just a thought
Sharon that's the least they could do. LOL
Siri
I am going to sit tight for tonight. I am only 4 1/2 hours and my husband and I are able to free up some time if needed.
I just have a strong feeling that they, Vivi's owners/breeders etc. have things under control.
We will be willing to put on the "long johns" and spend several days out wandering with our hot dogs, slip leads, etc.
Rest well, Vivi, you will be home soon.
Linda
You guys all know Delta will never do anything more except maybe pay for Vivi's plane ride home. This is not the first time Delta has messed up royally with pets. I hope it will be the last time though. With all the news coverage, they just might clean up their act. We can only hope.
HEY GUYS! HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS ABOUT POSTING AND WHICH "THREAD" TO USE! WHENEVER THERE IS A NEW POST, LEAVE THAT POST OPEN FOR THE LOCAL SEARCHERS TO USE IF THEY FEEL THE NEED...THE REST OF THE GROUP CAN "MOVE UP A LEVEL". DOES THAT SOUND OKAY? I'M GETTING READY TO POST INITIALS/$$$$ ON "A NOTE TO BONNIE" - WE'LL LEAVE THE MOST CURRENT POST "VIVI STILL FOOTLOOSE" FOR THE LOCAL SEARCHERS! I HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE TO YOU ALL.
Lois -- I think that's a great idea. That way, the most current post is always free for informational posting only, and we all know to move up one level when a new post arrives. If anyone notices that there is a new post, let the group know, and we can all move up one.
So, for now, everyone should move to "A note for Bonnie" and post there, until there is a new post from Denise.
If there are suggestions for the local searchers, shouldn't it be posted on the most recent message, or should they be called? If they are out in the field, they are probably not reading e-mails...
A note of encouragement... My daughter is in whippet rescue and caught a whippet over a month from the time he was lost.. She did not know this old dog (He was 14 years old)to make a long story short. she cryed when she lassoed him as he tryed to dash by her on Thanksgiving day!! He was feral by then, but is now a great couch potato!!! Soon Vivi will be curled up on the couch too. Home in Calif. and all you wonderful people who have stood by it all may breath a siegh of relief, cry happy tears, and toast to Vivi! For She is one tuff girl!!!
People are mentioning Vet care...the North Shore on Northern Blvd in Bayside is very good. The 24 hour emergency on Long Island ? I work 2 days at week at NY Veterinary Specialists on Rt. 110 in Farmingdale 631 694-3400; and in the same building is Animal Emergency Service. Great Dr's and most of the techs are board certified in emergency/critical care. It's not as busy a place as Plainview..Also, I have to find the address of a WONDERFUL vet I knew when I was in Vet tech school at LaGuardia, he is in Queens and does a lot of emergency work, and he doesn't get hung up on beaurocracy..When we find her, it might be better not to overload her with food right away....my guess would be some warm IV fluids would help her and of course that has to be under a Dr's Rx. My choice would be to give her some nice warm chicken broth or soup if it was available !! Her family can authorize treatment very quickly from wherever they are. Emergency places, including AES, aren't going to hassle anyone about whether or not she's already a patient. Most of the animals that come in to us have never been there before. The ASPCA hospital in Manhattan is wonderful even though it's small, they're very used to this sort of thing,
I agree with the Golden Retriever Rescue person, kind of...I generally like to avoid hospitals (even though I'm in human/animal health fields!)but Vivi could very well be dehydrated and/or have infections and a fragile digestive system....somebody posted that they know a vet in Queens who specializes in sighthounds...that's good (I'd like to know his name !) Sighthounds react differently to a lot of meds, including anesthetics, but I thnk most vets know that.
Thanks, Siri and Sharon, for your fun responses to my Academy Awards comment! My candle is lit and Vivi will soon be home... walking that red carpet! Heck, we'll roll one out for her as she gets off the airplane! Give her some practice for the Academy Awards! Marnie in rainy CA
well m.g.....are we the only awake blogheads
nice thoughts on the movie deal....lassie who?.......do you ever feel like your talking to yourself...being that i live like a vampire...i feel like a fork living in a world of soup...when i wake up at 10 am..there will be 40 blogs sreaming"where the hell is brian"....the answer will be..in my 3rd r.e.m.
Brian if you're still there, enjoy your third R.E.M. cause I wish I had a first, lol. How do you manage to live on the lack of sleep? Thanks for all your hard work and energy! This blog head is off to bed with the whippets. I think they're getting mad at me, lol.
OH I am awake. It's 9:30 om Maui. For ONCE I can keep up with you! And by the way I am the one who suggested that Denise will be writing and you wou will be promoting the movie deal and again for just this once can I come to the Vanity Fair party?

edit in case tis posted twice
oops
I don't know where I'm supposed to post anymore so hope this is right. Just wanted to comment on my concerns:
It seems to me that the only way to recover her now is with the humane traps set properly by experienced recovery people. You all know WHERE she is (approximately), but you can't capture her even if you see her. She'll simply run from fright and be out of the area, and we'll be starting from scratch.
Wouldn't this be the time to bring in experienced Whippet rescue personnel now that we have her staying in the same general area?
I'm so afraid for her, I just cry all the time. Trying to keep my positive energy going, but I can't sleep I worry so much.
I'm not posting as much as before because I just am beyond words most of the time. Just know that I'm here and trying hard to do whatever I can.
there are still a few of us up = I watch the blog all night from work. Each day I look in hoping to see that she is found. What a wonderful group of folks helping that happen - hang in there all!
