A Pawprint in the Sand

Vivi searchers report that they have found pawprints on the beach that could belong to the MIA whippet, who escaped from her California-bound crate at JFK Airport precisely one week ago.

"We have two live traps out there now" in the airport's off-limits marshland and wildlife area, "and we will be relocating them" closer to the dog tracks, said Honi Reisman of Baldwin, who has been spearheading the search along with Vivi's co-owner Paul Lepiane.

Vivi's other owner, Jil Walton, who flew back this morning from California to rejoin the search, and Paul spotted the tracks earlier today.

Honi said the searchers plan to put three more food-baited live traps in the area tomorrow.

The dog tracks are fairly fresh, perhaps as little as a day old, and were found in the sand on the airport's western shoreline. Accessible through a dog-size hole in the airport fencing, the beach is fairly close to heated and vacant outbuildings in one of the airport's cargo areas.

Is Vivi hunting the marshes in the early morning for her breakfast, then returning to the cargo area for shelter?

Searchers have been exploring the possibility of using a water service such as Sea Tow to help spot the whippet from the waters of Jamaica Bay. Tentative plans were in place tonight to bob past the beach at daybreak tomorrow.

Thanks to you Denise for keeping all of us concerned dog lovers up to date on VIVI. I check your blog daily for the latest info.
Paw prints near the water seem to be consistent with Beatrice Lydeckers latest communications with ViVi...thats she's in an open area and is wet.I hope she is found soon as it is horribly cold and damp here in NYC.
If there is another search planned , please keep us posted as I would be more than happy to help.

If there is a search group for this poor animal please post it so I can go help since I don't live far from the airport. Also whereever they found droppings maybe they should put out food and come back later to see if any was eaten at leat you would have an idea as to what area she may be in.

Thanks for the updates.
I pray everyday Vivi is found, wake up every day thinking about her, hoping for good news. It is going to be very cold this weekend, I hope this poor girl walks into a baited trap before then.

I echo Audrey, Debbie and Donna! I think Pet Rescue in Larchmont offered good advice and like Kitty Hayley, I can't stop thinking of this and I can't stop crying :( I can barely see my computer screen...

Thank you for the updates Denise. I check every day, praying she is found. The panic and terror of knowing your dog is on the run without help is indescribable. My dog was found...I hope the same thing happens for Vivi.

I'm from Orange County NY and FL. I went and drove/walked part of the northern neighborhoods last afternoon and evening. It is such a vast area with so many homes, sheds and porches. It is hard to believe that she is in the neighborhoods without having been seen by someone. More likely that she is in the marshland or cargo areas. I pray constantly that she is located (may take time though). In the meantime I can't get it out of my head, much like DebbieK. I know tears don't help, but it is so heartbreaking. God Bless Vivi and her family.
