Do trees have to be disfigured to clear power lines?

Carol Nelson of Hewlett read a Watchdog item April 27 about the extensive trimming or removal of trees along the LIRR tracks in Lynbrook and agreed with Ron Sme, who wrote to complain about the way it was done.

Sme said the area had been butchered. Nelson described it as “the amputation and disfiguration.”

Nelson wrote: “Unfortunately, the LIRR is not the only one guilty of extreme and excessive cutting of our trees.

“If you look along our streets and roads you will notice that as trees grow up to power lines the trunks and limbs are severely amputated – disfiguring the trees and in some cases killing the tree. While trimming is necessary, the crews who do so need to be educated to properly trim trees so the integrity and health of our trees are maintained.

“Careful trimming (not extreme disfiguration) will maintain the aesthetics of our trees and will allow our community trees to grown and flourish for years to come.”

I’ve seen this across Long Island. Sometimes it’s shocking to see what the trees look like after a crew has been through an area.

I know that trees have to be trimmed to avoid outages, but there are crews that seem to do a better job of pruning so the trees don’t look like they’ve been hit by a madman with a chainsaw.

The pictures Nelson sent show a tree at Main Street and Ocean Ave. in East Rockaway by Wendy's that looks like an angry amateur attacked it.
