How did you get into making candles and decorative matchboxes?
I created my first matchbox after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. I lit candles every day to wish everyone well. I also wanted a box that would look pretty on my coffee table and that coordinated with my décor. My interest in creating a beautiful yet functional object soon turned into a creative passion.
I gave matchboxes and candles as gifts to friends and family and soon my first batch of matchboxes were in high-end boutiques around Los Angeles. The rest is history.
Where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration comes from everywhere, including fellow crafters, small-business owners, friends and family, books, store displays, and other products. Anything I see can inspire me to create something new or take a new approach to something old.
What's your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge is balancing my love of making matchboxes and candles and running a business. I would say that combining a passion for crafting and being a small-business owner is a daily challenge.
What's your best craft tip?
Just do it! Even if it seems intimidating and others are doing it perfectly, you should give it a try. Your own finesse and style will only make it better.
What craft would you like to try next?
Much to my mothers dismay, I’d like her to teach me how to knit -- again -- or maybe try welding. The list grows bigger everyday. I can’t open a crafting magazine or turn on a cooking or crafting show without wanting to give that craft a try. ![]()
What are your favorite local craft stores?
Living in larger cities for the past few years has spoiled me. On the North Fork of Long Island, there really isn’t anywhere for interesting craft supplies. I’d love to hear of someplace please let me know. My favorite store for inspiration and supplies is The Paper Source. Sadly, they do not have a retail location on Long Island, but papersource.com is fun.
Any advice for beginners?
Never lose the love and passion for what makes you happy.
Why do you love making decorative candles and matchboxes?
I’m really not sure, but I just love making the matchboxes. After six years, the passion and love for covering each box has never dwindled.
