How did you get into floral art?

As my children reached the Bar and Bat Mitzvah years I decided to try my hand at creating the centerpieces and room decor for their parties. The response was so overwhelming that I decided to open Table Art & Event Designs, a decor company for corporate and social gatherings. The event planners at Atlantis Marine World, in Riverhead, where we had my son's reception, saw my work and they were impressed with my unusual creations. They soon placed me on their recommended vendor list. Since then I have created pieces for events held at venues such as Oheka Castle, The New York Hall of Science, and various other venues throughout New York.

What was your first attempt at floral art?

My first attempt at floral sculptures came from a desire to create three dimensional centerpieces for my son's party. Since the event was held at the aquarium, I wanted to create sea centerpieces to go along with the theme. I didn't know how to go about it, but I knew I wanted to use flowers. Finally I decided to sculpt the shapes. I was able to teach myself how to shape the forms, and I just kept redoing it until I got it right. After the shapes were complete, I embellished them with thousands of silk flowers, placed on each piece, one petal at a time.

I start with a vision in my mind of what I want to create. I then do research by looking for images in books, magazines, or online to help me sculpt the forms. I use these images as tools as I am always referring back to the picture. I use my eyes to constantly compare the image to what I strive to create. It is crucial to train one's eye in order to achieve a lifelike form, with proper dimensions and shape.

What's your best craft tip?

My best craft tip is to save scraps, trims and any supply that you can. You never know when you will be able to put those things to good use.

Where do you find inspiration?

My love for flowers has always been a constant inspiration throughout my life. No matter what medium I work in, flowers need to be included in my designs. I also find inspiration from other creative people. I appreciate how artists are able to make a living by pursuing their chosen craft. It is a difficult career choice, but I must keep at it, because it thrills me. I know that it must be a part of my life. It doesn't matter what medium I choose to work in, as long as I'm creating. I have a drive that keeps me going and I try to create things that are unusual. Each new piece is better than the last. I strive for the impossible and somehow it works for me.

What craft would you like to try next?

My daughter and I have recently picked up knitting. It does not come easy for me. We have dreams of creating some wonderful things that we can wear. So far, we have learned how to make scarves. I hope to learn how to make other pretty articles of clothing. How many scarves do you need?

What's your favorite craft stores?

I search for flowers at craft stores like Michaels or in the wholesale market. Vintage clothing and trimming stores are a good sources to find unique embellishments.

What's your biggest challenge?

I have a vision in my mind and I push myself to do the impossible. Sculpting is definitely more challenging than painting with a brush. As an artist who comes with an experience in painting, when I sculpt, I still feel as though I hold a paint brush. I feel as though my flowers serve as the paint needed to create a beautiful piece of art. It is definitely a labor of love and I accept the challenge as a chance to showcase my true dedication. I am a perfectionist, never satisfied unless each piece exceeds my expectations.

Any advice for beginners in floral art design?

My advice for beginners is to never give up. Just keep experimenting until you get it right.

Why do you love what you do?

I love the satisfaction I feel when my work is complete and my goal has been accomplished. There is no better feeling than when a client is pleased with the final result, after creating a piece for their special event. It is worth all of the long hours and hard work that were put into it.
