Remember "Kid Nation?"
It was only the cause celebre of the '07-'08 season, with endless stories written about, and over which countless calls were made by reporters to child welfare services in New Mexico, state investigation panels convened, and critics so exercised by the possible legal and moral ramifications of it all that they lost sleep AND weight (often at the same time.)
It was quite a show.
Anyway, it's dead.
Or almost certainly dead - or like that soap that's 99.999 percent pure - it's 99.999 percent dead.
CBS announced its '08-09 returning shows last night, and "Kid" was not amongst the living. Here's the complete list, and no major surprises: "Cold Case," "Criminal Minds," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "Ghost Whisperer," "NCIS," "Numb3rs," "Two and a Half Men," "Without a Trace," "The Big Bang Theory." Of the reality crew, CBS had already announced that '"Survivor" and "The Amazing Race" were back.
I emailed CBS's laudatory primetime press man, Phil Gonzales, about the unfortunate state of affairs with regards "Kid Nation." He wrote back: "Other than the shows that we just announced as renewed, no final decisions have been made on any shows for next year. We just ordered 4 more post-strike originals for 'Moonlight' and 'Jericho' is in 'Cane’s' time period for now."
Phil is just too polite to say it, so I'll say it for him:
"Kid Nation" is dead.
Without "Kid Nation" to kick around, what will give critics exercise this fall? (They'll have to go out and run around the block, I guess.) At least they'll get some sleep.
And - I'm glad you asked - what about "Cane." Again, I think this announcement pretty much says it all. It too is gone. That's a bummer - especially for Jimmy Smits fans. But here's the silver lining: This means that the splendid Nestor Carbonell - who just happens to be one of my favorite actors in the solar system - will get to return to "Lost" where he can complete his great and never-aging portrayal of Richard.
Yes, "Others" dude Richard Alpert with 99.999 percent certainty WILL be back and that's the best news today.

The sad part about this is that...if CBS had actually let the show be as they had advertised and promoted it...I think it would have gotten better ratings. We all know that "reality show" reality is not REAL reality, of course. But if they had not been so blatantly heavy-handed in scripting the action, and in managing and provoking the "conflicts", it would have been a much better show.
Nothing worse than seeing producers (and a network) come up with a promising, potentially entertaining concept...and then not trusting it.

Truely disappointed about Kid Nation 2, I think it wasn't marketed well. It would have faired better on a not as big network and def at a different time slot. If people gave it a chance I'm sure they would have liked it.
So unless another network picks it up then I guess we all must move on with our lives.
If CBS had put a tenth the energy behind Kid Nation as they did with that turd Big Brother, it would be the biggest thing on TV.
Why don't they just call themselves "the CSI Network" and send everyone else home?

This is dumb, apperently pointless CBS shows like Big Brother and Power of Ten can keep going, but shows with a purpose get shot down. CBS, who've made children cry. You've crushed children's dreams. And for what? To save money?

why would you throw away a show that thousands..maybe even millions loved. It showed what kids had to do to survive..I say that its better than Surviver. Surviver is a show that shows adults and most of the kids sit at home on their butts watching the adults and americans now days wonder why us kids are soo lazy. Well I have news for you its your fault. I think we need Kid Nation it was a way for America to see what people actually had to do for us way back when. It was building a community with respect and unity. Kid Nation was a great show that should have been a role model for other kids out in America. Cancelling another GREAT show..its horrible and not right. CBS..I thought the whole point was to entertain and get ratings, but without Kid Nation to look forward to..whats the point of watching t.v. anymore. Please I beg of you please dont get rid of an amazing show. I would appreciate it if you didnt. I hope to be on the show one day so that I can learn more about how hard it was back then..

They cant cancel it. CBS, if you read this, take the time to make more commercials about it, then it would get better rating. I am sure of it. Also, if you could somehow prvide information to the stupid people who think Kid Nation is against child labor laws, that it isnt against them. If you look at all the messages on this board...they all want kid nation back. so dont cancel it.
Please bring back Kid Nation. It was a great family show that we all enjoyed and looked forward to.

I'm a little older that the average "Kid Nation" viewer (My husband and I LOVED the show!! I wish I had known about the petition.
I had hopes my grandson and grandaughter would be interested in applying - A wonderful opportunity!!
It DOES really suck that it won't be back!

Hi Producers...
I absolutely LOVE KID NATION. I watched every episode and the kids had endured many difficult challenges but they were AWESOME!!!
PLEASE bring back this show. This is a great program for kids who will learn from the ones who survived many difficult trials in life without having adults around.
