"July 4: Exploding the Myths" (Friday at 10 p.m. on NatGeo) examines what we think we know about Independence Day and how it's celebrated. That includes fireworks, yes, but also flags, cookouts and the Declaration of Independence that started it all.
Among the revelations: Americans spend $1.9 billion yearly on Fourth of July cookouts like those we'll be having next Wednesday. John Hancock purposely signed his name huge on the Declaration to mock the British who'd put a bounty on rebel leaders. And fireworks have recently been updated with microchips.
