BOYCOTTING PARIS, OR "WHY MIKA BRZEZINSKI IS MY HERO."

I can't be entirely clear whether this will start a trend, but a guy can dream (can't he?) MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski boycotted all references to Paris Hilton on this morning's edition of "Morning Joe."

Does Mika deserve a raise?

I think so.

No. I know so.

TVnewser, one of the few places that actually monitors "Morning Joe" at 6 a.m. offers this account of Mika's "I'm Mad-as-Hell-Not-Gonna-Take-Paris-Anymore" revolt:

"'Give her the Paris Hilton story,'" Joe Scarborough joked during the 6am news update. 'No, I will not read that,' she said [Mika's the show’s news anchor], before tearing the script into several pieces.

"'It's an awful story. We shouldn't cover it,' Mika said a couple minutes later.

"In the 7am hour, Mika pretended to light the Paris script on fire. 'This is a bad call to even be covering it,' she said...

"When her producer set Paris as the lead story again at 8am, Mika walked over to a paper shredder and destroyed the script..."

You go, girl. You really really go.

Are you serious, she is as much a part of the sensationism as the story she purports to disdain. Everything on this show is planned right down to the pretend fire burn of the story. In fact by bringing so much attention to her insipidly contrived act, the Hilton story received much greater attention than if she had just read it in her normal deadpan fashion.

it wasn't a "boycott" of paris. joe was criticizing her for asking a rhetorical question about the iraq study group, which as a newsanchor, she isn't supposed to do, because asking a rhetorical question implies an opinion, which as we all know journalists muzzle their opinions deep inside so no one can see..........

newsbusters has it.....she ripped up the copy during the middle of this argument cause she wanted the last word.

she's done the paris story many, many times in the past.

Mika, you go girl!!! i too can not understand why the war in iraq and the thousand of dead service people and wounded returning soldiers are not the lead story. what about the vp not complying with disclosure law. blocking his office when the dept responsible attempted to access his office. now he is trying to change the law. is he above the law? and why does he not want the govt. to access his records of how he is handling his secure info and visitors? or who helped him with the energy bill?

How utterly refreshing to see that there is a newscaster out there who has enough strength of conviction to say what most thinking people think...why is this pathetic person who's primary claim to fame is spending money earned by generations before her worthy of all this attention? As the mother of two young ladies, I am saddened at the press that she garners, particularly in media geared toward the younger generations. With so many women in this world so better suited to stand as role models, why is it all about Paris. My daughters consider her silly which is a credit to the depths of their characters. Kudos to Mika for refusing to jump on the bandwagon which is content to focus on the shallow and self-absorbed!

I saw the report she actually tried to set the thing on fire but the lighter didnt work and the guy next to her took the report away when the lighter started to work. I dont usually watch these talk show type news casts but she peaked my interest. Maybe she does deserve a raise. It was way more interesting than watching another "look at Paris, see Paris, Oh Paris" report (if you can call those things reports).
She is right Paris is not news and certainly not leading news! The only reason people watched the Paris drama was to see the mean spoiled girl get her dues (or at least cry). Its over (she is over) Nobody really wants to see anymore Paris Hilton - no really no more.

Mika: thank you, thank you, thank you!

I posted the link on my blog this morning after I watched it. I didn't say anything about it except for the headline, "Although it's her job, she's my new hero." Here is the link myspace.com/womyninterrupted That was before I found this blog.

I think the point is that the 'story' did not deserve to be the 'lead story'. There are too many other important things happening in the world to lead with this tripe. I know there are many 'fans' of Paris Hilton and they are really interested in her, but I don't think they watch MSNBC.

I laughed so hard when I saw this video!! Way to go! I am so sick of hearing about Paris!! Our men and women are dying for this Country and they are going to put Paris before them!! She did exactly what alot of us Americans would like to do ourselves!! She truly deserves a RAISE!!! Wow I think everyone should see the video it is about time someone takes a stand and does what is right!! I mean enough is enough

What's the big deal ? I see women act like that all the time. :-|

Thank you! Thank you! I am so darn sick of hearing about all the actors and actresses, and the rich little girls & boys! Paris Hilton is a little girl that needs to get a swift kick in her righteous, rich ass. If more and more of our newscasters and magazines would STOP the hype on these people, perhaps more newsworthy stories would make the news. The lifestyles of some of the singers, Hollywood "stars - huh?" are so ridiculous that I'm surprised it makes the news. Maybe if the news reporters started doing what Mika did, we would all enjoy less news about sex, drugs, and rehab, and start listening to the news instead of turning it off!

Mika, yeah!! I saw the clip and it was one of the most refreshing bits of TV I've seen in a long time. Sure, it was awkward and painful, but just that someone said it, that the Paris story shouldn't lead, that there's more important news... beautiful.

She just became a hero of mine too.

I agree with Mika Brzeziuski; and very upset that the producer of that segment kept insisting she report on Loser Hilton.

I was impressed how she kept her cool because I know I wasn't.

If all journalist could be like her. Great JOB!

I am tired of hearing all the Paris Hilton coverage as well. No one talks about why she was in jail...Instead they make it seem like a momentous occasion that she has been released. I especially don't want to hear about Paris as the top story of the day. I was happy to see that Ms. Brzezinski refused to do the story.

I just wish we had a newsreader that would do that here in Australia - yes, Paris was the lead news item on one of our news shows here last night, which I found absolutely astounding.

If you guys over in the states are sick of her, imagine how we feel Down Under to have her plastered all over OUR news!!!

Whether it is a setup or not, I don't care. At least someone started to stop talking about Paris Hilton.

i almost cried watching that, i don't care if its scripted or not, either she or the station itself made a stand

Mika:-

You are a breath of fresh air. Who cares about plaster of Paris!

All my support to Mika, who stood up with integrity, even as our news media seems determined to feed us a steady diet of garbage!

Mika Brzezinski is my hero! She not only showed great judgment but excellent moral values by refusing to pander to her producer, Andy Jones', baseness in leading the news with a story about Paris Hilton, a total waste of oxygen and pampered pornographic brat who has done absolutely zero to justify her false status as a celebrity. The vast majority of sensate Americans are utterly nauseated by this brainless NOTHING! Her fifteen minutes of fame would have been over long ago were it not for the money-mongering media wasting the publics' time. I refused to dignify Larry King's show by watching his interview with the NOTHING! The spectacle of paparazzi chasing the Hilton's car through the streets and while stopped at traffic lights was also beyond reasonable news-worthiness. If these leaches and notoriety pimps weren't being paid obscene amounts to get the photos and footage for YOU, the MEDIA, they, too, would soon disappear from our lives. One can only hope and pray. Meanwhile, consider firing Jones, who just perpetuates the myths and give Mika Brzezinski a HUGE RAISE for her gumption and intelligence.

Nothing about "Morning Joe" nor any show like it resembles journalism. They are entertainment programs and the anchors are entertainers, not journalists. I applaud Mika and anyone who stands up and says, "ENOUGH! NO MORE NOTHING ABOUT NOTHING!" and that nothing is Paris Hilton. If you have a need to hear about Paris Hilton today, then something is seriously wrong with you. Seek professional help, get a hobby, go fishing, sell all of your Trekki toys and perhaps even... START DATING!

I am in Australia and even we now have the story of Mika! Way to go - pay her what she likes. I am so sick of the airhead Paris being frontline news. Who cares? And she is so right - if the US is down sizing in Iraq that is more important to everyone or damn well should be...

Wow -- to see Mika take a stand when there are so many important stories to report gave my heart hope -- go Mika -- thanks for having the courage to stop 'feeding the ugly beast of ignorance'.

Whether it was for publicity or not the fact that an american news caster has realized that Celebrities are not the news. I literally gave up on American News, I watch and read the BBC, London Times and other foreign news papers because the american media chooses not to show news but rather famous people doing stupid nonsense, its stupid and shouldnt be on the television. All this does is actually puts the point out there that some americans would like their news to be celebrity free. The day Hilton was arrestted CNN interruptted coverage on Iraq to go live to her being cuffed. The BBC didnt even put it on the front page, it was off to the side on other stories from the Americas they instead focused on the news that actually mattered.. Maybe now american media will see the light and show us whats happening in the world, like it or not were part of the global community and we need to start knowing whats happening around us.

Perhaps this will start a return to integrity in journalism? This woman put her job on the line for her principles. She is my hero, too.

She rules. Joe Scarborough is clearly a misogynistic pig who abuses women on the air. Just like the other male on the screen.

Mika Brzezinski.
Una giornalista con le palle.
Si rifiuta di leggere cazzate e non apre il Tg con Paris Hilton!
http://blog.libero.it/KOLBEN/2919375.html"

I watched the whole show and taped a good 2 hr section of it after laughing pretty hard and enjoying Scarborough and Willie Geist also laughing at CNN's 3 hr special on Hilton, in which they showed poor Wolf Blitzer having to terminate an interview with Cosby about violence in today's cities to go to what Blitzer said with no small consternation was "another story" ... CNN then cut to Hilton ARRIVING and getting out of a CAR to be interviewed by Larry King. It was the low point of CNN over all these years, and Scarborough's crew was laughing a lot about this.

They also showed Anderson Cooper having to give a FULL HOUR of Hilton coverage and saying things like "I just don't get it..." (her appeal) while having to devote an HOUR to it on CNN on what is normally a real news show.

They couldn't believe that this was done to Cooper.

So the whole Scarborough thing, while strongly felt by Mika B. was obviously enjoyed by the whole crew.

Scarborough had to ask her to read it but he spent the whole time ridiculing CNN and any other news shows that spent time on the actual Hilton story from the standpoint of "news" ...

I really like this show.
Mika was not so much acting as being given the opportunity to do this while they pretended she really should read the 'lead story'...

Mika Brzezinski: thanks God she's exist.
I'm italian and i live in Italy, and it's unbelieveble that also the six italian tv have shown as "top story" everyday since 25 days ago the jail trial of Paris Hilton. Bombs in Iraq, hundred of casualties in Lebanon, etc, etc : always commented after the Hilton "tragedy". Who really care? And how, meanwhile we all try (not easily) to explain to our children values as friendship, loyalty, honour, honesty, correctness, we can stop these false and dangerous news?

Thank god someone refused to cover the story. Respect
