Zayra Alvarez won the battle against Ryan Star, but lost the war.
On Tuesday's episode of "Rock Star: Supernova," Star and Alvarez locked horns after learning that one contestant would get a chance to perform an original song. Alvarez spoke up to claim that spot first, followed by Star -- but the quirky singer from Texas got her way.
"There was a little tiny piece of doubt I saw in him," Alvarez explained. Her song, "Lluvia de Mar," was a slow, moody number that benefited from the string section that joined the house band Tuesday.
As for Star, he commanded the stage with a brooding, stormy version of Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight," which Dave Navarro called "the best performance of the night."
After Dilana's updated rendition of the Harry Chapin chestnut "Cat's in the Cradle," however, Navarro changed his tune. "I spoke too soon," he said.
Still, Star's performance was strong enough to convince the Supernova crew to give him his second encore of the season. It also kept him well out of the bottom tier this week.
Among the surprises on Wednesday: The Supernova crew performed their new song "Leave The Lights On" (featuring Dilana on vocals) and Magni fell into the bottom three for the first time.
But it was Zayra who got the axe. "No one would believe that I would have been here for so long," she said, tearing up. While saying goodbye to her fellow rockers, she and Star embraced.
