'Gossip Girl' vs. '90210'
In the rich kids TV drama smack down, I expected the new '90210,' which premiered last night on the CW, to give second-season 'Gossip Girl' a run for its money. It didn't come close. Here's why:

New York City. The NYC of 'Gossip Girl' provides an interesting backdrop. They go to a posh school on the Upper East Side, Serena lives in The Palace, they summer in the Hamptons, they eat at Nick & Toni's and Butter, they go to downtown clubs, Dan and Jenny Humphrey live in Brooklyn... most of the places in the show actually exist. And if they don't exist, the places in the show are an over-the-top version of places that do. In '90210' they're still chilling at the Peach Pit (hey Nat -- thank you anonymous poster for correction). And that's about it.
There's a difference between fabulous and ridiculous. Yea right that girl from Kansas (Annie) would have boarded a private jet to San Francisco for a date with the artsy Italian guy she hasn't spoken more than a few words to. Brenda Walsh would never have done that! Blair, on the other hand, getting in a helicopter to summer with Chuck Bass... that was totally in character. Ok, so she's ridiculous too... just a more fabulous ridiculous.
The female characters. Blair, Serena, Jenny Humphrey... they all have their separate personas and are dressed in colorful, fashionable, looks that fit with their character. See examples of Blair in the covet-worthy outfits from the first episode.

In '90210,' well, the female characters are lacking. Both Annie (Brenda Walsh stand-in) and Silver (Kelly's sister) are not just skinny, they look emaciated. They're so thin that I couldn't focus on anything else when they were on screen (see pic of Silver and check out the bony thigh). Then you have the "hot girl," Naomi, who looks about 45. She's Andrea Zuckerman old, but Andrea Zuckerman didn't play the sexy chick. And finally, there's the pill popping drama girl trying to get into movies because her mom can't pay the bills. So over the top in her drug use -- she's stealing purses to pay for her habit, belting out songs in class with red-rimmed eyes -- it's just not right.

While I could go on, there are two characters and one plotline on '90210' that still have me intrigued. What's up with Michael from 'The Wire' showing up as the black Brandon Walsh, Dixon? Seems totally miscast, or maybe that's just because last time I saw him on TV he was with Snoop (watch 'The Wire' immediately if you haven't already). Second intriguing character is the drunken mom from 'Arrested Development' as the drunken mom (grandma) on '90210.' Playing pretty much the same character, but that might not be a bad thing. And the plotline? Brenda Walsh back as bffs with Kelly Taylor, of course.
So, 'Gossip Girl' rules, in my mind at least, but feel free to disagree. That said, I'll still continue watching them both. Even though it's bad, '90210' is still that good kind of bad... for now.

fyi - it's NAT not NED
great article! couldn't have said it better myself!
I am basically a Long Islander, but now I live in Wisconsin. Since one of my Comrades, a felion( a Cat) is named Kojact, I decided to investicate some the the behavoir, in terms on events that have taken place on Long Island....and although I might be wrong on some of the events, some of the events might be the fault of a comment made by a few people on a wealthy part of Long Island...It was reported by the press that some folks said something like someone tasts as good as chicken. The response to that comment was that such a statement is offensive to most Americans, ect. As far as the above...like, like, like...like...like...more....like...more...like....more. I should add that I am pissed at the V.A. for keeping me so high on a cocane like substance against my will..and...Like...Like...Like...I should add I'm not breaking the law now...I'm on Zyprexa and Old English Beer..
Like...Like...Like...
you're an idiot, and clearly know nothing about acting. the actors on 90210, in only one episode, out-acted ALL of the gossip-girl actors (with the exception of Blair). the main girl in 90210 actually seems ALIVE! you can understand what she's SAYING. she ENUNCIATES, and actually has fun, organic moments! all of the actors on 90210 were committed, intelligent, coherent...nothing like the cookie-cutter puppets on gossip girl. i don't think you really care about comparing these two shows. i think you went into this as a die-hard gossip girl fan, and knew that there was no way you'd enjoy 90210.
GOSSIP GIRL IS WAY BETTER THAN 90210
I completely agree with Rory. But in some ways I don't. But one thing is for sure, you are a complete idiot. Your whole article, and those who say that they themselves couldn't have even summed it up better, just shows how juvenille and bad you are at giving shows a chance. The reason why you 'disliked' 90210 so much was because you had your mind set on Gossip Girl, and in your head nothing would be better, so even if something as good as 90210, your mind would immediately dismiss it because you are a Gossip Girl-fan-till-death-do-you-part. Next time actually take the time to think, and before you put some stupid article on the website, which makes no sense, which also defames the show, just think. And for all you readers who are taking this idiot's advice, and haven't seen the show, don't listen. Watch, have your opinion, and jar this guy.
FYI Naomi isn't the new Andrea Zuckerman... her daughter Hannah Zuckerman Vasquez, the news anchor at the school, is obviously in that role.
I loved 90210. It isn't the old 90210 but then did anyone think we could go back?
This article was written as one-sided and could easily be torn apart if I had the time. Just because scenes take place in actual locations does not make it better. I watch these shows to escape reality not compare them to reality. Just because the Peach Pit is not a real place, it was a main character in the original 90210 and we, the fans are happy to have it back.
The "Andrea Zuckerman old" thing was meant that she was 29 when the series started and was old for the part...This girl does not look 16 either..
Wow, you guys are fired up. As I wrote at the end of my post, I'm still watching '90210' -- actually have all the episodes set to DVR -- I just prefer 'Gossip Girl.' It's that simple.
Here's a few plot points I'm particularly interested in, as summarized by my brother, a hard core '90210' fan:
"The fact that Kelly's baby daddy was not revealed leaves the door open to all sorts of possibilities. Could it be Brandon, or Dylan, or maybe even a reformed Colin? I can definitely see him bailing on a kid. Is Brenda going to go after the hipster English teacher and try to steal him from Kelly? Sure they are friends now, but it is just a matter of time before they are making cookies with a K and B on them and forcing him to choose. If Hannah is at the school, then what is Andrea up to? How are they going to make her look 35 or so when in real life she is about 50. What is the deal with the new Jim Walsh and his adopted son? Can Aunt Becky fill the big shoes that Cindy Walsh left behind?"
We'll have to wait and see.
I agree with the premise that 90210 does not stack up to Gossip Girl just yet, but not necessarily the reasoning. My main concern is the lack of evil characters on 90210. Naomi is supposed to be the main foil for the other lead girls? Maybe it is just the first episode but she seems pretty weak to me. Blair Waldorf or Summer (season 1 before she became good) would chew her up and spit her out. That isn't even bringing Val into the conversation, who represents the pinnacle of the catty vixen character.
As for the guys, where is the Chuck Bass type character. That George lame looks to be playing the roll, but he couldn't even compare to Luke (season 1 again, when the OC was actually good). He pushed Dixon in the back and made out with Ethan's girlfriend? Welcome to the OC bitch that most certainly is not.
Time will tell, but right now the adult characters are much more intriguing to me. I just hope Buster shows up to keep Gange company.
You nailed it!! I was an avid 90210 fan back in the day. Was excited but skeptical about the new cast and story line. It was over the top, stereotypical, non believable and hokey and sorry...boring. I did not care about the characters and like you, found the whole "hi, wanna fly in my jet" situation stupid and totally unrealistic!! On the other hand, Gossip Girl is interesting. The characters are well defined. The backdrop is awesome and I can't get enough of Blair and Chuck Bass..Sorry Rory, you're wrong!
Yeah, ok obviously you guys do not read posts. Shannon, you're stupid. Great now that's out of the way, seeing as no one actually cares or even reads the other posts and comes to a rational decision, there is just no reasoning with you guys. Rory, was right when he said that you guys were all fixated on Gossip Girl, and didn't even think to give 90210 a chance. So for all you gay losers out there, don't quit your day job.
hey i haven't watched both series gossip girl doesn't come here in australia but 90210 is about to come
Hey I'm from Australia and i have watched both series. Gossip girl is great. Also I reckon 90210 is great as well. It's good to find out what the old characters are up to like Brenda and Kelly, but it would be good to even know what Dylan is up to. I like the fact that they have brought the peach pit back, and it's good to see Nat actually using the coffee machine's that exist after the 1990's.
i am a huge gossip girl fan and without a doubt, gossip girl is an amazing show....what i dnt seem to get is y we have to compare the two so closely. they both tell the story of rich and priveldged teenagers. why must there me someone exactly like blair on 90210, why must we have a duplicate chuck bass character on 90210. they are two different shows.
this is the first show for these actors. give them time and they will get better. dnt shoot them down after one episode, that is being way too critical and definitely not open minded.
gossip girl was lucky, it hit success very quickly. but most shows do not start of with instant success. look at one tree hill, some of the actors in that show were horrendous thier first season. i though hilarie burton couldnt act. now i think she is a really good actress. it takes time.
the biggest problem is that everyone waited for this show to compare it to others. when gossip girl came out, there was nothing to compare it too. one tree hill was passed the high school phase. most critics and ppl in general did not tune into 90210 with an open mind, all they did was wait to compare it too gossip girl and the original bev hills 90210.
just give the show a chance, and who knows it might surprise you!
You wish - calling people stupid won't get you anywhere in life.
Rory - calm down it's a tv show. If you want to watch it fine, if someone else doesn't that is their business.
In all honestly I felt like it was Saved by the Bell 2.0. I'm an original 90210 fan hardcore. I also enjoy Gossip Girl, and when I watched the new 90210 (GG wasn't in my mind at all), I thought it quite frankly sucked. Then again many people weren't into the old 90210 when it first came on, so they'll have to prove themselves.
Anne- I liked your review if other's didn't they can click the little x in the corner.
Gossip Girl characters wear upscale designers and trendsetting fashion and style choices. People seriously *covet* the headbands, handbags, shoes that the girls on GG wear. It's almost like Sex and the City for teen girls.
The characters on 90210 looked like their wardrobes came from the local Rave or Charlotte Russe. I can't imagine anyone coveting the "outfit" that Silver (best character on the show BTW) is wearing in the photo on this page, or that outfit being some kind of trendsetting fashion.
Hey guys. Sorry about my last comment. I realize now that I'm a faggot. I should have never disagreed with You Wish or Rory for that matter. They are completely right, and through their eyes I now see how much of a retarded bitch I was being.
Thanks much love, Susan.
Gossip Girl is just simply better. 90210 and Gossip Girl may be similar in the fact that they are both shows about high school and stuff, but Gossip Girl rocks because it has way more drama and its more twisted than many shows. Things do happen fast on the show, but then all the twists make it so interesting to watch. Also the twists in GG make it so that you never can guess what will really happen. 90210 is a story about a teenager who moved from Kansas and if goin to a new school. I never watched the older versions but I just don't think that 90210 has enough drama. It's so close to like real life that it makes it seem lame. I think that 90210 is a good show for those people who watched the older versions and saw the changes, but I don't think teenagers care about what the oldies are doing and what the teenagers in the show are doing is just not enough. Although I watch both shows and like them, I still think Gossip Girl is way better.
That's so cute you pretended to be me.
What a toolbag you are.
Sorry guys! I didn't take my medication so I had no recollection of those events therefore I thought someone was being me, wow, this is worse than when I thought P-Diddy was an alien. Well anyways guys, I am fully medicated, and my doctor is letting me back onto the streets again! Yes! I promise to limit my drinking!
Thanks guys, Susan.
Honestly, you need to stop.
I think these critics need to stop being immature and bitter because they didn't get a special screening, so they fail to be objective in their reviews. They had to wait in anticipation just like everyone else.
I've been a hardcore fan of the original 90210, I grew up with it, and I was thoroughly impressed with this new spin off, it more than surpassed my expectations I fell in love with it within the first 5 minutes. And you all need to read that article from the Seattle Times that says everything you hear about Beverly Hills is true, so yeah the jet setting thing, that does happen out there.
I am a fan of Gossip Girl too, but I think it's stupid to compare the two shows. Gossip Girl has a lot of so called raunch in it and is basically the TV version of Cruel Intentions. 90210 on the other hand was cutting edge yet was still an old fashioned family drama at heart, at least at the beginning of the series. So yeah, 90210 was more about substance.
I agree with the person who said certain people are so fixated on Gossip Girl that they aren't even giving 90210 a fair chance, let's remember that Gossip Girl didn't exactly get off to a great start. It took a while for that show to grow on me. And a lot of Gossip Girl fans are probably too young to remember the original 90210.
Critics can hate all they want, it's just one person's opinion, a number of the critics aren't even the target audience, and some of them clearly never watched the original series. The ratings speak for themselves. All that matters is what the fans think, for every 1 person that didn't like it, there are like 20 people who love it.
Gossip Girl is good, but it's not THAT good, I don't see Gossip Girl lasting more than 4 years, they just don't have any storylines with longevity, all the main characters have pretty much hooked up with each other already.
Critics were a little wishy washy with the original 90210 at the start too, but they proved the haters wrong when it became a huge pop culture phenomenon that last 10 seasons, gained a whole new generation of fans through syndicated reruns and now has it's own spin off. Gossip Girl will never have any of that. Gossip Girl is essentially the New York version of The OC, literally, since it's from the same creator.
But to this reviewer's credit, at least she was adult enough to say that it's just her opinion, feel free to disagree, and not be the cliche pretentious reviewer who thinks their opinion is "fact."
This veteran 90210 fan says that Gossip Girl can't even hold a candle to 90210, both old and new. And this is coming from a native New Yorker. For me, as they said "it's great to be back in Beverly Hills." As someone who has grown up in New York City their whole life, I can tell you that New York is seriously overrated. On Gossip Girl, the fact that the Humphrey's live in Williamsburg is supposed to make them regular "non-rich" people, well I can tell you being from Brooklyn, that Williamsburg is probably the most expensive place in Brooklyn to live because it's become such a hipster community, I'd dare Gossip Girl to show some real parts of Brooklyn like Bed Stuy, East New York, or Coney Island.
Sorry guys. It was the meds again. Don't worry, my doctor has now prohibited me from coming back into society. I know you guys are disappointed, but hey, apparently its "for the welbeing of myself and others". Thats a direct quote from my doctor. I mean all of these plus my parol officer hounding on me to be back at 8:30 every night, just gets at me. I mean here, at the library is the only place where I'm allowed. But yeah, the person who wrote this article was completely wrong, and You Wish, I'm sorry, you should call people stupid. Rory, I'm sorry, your opinion is crucial.
No allowed drinking, but I can probably sneek some in past my parol officer.
Thanks much love, Susan. xx
I'm this close to reporting you.
Honestly grow up.
I think my doctor would know how to spell by the way. Actually, reading your paragraph you should stay at the library and work on your grammar. If you're lucky you can find a book about home training ( because you don't have any).
I completely agree with this review. 90210 is not holding up so far. It may just need a few episodes to really heat up, but other shows that follow a similar formula (OC, Gossip Girl, etc) have done a much better job of hooking you in from the start.
I have to say, this is one colorful comments section. I'm particularly entertained by the people who call the reviewer an idiot, and then proceed to misspell every other word. Keep it up Anne!
Shut up CBud. You are a complete idiot, just like the person who wrote this review. And contrary to your post "I'm particularly entertained by the people who call the reviewer an idiot, and then proceed to misspell every other word", that is the stupidest thing I have read so far. How is it possible to judge a show by the first two episodes? Seriously give it a chance you losers.
I just want to say that I've reported you. The funny thing is if you thought what you had to say was so great, maybe you'd take your head from your ass and use your own name.
CBud - my stalker told you to Shut up. Apparently, they are only twelve years old and thats all they have to do all day.
Anne I love your column. Keep up the good work!
How do you deal with these rude and nasty comments all day?
I just wanna say that i was a huge fan of the first season of GG , but I hated the whole hampton thing I hope it would get better when the semmer ends . And I think that the first 3 episodes of 90210 are much better than the season 2 of gossip girl
I just wanna say that i was a huge fan of the first season of GG , but I hated the whole hampton thing I hope it would get better when the semmer ends . And I think that the first 3 episodes of 90210 are much better than the season 2 of gossip girl
Please Susan. I predict you're too ugly to have a stalker.
You Wish- I'm sure you look like a piece of turd with lipstick on.
Yeah sure, whatever you say. I'm sure you're that ugly turd with the lipstick on and just too ashamed to admit it. It's okay if no guy will go for you, just keep your personal life out of this. No one cares.
Awe you started using your own name finally. Way to man up Chewbacca!! Actually chances are thats too much of a compliment for you.
Well sorry to say that no I am not your stalker. That person is still nevertheless, a genius. Not only did he/she depict your personaility beautifully but he/she also did it with poise. See your "stalker", even though I think you're too stupid and selfish to have one, kept calm throughout "pissing" you off. You on the other hand, got violent and aggravated. And nice line with the whole "Way to man up Chewbacca", not only is that untrue, but that's just plain lame. Next time come up with your own lines.
It was my own line. Thanks.
Actually they got it wrong. I didn't attack anyone until they started in with me. On the other hand calling people stupid just because they disagree with me is not something I would do.
You are so right "faggot" and "retarded bitch" are words of poise.
See, I said nothing wrong there and you went off like the crazy "bitch" you are. It is so easy to get you aggravated, so easy that it's like taking a lollipop from a child and watching them go crazy. Maybe if you hadn't started with writing everyone off then you wouldn't have your stupid stalker. And, FYI, you got it wrong. That stupid Chewbacca line is so lame, let alone gay.
But nice try with the whole "faggot" and "retarded bitch", but make sure not to describe yourself in the process.
Um okay we'll I didn't want to say those things so you are confused. I'm over it.
both shows are bad. gg mean and 90210 boring. The original 90210 had a charm to it
I tried to watch 90210, I'm not gonna lie, it was unbearable. The actors can't act, the plot line sucked, the wardrobe sucked, even the cinematography was straight up ugly. Well, cue the "you're an idiot like the reviewer" comments. I guess I can't have my personal preference.
That being said, the actors in GG (mainly Blake and Chace) aren't amazing actors, but they are much much better than the actors of 90210. If 90210 wasn't called 90210 or part of the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise, I highly doubt it would've survived a season.
Yeah I am just going to come out and say it. You are truely an idiot. No one says you can't have a personal preference, you can, but just make sure that it will be rebutted. Just because you have a preference doesn't mean that no one can attack it because it's sacred. My personal comment is that your comment flat out sucked. That's my personal preference. And what the hell would you know about cinematography? Or acting? Or anything for that matter?
OK!I watch bout shows.Honestly I think new 90210 is so disipointing.I like GG I think is fan show to watch, unlike 90210.acting wise they suck.First that girl from degrease ,she can't act. That head moving thing is annoying, sometimes is scary, she cant cry at all.I actually thought that she is gonna be good because she was on Degrassi she have experience acting wise, but I was wrong.Jessica Stroup i think she is one of better actresses on show of young actresses, she can't cry , but i can say she is OK.AnnaLynne McCord she is sexy and beautiful,so is fan to watch her ,is she good actress No! That black guy I don't know he's name,is he good actor No! I don't pay much attention to him anyway.I'm not resist,so please don't jump on my comment ,just because I don't know he's name. That another guy Naomi's boyfriend or should i say ex,he is OK.I guess.Adriana is best acting wise, that red aye's,they could do that better,so is not her fault, blame on make up artist. And the fact that they put Dylan as Kelly's baby father,so disappointing. That much for 90210.So now left GG.Acting wise is so much better.Blake Lively is not grate actress, but she is pretty good.Blair she is so gorgeous, and acting wise she is grate.Chuck he is also grate.Nate he is OK!He has' not have much experience acting wise.Taylor she is OK for her age.Rufis and Lily thay good.So that much for GG this time.If I mist some one, forgave me.And for Susan you're pathetic.Get a life.no one cares for your personal life.If you have problem go get a help!therapy.
I didn't intend on watching Gossip Girl or 90210 (or the OC which is another matter) these shows are junk food tv, I know I shouldn't like these shows that are purely about rich, skinny, white women but I can't help myself.
I watched GG half way through s1 when I heard Dawn from Buffy was going to be making an appearance. But then I completely fell in love with Blair (after only one episode) and had to continue watching.
As for 90210, I watched the 1st episode just because I was trying to avoid doing uni work and I watched the 2nd episode because it was on straight after the 1st. It was easy to watch but none of the characters really appealed to me that much. I didn't like that the main character seemed to be considering going out with pentapuss boy despite the fact she'd witnessed him cheating on his gf (who she'd actually made friends with).
I really didn't mind 90210 when I watched it and the camparison to Gossip Girl really didn't click until I watched an episode of GG a few days later. I found myself smiling pretty much constantly when Blair was on screen (her catching her bfs step mother gettin on her ex was just priceless). It made me realise I don't need to waste my time with 90210 because GG is just so much more appealing to me. I really have to agree with this article, GG is just more glamorous, the clothes are much better. I think it is true that the reason for this could be that New York is just more fashionable.
My main reason for liking GG better is the characters. Maybe I haven't given 90210 enough of a chance for the characters to get more established though and maybe if I had watched the old 90210 I would like the new one better. But Gossip Girl did draw me in from the very first episode I watched. Mostly because I liked Blair so much, but also because I love gossip so a show dedicated to it is obviously going to be good. Another thing about GG I like is the chemistry between Blair and Serena (not Serena and Dan - yukk) they are such adorable frenemies, their relationship reminds me very much of Buffy/Faith; Serena and Blair even have the lesbian subtext to match. So I will continue to watch GG for the drama, the amazing clothes, the lesbian subtext and of course for Blair.
Why has everyone gotta be horrible about one show if you don't like it then don't watch it.
Stick to GG, I think both shows are great
xoxo
YouWish and Rory: You two need to grow up and learn how to debate with maturity. How would you like it if someone called you an idiot and loser for having an opinion.
YOU GUYS...
they are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT shows... you cannot compare them.
They both are AMAZING in their own ways so chillaxx man looool
Enjoyyyy lifffe :))))
fear I may get jumped on for this comment but you guys need to grow up and get a life and accept that everyone has different opinions about the shows.
I like 90210 better mostly because I can relate to the characters more than the GG characters(coughmarysuescough). Everyone is so perfect that it comes to a point where it's almost unbearable.
If we're talking about what's more realistic, definitely 90210. The way that the people on Gossip Girl act...um, I'm pretty sure nobody really acts like that. Not even the real Upper East side rich kids or whatever.
The kids on 90210 act more like real people. Seriously? Chuck Bass?? No 16 year old acts like him. OKay but TV is not supposed to be reliable.
So if we're talking about which one is better? I did enjoy Gossip Girl first season. But after that, it's just ridiculous. I hate how so many shows just drag the story out until it's cancelled. And they don't even know what to put in the plot, so
they just recycle love interests within each other. Blair with Nate, then Blair with Chuck, then Nate and that Brooklyn girl. Then Nate and Serena again. I don't even know.....the point is that it's ridiculous. Stop recycling!
90210 is only on the first season, so they haven't done that yet. And I really hope they don't. I really like 90210 actually. The characters are interesting because they are more like real people. And all the guys on Gossip Girl are not that cute. Especially Dan is gross.
I've seen every episode of gossip girl except one very important one (which I'm not going to mention in case someone hasn't seen it) and even though they are so bitchy that it is unbelievable it is still very entertaining and their cons cancel out their pros (being unbelievably rich and so) gossip girl is about the only teen drama I liked (the oc was okay until the 3rd season and the hills WTF were they thinking, getting a bunch of talentless losers to star in some teen drama wannabe reality t.v show) 90210 was on air in Australia for about 4 episodes then it was cut, because people didn't like and I agree with them too.
Gossip girl rules!!
to you wish, your weird. Gossip girl is so much better and although it isn't that realistics when has t.v ever meant to be realistic. I couldn't have said it better myself (haha) and for those who say I havn't given 90210 a chance, I have and it sucked ass. And if you say it's becasue I'm biased and I watched GG before 90210, that's not true, cause I watched 90210 before I watched GG and it sucked. It got cut off t.v after 2 eps cause it was that horrible.
